Need to get out of the city?  Kloster Eberbach Winery is an absolutely wonderful day out…with or without kids!

The drive itself is just spectacular with ‘castles’ & backdrops that you once imagined jumping out of the pages of the fairy tales you read as a child! Vineyards, apple blossoms and hills that appear to be a patchwork of squares stitched together!

About Kloster Eberbach

Kloster Eberbach is steeped in history with a long list of previous tenants and uses for the property.  Namely, it has served as a hospital, jail, sheep pen and accommodation for WWII refugees.

Things to do at Kloster Eberbach

Restaurant Klosterschänke

Once at the Klosterbach Monastery, wander the gorgeous grounds before stopping off for a bite to eat at Klosterschänke.  The restaurant has a very rustic and warm atmosphere.  And not only does the restaurant serve German cuisine but the staff greet and serve you in traditional German attire.  Also, the wonderful ‘home cooking’ on the menu is followed up with lighting quick service.

Vinotech

At the Vinothek you can taste and buy the superb wines produced by the government-owned Hessische Staatsweingüter (Hessian State Winery).

So, after lunch head over to the Vinotech for a sneaky wine tasting.  Worth noting, there are guided tours. However, we had kids in tow so did it at lightning speed, not ideal, but we weren’t leaving without tasting some of the local tipple!

Wander the extensive grounds

The premises are surrounded by forest so we wandered out one of the gates and let the boys run around. They just loved it (plenty of sticks to collect in a forest, because of course their collection at home isn’t big enough ????)

Good to know

  • If you head a little further down the Rheingau definitely pop in at Dillman Winery
  • The property is also home to a hotel where you can spend a night or two exploring the Rheingau Wineries
