Farah Cook: The Homesick Project
Tell us about yourself and your background?
I am a Pakistani-Danish Author. I grew up in Copenhagen and lived in London where I worked as marketing manager in the financial industry for nearly a decade before moving to Germany.
Farah Cook publisher author, has a nice ring to it! Tell us about this journey?
Well, it has been a hard and long journey. I decided to quit my job in marketing and experiment with self publishing for two years, which resulted in a trilogy, The Viking Assassin. The books did well and received fantastic reviews on amazon.com, but self publishing meant 90% marketing and 10% writing. Consequently I realised that I wanted to write 100 percent and decided to do an MA in Creative Writing full-time.

I worked many hours late at night on creative assignments and was offered a PhD at the university of Surrey. However, I declined and instead decided to apply for a highly competitive writer’s course in London and got accepted. I spent six months drafting my novel while doing the course.
Finally, I pitched my manuscript to a pool of agents and secured one from London’s top agencies. However, let me point out nineteen publishers rejected my first book. But I kept going and wrote a new novel. ‘Care for Me’ will be out in October 2021.

You moved to Frankfurt from London with your young family. How has the transition been?
The transition was smooth and handled by my husband’s work. Also, the timing was right, similar to many who moved from the U.K. to Germany due to Brexit. In addition to that I have made some great friends in the two years we have been here.
We sure there have been high’s and lows. What have been some obstacles you didn’t expect and some of the victories that surprised you.
Low: It surprised me that my older son’s school did not take the bullying he was subjected to seriously. We addressed the matter several times with this school, but getting bullied in Germany is not as serious as it is in the U.K.
High: A victory was getting my younger son into nursery. He was offered a place immediately despite the long waiting lists. As a result, he’s learned German fast and made lots of local friends.
What tips do you have for people moving to Frankfurt and its surroundings?
Make sure you connect with like minded people. Actively seek expats and international environments. It takes time to befriend Germans. Learn the rules and adapt to the German culture. They are quite anal and unforgiving about their systems and procedures.
What/where is your favourite place/thing to go/do since moving?
Travel and culture. Living in Germany means I can sit in my car and drive anywhere. (France, Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Croatia etc.) Germany has a lot of big cities. Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Hamburg, and Frankfurt with their own culture and traditions.
What are your must do’s for people who have newly moved here?
Take part in the local festivals and annual Christmas markets. Visit other cities and experience the diverse German culture. Food is greatly celebrated in different places and needs to be enjoyed. Visit the local bakeries and try new things. Every Sunday Germans go to the bakery for their three o’clock cake which they take with tea and coffee at home..
What do you miss most about home? Or the places you’ve lived?
Flexibility. Germans are very set in their ways. Not everyone is obliged to follow all the processes and all the procedures all the time which the society imposes.
What is your favourite place in Frankfurt?
Münchner Strasse in the Bahnhofsviertel. It is the only place where Frankfurt has a bit of a very big city.

What do you wish Frankfurt had? What is missing in Frankfurt?
Many more inhabitants, many more theaters, many more museums, many more bars and restaurants. Why is Frankfurt not New York?
Any tips or advice for newcomers to Frankfurt?
Frankfurt´s museums, especially the MMK and the Schirn have very fine Opening-Partys, maybe you will find new friends there.
Stay tuned for more stories from those choosing to make Frankfurt and its surroundings home! In the meantime, have read of the other incredible people we’ve interviewed, the people who inspire us and the reason we love The Homesick Project. Perhaps it’s comfort you seek or perhaps it’s inspiration one things for sure though we all here so lets be in it together!
One final note keep your eyes open for Farah Cooks novel coming out October 2021, it’s a crime thriller page turner!
3 Must See Frankfurt Exhibitions
Over the last few weeks I had the absolute pleasure of visiting some fabulous Frankfurt exhibitions! Admittedly I was lucky enough to sneak in just before they all had to close again! And again they remind one of the power of art. Power not only in its creation and viewing but the power to impact through its message!
Must See Frankfurt Exhibitions this Spring
Once again The Städel and The Schirn do not disappoint with their newest exhibitions! Exploring and walking the halls is still one of my favourite pastimes!! Three incredibly different exhibitions but all exceptionally impactful in the messages and stories they tell!
Max Beckmann – The Frankfurt Years, The Städel Museum
The Städel presents Max Beckmann – The Frankfurt Years.
This exhibition connects with Frankfurt on so many levels. Firstly, Max Beckmann spent the longest and a key phase of his life in Frankfurt where he produced a large portion of important works. And secondly, it was in Frankfurt that he developed his characteristic style which would go on to define his work.
The Städel has for the better part of the past 100 years been a strong advocate of Beckmanns work. Notably collecting and studying the artists work over the years. Most recently, thanks to a large joint coming together of both institutions and private donors The Städel acquired the iconic Self-Portrait with Champagne Glass (1919).
It is this piece that sets the exhibit in “motion”, drawing you in and then almost as if to release you it sets you off in an anti-clockwise direction around the exhibition. In addition to this, the exhibition is set into three sections:
- The Self-Portrait. Beckmann’s fixation with this genre is nearly unmatched in classical modern art
- Print making. Drypoint etchings, drawing and lithography
- Beckmann’s life in Frankfurt
Exhibition has been extended until Extended until 8/29/2021

George and Gilbert, Schirnkunsthalle
Calling themselves ‘Living statues’ as they make no distinction between life and art, Gilbert and George have been creating art for over half a century together! Also, there is no denying that the pair know how to make a statement! From their very distinctive formal attire to the topics they address in their large format art works. GO BIG is definitely an idea they subscribe to!
Never one’s to shy aware from big issue topics their art works cover everything from sex, religion, corruption, violence, hope, fear, racial tension, patriotism to addiction and death.

Magnetic North, Schirnkunsthalle
Magnetic North explores Canada and it’s “fairytale” history and landscape.
The exhibition begins by introducing the viewer to the Group of Seven. A group of artists working to illustrate the Canadian landscape in way they felt to be authentic. The concept of ‘Method Acting’ popped into my mind as way to describe the way they were attempting to create their paintings. Immersing themselves in the landscape that they were painting and illustrating, initiating the first Canadian National art movement. However, the illustrations of pristine untouched landscapes contrast with the reality of the the indigenous people who have inhabited and worked the land for generations! A glaring ‘over site’!
Lisa Jacksons film ‘How a people live’ works to highlight and draw attention to this ‘over site’! The short film traces the history of Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw a First Nation (an indigenous Canadian people). Detailing how the Canadian government with complete disregard forcibly uprooted and relocated them leaving far reaching consequences for generations to come alcoholism, homelessness and overcrowding. The film was moving and simultaneously incredibly uncomfortable to watch! Confronted more and more by my white privilege I am ashamed of how rarely this privilege is used to uplift but all too often to oppress. The complete disregard and lack of understanding of one group of people for another literally sucker punches you in the solar plexus.
The impact of Magnetic North, in my opinion, is the two very contrasting stories conveyed in the exhibition. Perception vs reality, colonial vs indigenous, choice vs lack there of, and how ignorance is something so many of us ‘easily’ subscribe to!
The Digital version of Magnetic North is available to view until the museum is allowed to open it’s doors again!
Also, the rotunda remains open during lockdown meaning Caroline Monnet’s Transatlantic film is available to watch! Take a wander through the slightly quieter Römer and take a peak!

Frankfurt Florist: Caro’s Blumen Floral Design
Sometimes In life you meet people who immediately elevate and lift those around them with their energy! Caro is one of those people!! So you can only imagine what her flowers do!
Flowers and nature provide a source of inspiration for Caro which translates into each of the pieces she designs and creates. Originally from Mexico her passion and ‘exotic’ roots also mean that each piece is also finished with a light sprinkling or dusting of love and life! Meaning that the spectacular flower arrangements she magically constructs using either fresh or dried flowers, are honestly something everyone should have. What would a modern woman in today’s society be if she wasn’t multitasking and juggling a million responsibilities at once!? With this in mind, Caro does Weddings (beautiful bridal bouquets), corporate events, workshops and special requests (honestly I think she’d give you the world if she could!) So, if it’s flowers or a Frankfurt Florist you need! Caro is your woman!

The Städel Museum Frankfurt
The Städel Museum was established by banker and businessman Johann Friedrich in 1815 as a civic foundation. Also, the museum ranks as Germany’s oldest museum foundation and houses virtually a complete survey of 700 years of European art. Furthermore, the museum collections span from the early fourteenth century to the present with focuses on (but not limited to) the Renaissance, the Baroque and early Modern Art. Incredibly the Städel collection comprises some 3,100 paintings, 660 sculptures, more than 4,600 photographs and more 100,000 drawings and graphic works. Take a leisurely walk along the south side of the museumsufer, stop for a take away coffee, admire the skyline across the river before you make your way into The Städel Museum. Wander its halls, sit on the benches and take the time to admire the art that adorns the walls. Also, if time allows continue your way along the river and explore the Museum Angewandte Kunst and Portikus – Kunsthalle Some of our favourite exhibitions of The Städel ‘past’ include Vincent Van Gogh, Father of Modernism and Max Beckmann, The Frankfurt Years Schaumainkai 63 60596 Frankfurt am Main Monday: Closed Tues, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun: 10am – 6pm Thursday: 10am -9pmAbout The Städel Museum

Safety in Frankfurt, let’s all get home safely
Safety! A basic human right! In light of recent events in the UK it made me wonder, what is safety in Frankfurt like?
It’s absolutely devastating that once again it takes an absolute tragedy in order for a serious issue to be address and something to be done. It took Sarah to lose her life in order for anyone to notice. Having said that, let me be clear that this extends far beyond just women’s safety and includes many minority groups who too should never have to fear for their lives whilst walking home at night.
So, safety in Frankfurt (bar a few areas) is not regarded as being an issue for the most part. Saying that, neither are the streets of Clapham. And it really drives the point home when I remember how many nights I walked its streets when living in London.
Now, on a brighter note because in fact this article not supposed to be all doom and gloom (I may have fooled you until now 😂). One thing I have realised, is that humans are generally good. And that a small minority are doing their absolute best to try make differences wherever they can. Let’s all try to stand together and makes those voices heard.
HEIMWEGTELEFON, how it works
Step 1: save +493012074182 on your phone
Step 2: call the number when you are walking home at night on your own
Heimwegtelefon is the most extraordinary service, a ‘hotline’ manned by volunteers who chat to you while walk home ensuring that you get there safely. So, for instance you will mention road names and particular landmarks to allow the operator to know where you are and thus should you disappear they are able to get help sent to your last known location immediately!
Good to note, this is not an emergency number and would be best served as a proactive process. Meaning the number doesn’t just roll off the tongue like 911 and you probably better off saving the number and not reading it once and hoping for the best.
Also, whilst most operators will have some level of English it is not a given. However, do not let this stop you from using the service make note of street names, land marks and learn some basic German (or not) and lets all get home safely!
As I mentioned earlier, people are generally good and I wanted to reiterate that this by saying that I only became aware of this service as a result of one of volunteers. This incredible human is taking time not only to man the phones but also to advocate and spread the word on social platforms so that we all might be safe.
As an English speaker I’m not even sure how I would even accidentally stumble upon this information if it weren’t for her sharing. So thank you Ger…
Taxi home and share your trip
Another way to improve your safety in Frankfurt is ‘share your trip’ in taxi apps. I don’t actually think I’ve ever used it though if I’m honest. I will from now on though.
Anyway, first thing first use an app to book. Second make sure the driver fits the description and picture when using the app. Thirdly, share your trip with someone so that they know where you are and when you get home. Also, friends look out for each other, share trips and follow up to make sure everyone gets home safely.
Personal Safety App’s
Today there are a number of different personal safety apps available on IOS and android. And just as everyone has there preference for how they like their tea and coffee, the same can be said for apps. Having said that, here are two that come highly rated:
- bSafe – Never walk alone:
- probably one of the most comprehensive of the safety app’s.
- Developed by a father/daughter duo after Charlen was raped. The idea was to develop an app that could have prevented the rape and collect evidence should it be required in court.
- There is a free and premium version
- Great app for parents who are worried about their kids when they are out on their own
- One Scream:
- this one is voice or rather scream activated!
- Developed for those instance where you are in a dangerous situation but can’t access your phone. The app detects yours panic scream, identifies your location and sends help
Having said all that, it is also so important to be aware of your surroundings and to know where you going! Familiarise yourself with your route before you head home. Last but not least, understand the public transport and have an alternative route in mind if anything changes!
Self Defence
As a rule, always remember when in trouble kick, scream, claw and bite!

So finally, let’s continue to have safety in Frankfurt not making the headlines! Lets support each other, be informed and proactive and not let the perpetrators have the power! Stay safe everyone!!
Transformational Coaching Session with Tajda Glazer
THE CONFESSION
Before I begin and tell you about my coaching session with Tajda Glazer let me first make a confession. A confession about something that has brought me shame and insecurity for many many years!
I started seeing a psychiatrist at the age of 14. And, with that came many many therapists/psychologists. In these sessions I spent much of my time saying the ‘right things’, the kinds of things I knew to be enough to get me through the session! Also, I still see a psychiatrist today.
THE BACKSTORY
Why do I tell you this you may ask?! What does this have to do with my coaching session?! Everything really! Quite simply I think therapy in the traditional sense of the word is an absolute waste of time. Now, before anyone gets themselves tied in a knot disagreeing with me, I have, to some extent changed my opinion.
In my opinion, traditional therapy is not for everyone (and I happen to think I’m one of them) healing and growth came through a different channel for me. It came first, through books! The Chimp Paradox in particular had a staggering effect on me and helped me to look at myself more critically and find my patterns, particularly my negative thought patterns.
Of course many will say my approach is nonsense, and perhaps they right. However after 25 years of therapy, saying the same things and feeling the same way I can’t help but disagree.Having said all this, I refer only to therapy in the traditional sense and my own personal journey. I do not pretend to know what is right for anyone else!
Now, even I know there is only so far books can take you. For some major AHA Moments you need something extra!
THE COACHING SESSION
One of those ‘something extra’ for me came by way of a coaching session with Tajda. I already had a good understanding of what some of my most frequent and reoccurring patterns were but I didn’t have a clear strategy of how to overcome it on my own!
At the start of the session, Tajda also explained how transformational coaching is about looking forward as opposed to looking back. I found this incredibly helpful and feel it played a big part in making the session successful. The relief was immediate when I realised I didn’t have drag up things in my past and it felt like a breathe of fresh air. Now I was open to anything!! I have no control of my past but my future, well, that is all up to me!
So, as I mentioned earlier I’m not particularly sold on the ‘talk it out’ approach. However, Tajda’s manner is incredibly calming and comfortable, she leaves out all the typical therapy questions that make me gag and put my guard up. Over the course of the hour she let me ‘lead’ and work at a pace that I was comfortable with. It was such an organic process and she helped me see that I was more focused and accomplished than I give myself credit for.
Next, we worked on one particular pattern that continually hijacks my progress. With a simple technique I was able to put things into perspective so that it was no longer ‘crippling’. Funny how the human brain always try’s to prove the negative if we let it. Of course that is only the first step, but using the technique and replaying the words and the session we had I continue to make small steps to stop it overwhelming me.

THE OUTCOME
Well, I thoroughly enjoyed the session and I realised that often ‘we know’, we just don’t know that we know!! So for anyone who is reluctant to try traditional therapy, but feels stuck and meh, I highly recommend coaching sessions with Tajda! Read Therapy vs Coaching, it’s great starting point for anyone wanting to know the difference.
Finally, I want to point out, that whilst I’m not a ‘huge fan of therapy’ I would be a shell of a person without my Psychiatrists. Also, there is absolutely not point to suffer in silence!! I’m pretty sure 99% of people would benefit from speaking to someone and there’d be a lot less red tape in life!
A NOTE FROM TAJDA
Long-lasting and sustainable change happens when we:
-
address our blocks at the root (blocks are whatever is stopping us on the way to reaching our goals)
-
inquire into and reprogram our limiting beliefs
-
stay consistent in aligned action and form a new behavior/way of being over a longer period of time
I find what best serves my clients to achieve the results they are looking for (either internal or external) is to offer them longer coaching containers of at least 3 months, preferably 6 months because that’s where deeper transformational work can happen and it equips them with powerful tools they can use for the rest of their lives.
Change can happen even after one session, but that’s just scratching the surface – in order for clients to make bigger moves towards their goals and start living a life they truly want (fulfilling and loving relationships, more income, a better job/position at work, writing a book, starting a business, more confidence, peace…) we need to go deeper, transform their blocks and create an aligned action plan that will help them create whatever they desire.
This type of work is particularly powerful because we work on 5 levels to ensure transformation – somatic, mental, emotional, behavioral, and unconscious – and it combines transformational and performance coaching with modern spiritual practices.
Working in Germany, cultural nuances explained
Are you moving to or considering living in Germany? Working in Germany?
Moving and working in a new country will always have challenges, regardless of your flexibility and adaptability! Having said that, a little insight and being ‘prepped’ on what to expect can go a long way to minimise those challenges! Often, we arrive fresh off the boat with nothing more than our preconceived ideas and a suitcase full of stereotypes.
So, if Germany is your intended destination, here are a few insights into German culture to maximise your experience and make your new adventure a smooth one. As they say, forewarned is forearmed!
Please note this is written from a broad perspective and is not meant to cause offence. Talking about culture is always a little tricky 🙂
Common Comments from Expats working and living in Germany
Move to any new country and I can guarantee that you hear all about the negative things people experience long before the positives! The tendency too to continuously compare where they are to where they have come from. I find this incredibly interesting; why move then? Of course, people say their ‘job requires it’ or ‘because of my spouse’, but there is always a choice involved unless you are a child. If where you are is perfect, why leave?
Having lived in Germany for the better part of three years, here are some of the comments internationals have. I will do my best to dispel these later in the post:
Comment 1:
- ‘Germans take rules seriously and feel it’s their social duty to keep each other in check’
- ‘Too direct’
Comment 2:
- ‘Germans are arrogant’
Comment 3:
- ‘The Germans are unfriendly and cold’
I recently came across Erin Meyer and her book The Culture Map! It was almost as if the heavens opened, and the angels began to sing! Was it possible to actually contextualise behaviours and tendencies of a particular country/culture in a meaningful way? And the answer is yes!! The other good news is that Erin Meyer (along with a host of other anthropologists) has done all the hard work for you, so all you need to do is be willing to learn.
Ok, primarily, her book deals with business and doing business, but it got me thinking whether it couldn’t perhaps translate into everyday life in Germany!!? And in my opinion, it absolutely can to some degree.
By taking the time to try and understand the other perspective rather than judge, life already becomes easier.
The Culture Map and how it works?
In essence, The Culture Map prioritises 8 scales when comparing one culture to another, namely:
- Communicating
- Evaluating
- Persuading
- Leading
- Deciding
- Trusting
- Disagreeing
- Scheduling
Also important to note, the absolute positioning of where a country/culture lies on the scale is of less importance than where it lies in relation to another country/culture. In other words, by mapping one culture vs another, one is able to identify potentially contentious areas and address them. This is not to say one way is better than another, but rather that each approach is different and thus can lead to frustrations and potentially avoidable problems!
So, for anyone experiencing huge frustrations, trying to consider where their country/culture lies in relation to Germany on that particular ‘issue’ may provide a lot of insight!
Working/living in Germany, the bits that no one explains
So, now comes the bit where we try to give some context and explain the ‘between the lines’ bits (or lack thereof in Germany).
Comment 1:
- ‘Germans take rules seriously and feel it’s their social duty to keep each other in check’
- ‘Too direct’
The Germans are a low-context society. Meaning, they are explicit and direct in their communication as well as with how they offer direct negative feedback. It is not intended to be offensive but rather a simple sign of honesty, transparency and respect. So, whilst Americans may also have a low context society, the way they provide negative feedback is very contrasting to Germany; that is to say, they provide three positives before offering negative feedback.
Ok, yes, this can, at times, feel like you are back in grade school, only now the teacher reprimands you because the tyres on your car are ever so slightly too close to the parking divide line! However, I have found the perfect diffusion is to say “I’m sorry?” in English with a slight look of confusion (this may also be helped by the fact that I’m blonde 😜)
Worth mentioning, too, are cyclists, and in fact, who is to say which are even German as they wave their arms furiously at you with their headphones in! All I know is that they tend to be a fairly angry bunch. I think I may fear them more than the Politzei! Dear heaven, I thought exercise released endorphins and that endorphins are supposed to make you happy!
Comment 2:
- ‘Germans are arrogant and inflexible’
From school age, German culture builds/acquires their knowledge from a deductive reasoning point of view (along with France, Russia, Spain and Italy). Meaning that first, you understand the framework, and second, you apply it to practicalities. For instance, if you present to a German audience it is important to provide the framework and reference point from which you work. If you fail to provide this information, you can expect to be questioned intensely in this regard as your audience tries to attain this information. Of course, this may come across as arrogant, undermining and very direct to many. So, to clarify, theory and background are first, and practical application second.
Also, Germany is very egalitarian (consensual) in their decision making. That is to say, decision-making is an inclusive process. Meaning it takes incredibly long; however, once the decision is made, it is very difficult to change. This contrasts, for example, with America, which is hierarchical (i.e. the boss decides) in their approach, but this decision is very open to change and often.
Comment 3:
- ‘Germans are unfriendly and cold’
To address this, we must first understand the Coconut and Peach Model of interpersonal interaction.
- Coconut, people are more closed to new people that they meet. Rarely smile at strangers, don’t ask casual acquaintances personal questions or offer personal information. The relationship takes longer to ‘crack’. Like a coconut, it has a hard exterior and is difficult to crack, but the inside has no hard centre.
- Peach tend to be ‘soft’ with those that they have just met. However, the pip is where the peach protects its real self. Like a peach, there is the ‘hard pip’ in the middle.
German Culture is defined as being a coconut culture.
In the book, it mentions a Russian saying: ‘If we pass a stranger on the street who is smiling, we know with certainty that person is crazy…or else American.’ Russia is another coconut culture. It’s worth pointing out that in all my encounters on public transport where I was lost and couldn’t speak the language (still can’t 😬), it was Americans who came to my rescue!
This, too, I have found not to be the case in my experience! Starting TFE the number of incredible German women (and men) who have been not only encouraging but so willing to help (using their “terrible English”) has been extraordinary!
TOOLS FOR MANAGERS
On Meyers’s website, there are some great tools (for a small fee) to culturally map you and your team. This can help provide valuable insights into how you and, perhaps more importantly, how each of your team works.
Of course, you do not need to use these tools. You can simply buy The Culture Map book, which provides a broad perspective.
Finally, while the world might feel a smaller place, let’s not forget that it’s not so small that we don’t still have our differences! These differences/nuances are what keep us travelling, keep us curious and most importantly keep us ‘unique’. Embrace the differences and enjoy working/living in Germany!
Additional information
- I highly recommend buying The Culture Map by Erin Meyer regardless of where you live in the world.
11 Questions: English Yoga Meetup
Frankfurt is full of small businesses run by incredible, strong and dynamic women! Today we introduce you to Solveig, founder and owner of English Yoga Meetup. Although who we kidding, you probably all well aware of this vivacious woman and the incredible service she provides!! For those of you who aren’t and are looking for a safe and welcoming yoga meetup, keep reading!
To quote BKS Iyengar – Yoga does not change the way we see things, it transforms the person who see’s. So without further a do, meet Solveig!
1. Tell us about yourself. What is your background?
Hi, I am Solveig. I am a sidepreneur and founder of English Yoga Meetup, Frankfurt’s biggest international community. I am German, although people tend to say that my first name doesn’t sound so German (it’s Norwegian actually) and I have a weird accent, when I speak English. Originally, I am from Thuringia, close to Erfurt. I have lived, travelled and studied abroad quite a bit, but Frankfurt has become my hub within the last years.

2. When did you start English Yoga Meetups?
I launched the community in May 2017, after coming back from my 5 months sabbatical in Australia, where I did my teacher training. Initially I launched the group on the Meetup app, which was quite a thing at this time, but has become a bit outdated today.
3. What inspired you to start English Yoga Meetups?
I had also used the meetup app to meet some Australians, while living Down Under and liked the app to join some local events. However, I got bored by the other backpackers because it was always kind of the same conversation: “Where do you come from? What do you do? Where do you go next?” And then silence. Because it didn’t go beyond the small talk level. I used the app and joined some yoga in the park sessions in Adelaide. It was fun. And in the local yoga studio I met some friends and we had a good time together.
After my trip I went back to Frankfurt. I tried a few yoga studios, but it was all very clique-style. So everyone knows each other and they just speak with each other, but it was hard to get into their circle. I felt like, it matters what kind of outfit I wear, what kind of yoga mat I have and if I manage to do the split and handstand. To put it in a nutshell, I didn’t feel comfortable. This was not my type of people I wanted to hang out with. I wanted to create a yoga space where everyone feels welcome.
My mission was and still is to make yoga affordable and accessible to foreigners in Frankfurt. German is hard enough to learn and sometimes you don’t really get what the yoga teacher is telling you, if you can’t follow the language. That’s why all our classes are in English.

4. What has been the most rewarding thing about this group?
The people I have met along the way. Your vibe attracts your tribe. So I have a met a lot of other amazing women, who share the same passion for a healthy lifestyle, travels and mindfulness. I am also proud, that we were always able to spend some part of our profits to (local) non-profit organisations.
5. What does self-care mean to you?
Taking time off for myself. Sometimes it’s such a luxury when your smartphone battery dies and you are offline the whole day and spend it outside in nature.
6. For those who would like to practice more self-care, what advice do you have?
It’s all about the little things. You don’t have to travel to Bali and find enlightment (although I did and it didn’t work haha). You have to change your daily routine first.
Start with small healthy habits, that you integrate into your life, e.g. journaling, tongue scraping, oil pulling, 20min of movement everyday.

7. If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be? Why?
Good question. I love to collaborate with local brands and locations. I like when it’s all coming together: great spot, great music vibes, yoga, healthy buffet in an urban setting. I love the idea to spend one exciting day with our community and go on a mini yoga retreat for a day. 25hours hotel, Gerbermühle and Ooosten are still on my list of preferred collaboration partners.
8. Many internationals come to your meetups, what advice do you have for newcomers to Frankfurt?
I think, it’s really hard to arrive in Frankfurt now. First of all it’s winter, so there is less going on and we have the corona situation. So meeting up with others is definitely a challenge. I think, it’s a time, where you can feel isolated very quickly. Nevertheless, it’s still important to have kind of a social life. Maybe check with your German language school if they offer side activities so that you can meet others. Or check some groups on Facebook and start a conversation over there. Let yourself guide you by your interests.
9. What do you love about Frankfurt?
It’s quite compact so that I can go almost anywhere by bike and can skip public transport. I also like that it’s getting more and more international.
10. What is your favourite place in Frankfurt?
Definitely Holzhausenpark. Love it for picnic.
11. What do you wish Frankfurt had? What is it missing?
Frankfurt is missing space. Not just living space, but also space that you can easily rent for events without getting broken at the same time.

Frankfurt Fashion Week: Hosting the Future of Fashion

FRANKFURT AND FASHION IN THE SAME SENTENCE
So you’ve probably heard that Frankfurt is getting a fashion week. Now I’m going to be totally honest with you for a moment, when I first heard the news my reaction was, what the actual BEEEP! Frankfurt and fashion in the same sentence?! Really? Ok I was also annoyed that my seasonal Berlin Fashion Week Trip just got cancelled, forever! Not ideal.
But actually Frankfurt having its first Fashion Week is honestly, incredible. Frankfurt is taking a major initiative and hosting the very first completely sustainable fashion week ever in the world. This is huge. So what exactly is going on here? Well, next summer, 5-9 July 2021, three major trade shows along with fashion presentations will be moving to Frankfurt from Berlin. Premium, SEEK and NEONYT along with digital presentations, talks and runways shows will showcase sustainable fashion. And for the very first time ever there will be a SKTWK (Skate Week) Showcasing cool clothing, art and presentations in the skate world.
The initiators of Frankfurt Fashion Week, Messe Frankfurt and the Premium Group along with Conscious Fashion Campaign have formed a collaboration with the United Nations Office for Partnerships. Messe Frankfurt will build on its collaboration with the United Nations Office for Partnerships and establish Frankfurt Fashion week as the platform on which to advance the Sustainable Development Goals and help guide the fashion industry into the ‘Decade of Action’.
The aim of Frankfurt Fashion Week is for all exhibitors, participants and partners to align with the Sustainable Development Goals by 2023. These will be incorporated into all formats of Frankfurt Fashion Week. This will help to make the UN’s sustainability goals visible and tangible for the Fashion Week audience. During a one-day Frankfurt Fashion SDG Summit presented by Conscious Fashion Campaign, topics like gender equality, clean water, climate protection, social justice and their significance for a forward-looking fashion industry will be examined in greater depth.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR FRANKFURT
A key feature of Frankfurt Fashion Week will be the consistent involvement of the entire city. Frankfurt will therefore become a stage for contemporary fashion presentations and a discourse space for dialogue between fashion professionals and a fashion-savvy public. A board with 11 creative agencies has been created here in Frankfurt to design a game-changing creative concept for the city. This includes boutiques, museums, universities, brands, arts, musicians, you name it, everyone here in Frankfurt will be involved. Showcasing major talent right here in Frankfurt.

The Paperbag, an interview with the duo behind the name
Paper… it’s pretty practical. We use it everyday, well most of us do, and for the most part it’s a necessity wouldn’t you say? Have you every thought about a tote shopper bag made out of paper??!!!! I know, genius! Well, it has been done and it’s been done in a very cool and sophisticated way. Valerie and Jenny from The Paperbag have created a very useful, very cool bag that is not only made out of paper but it’s FSC certified and complies with OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. And basically, these certifications are very important in the sustainable world.
Also, they recently teamed up with the uber cool Lottermann and Fuentes duo to bring us a cool collaboration – A mint and purple colour combo. Unique and fun just like the duo themselves.
We had the chance to catch up with the The Paperbag duo and ask them some questions about their brand. Read on to find out more.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELVES? WHAT ARE YOUR BACKGROUNDS?
We are Valerie from Frankfurt – product design studies, mom of 2 kids.
And Jenny from Starnberg – product design studies, mom of 2 kids.
HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET?
2006 about a joint job.
WHEN DID THE IDEA FOR THE PAPERBAG EMERGE?
In 2018 we “discovered” paper and from this grew the idea of working with this great material and setting up a joint project
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FROM THE INITIAL IDEA TO YOUR FIRST PRODUCT?
The process certainly took over 1.5 years. Our first attempt with the paper was the implementation of a shoe. But we quickly realized that it was not the “right” product for the material.
Then followed relatively quickly the idea to take up the classic paper bag. A product that captivates by its simplicity and clear form, but the material gives the possibility to make the product more durable, resistant, sustainable but also more contemporary and valuable.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR CHALLENGES ALONG THE WAY?
We tested for a long time until the cut, the seams, etc. fit. The material is special due to its nature, but also challenging – haptically it is like leather, but is sensitive due to its components in the processing. Ie. We had to tinker with the weak points for a long time until we really had a durable and stable product, as now our shopper in our hands.
In addition, the search for a sewing shop that has experience with the material and also met our qualitative requirements was a longer process.

WHAT DOES SUSTAINABILITY MEAN TO YOU?
The following points are important for our label:
Our products are timeless. Our paperbag should be able to be used 24/7 as a bag. A bag for every occasion, a conscious use of the products that accompany our everyday life, a bag for everyone.
The paper is FSC certified and complies with the OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. For every tree felled, 3 new ones are planted. We attach importance to a conscious contact with nature.
Furthermore, we care about a healthy growth of our company: slow and steady, as we have achieved in the past. The ability to stick to our values and vision.
We work non-seasonally, i.e. small quantities (no mass production) and short supply routes within the entire production
FOR THOSE WANTING TO BECOME MORE SUSTAINABLE IN THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THEM?
Don´t think too much about what exactly you want to change in as many areas as possible.
Pick one area that is easy for you, such as nutrition or living, and start consuming more conscious. The rest comes all by itself.
DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE, DID THIS PLAY ANY PART IN THE BRANDS STYLE?
We can only sell what we like ourselves and what we stand for. It varies from minimalist to colorful and loud – of course also depending on the situation and mood. The interest for beautiful fabrics and interesting materials has always accompanied us.
DESCRIBE YOUR CUSTOMER, WHAT KIND OF PERSON ARE THEY?
We want to design products that are suitable for everyday use and that everyone can combine and wear in the way he or she wants in the respective situation.
WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
We wake up in the morning and simply try to make the best of the day. Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don’t, sometimes the day leaves lasting and inspiring impressions, sometimes it doesn’t.
BEING A WOMEN RUN COMPANY, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN OUT THERE THAT WOULD LIKE TO START THEIR OWN THING?
It is very helpful for us that we work as a team. We are not alone. That means we decide everything together and bear the responsibility together. This has encouraged us to take the step into self-employment. But also, with a realistic view: failure is part of it and is even important in order to grow from the constant challenges.
The fact is: if the desire is so strong and won’t let go, then hold on to it!

German Healthcare Insurance, A ‘Medical’ Conundrum
German Healthcare Insurance, a straight forward affair? In short, anything but I’m afraid!
Undoubtedly those new in Frankfurt and Germany will have encountered their fair share of stress and confusion deciphering the healthcare and insurance systems when arriving! Admittedly it’s not the easiest to navigate particularly if you don’t speak the language! For this reason we attempt to make things a little less confusing for you and summarise the basics below.
German Healthcare Insurance a brief overview
Firstly, it is obligatory for everyone living and studying in Germany to have health insurance. Secondly, Germany has a two tier system:
Public Healthcare Insurance (Gesetzliche Krankenkasse or GKV)
- Refers to State or Government health insurance. Contributions are calculated in accordance with your earnings
-
It is calculated at a basic rate of 14.6 % plus a possible average supplemental rate of 1.3 % of your eligible gross salary with a cap set at a maximum monthly income of 4,837 Euros (as of 2021 figures)
- Many German residents are publicly insured
- If you are employed in Germany your employer pays 50% of your health contributions
- Receiving unemployment compensation (Arbeitslosengeld I) from the German Agency of Labour makes you a mandatory member of the public health scheme.
Private Healthcare Insurance (Private Krankenversicherung or PKV)
Contributions are determined by health and circumstances. Also, be aware that there are various levels of coverage to choose from. For example they range from very basic to very comprehensive coverage plans and contributions are determined accordingly.
Prerequisites for PKV
- an employee earning more than €64,350 (2021);
- self-employed
- a freelancer
- a civil servant or other public employee
-
-
-
Pros:
- appointment waiting times are reduced
- higher level of service (admittedly though this is not a given)
- many alternative therapies are covered
-
Cons:
- Contributions are per person. In other words, it may be cheaper for a young single person in good health as opposed to for a family with more than 2 children
- It is very difficult to go back to State/Public insurance once you are privately insured. However it is not impossible, there are a few very limited scenarios that make you eligible ie loss of job and thus income.
- after the age of 55 regardless of circumstance, it is impossible to revert ie go back to State/Public insurance.
-
-
How to be Eligible for State Funded Healthcare
- Register with the German authorities at your local town hall (Einwohnermeldeamt).
- Have a German Social Insurance number (Sozialversicherungsnummer)
- Be making National insurance contributions
- Register with a health insurance fund (they will issue you health insurance card (Krankenversichertenkarte)). Your employer should provide you with the details of their preferred provider and guide you through the process
- Receiving unemployment compensation (Arbeitslosengeld I) from the German Agency of Labour makes you a mandatory member of the public health scheme.
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles holders with statutory health insurance to receive medical services across Europe. Moreover, those who are legally insured in Germany do not have to apply for the European Health Insurance Card. It is automatically printed on the back of the insurance card.

Men’s Clothing and fashion: Where to Shop?
When it comes to women’s fashion it’s pretty easy. I could tell you 50 stores off the top of my head, ok maybe that’s an exaggeration, but it’s way easier. But what about men’s clothing and fashion? Yeah, not so easy. And let’s be honest, men need cool clothes too! Yeah ok, they may not shop as often as we do, but shops are needed for when they do.
So with this in mind, I’ve put together a list in no particular order of the coolest menswear shops in Frankfurt. Now with the current Corona situation physical shopping is not a possibility but many of these shops have an online store or you can contact them directly to tell them what you need. Also keep in mind these shops are desperate for your business. So for this reason, I encourage you to shop local and not hit up Amazon. And besides, these shops are cool and Amazon cannot provide you with the style you are looking for!

Spiritual Therapy and how can it help you?
“So, spiritual therapy” I hear you say, “how can it help me?” Well, have you ever had a time in your life where you just felt stuck, hopeless, confused and annoyed with how things were going? Yeah, I know the feeling, I’ve been there too.
I grew up in a very strict fundamental Christian home. My dad was a minister, so God was a very BIG part of our lives. I’ve never doubted there was a God but I felt there was more to the picture then I was being lead to see. The thing is, I think everything is connected and astrology and spirituality go hand in hand. I was taught that new age and anything to do with tarot, birth charts or anything that wasn’t praise Jesus was evil or down right wrong. But I don’t believe this at all. I believe that spirituality comes in all forms and many of us will relate to one form or another a bit more. For me, I relate to it more in the form of tarot, human design, crystals, mediation and yes prayer. I still pray, believe it or not, but I’ve found a way for me to connect to my spirituality in my way and not in the form of my parents.
Spiritual therapy is there to guide you, to help you find the answers within yourself, it promotes positive thinking, self-belief and it has you looking inward so you can become a better, more focused you. I personally found with hardcore religion or Christianity, many people completely ignored their true desires, stopped looking inward and made excuses for why they would keep making the same mistakes over and over again. They were blaming God for their issues when in reality they weren’t actually fixing the problem themselves. I found people to be co-dependent on God, where they literally stopped making decisions or thinking for themselves.
Now don’t get me wrong, I do believe some people have found complete freedom with their relationship with God and that’s great, it’s just not for all of us and definitely not for me. I have found more clarity, direction and ease in spiritual therapy.
Below I describe many different kinds of therapy. I hope you find one that resonates with you. If you have any questions, get a hold of me, I’m here to help!

Tarot cards/reading:
A Tarot reading is used as a guidance to answer questions you may have. It’s not there to tell your future but to simply guide you to the answers you most likely already know deep down inside. They are there to encourage you to be bold and brave and go after what you want. They help remind you of what is there for you to work on in your life.
The Tarot is a symbolic map of consciousness that encompasses our journey through life, both spiritually and practically.
Tarot reading is the practice of divining wisdom and guidance through a specific spread of Tarot cards. However, contrary to popular belief, the cards do not simply tell your fortune, rather they are meant to provide insight into your inner most truths of your higher self. The cards provide you with awareness with what you already know.

Crystals/Chakra rocks:
Crystals and/or charka stones provide healing in your body and mind. They are used to open your charkas and bring positivity and answers to you. Many use healing crystals in their mediation practice or use them as affirming affirmations and gaining power for what you want out of life. Crystals have existed on earth for millions of years and they are used as a tool which works with your energy field to absorb, focus and direct energies.
I’ve been intrigued by crystals for a while now but wasn’t sure where to start. But luckily a friend of mine recently sent me a chakra crystal set. It’s perfect and now I can learn about them. Included in my set:
-
CROWN Quartz (white): Overall balance of the charka system, will amply with any other crysta
-
THIRD EYE Amethyst (purple): Enhances understanding knowledge and mental organizing, also pop under your pillow for restful sleep
-
THROAT Sodalite (blue): Communication, personal expression and the flow of information
-
HEART Green Quartz (green): Relationships and personal development
-
OLAR PLEXUS Citrine (yellow): Self-confidence and personal power, great for indecision
-
SACRAL Agate (orange): Creativity, feelings and sexual drive
-
BASE Hermatite (black): Grounding, stability energy distribution and physical survival
I’ve been sleeping with the amethyst crystal under my pillow and I’ve been sleeping like a baby. Also waking up very refreshed.
I’ve just ordered The Crystal Code by Tamara Driessen to learn more about the power of crystals and I’m planning on orderingThe Power of Crystal Healing by Emma Lucy Knowles

Meditation:
Meditation is a practice using mindfulness to focus the mind and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state. Learning to quite the mind of all the noise in and around us. Once you learn to quiet the noise, you then can hear your inner voice.
Meditation has been proven to help with focus, anxiety, depression and overall mental health.
I started mediating years ago but then stopped. I’m slowly getting back into it. I use the app Headspace. I really love it as it starts slow and gradually takes you through the many processes of meditation. It is a skill, so it does take practice. Like with any habit, once you get into it, it becomes part of your daily routine and you’ll miss it when you don’t do it.
Here are some great apps:

Birth chart/Natal Chart reading:
A birth chart reveals the location of the planets in the sky at the time of your birth. An analysis of this chart also called a natal chart, can provide deep insight into your personality, motivations, and desire.
A birth chart reading is super interesting but can get quite complicated. It’s good to have the reader explain all the important bits to you if you’re not familiar with how the chart works. But it can provide you with a lot of insight.

Human design:
Human Design is a mix of astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah and the Chakra system.
With Human Design you discover what makes you different from everyone else. It offers profound insights into your psychology, along with strategies and techniques for making correct decisions and ultimately leading to a life of more ease and fulfillment.
I had never really had much interest in human design until a friend messaged me via Instagram asking me if I was a projector. I was like what? What is that? She said to find out what my type was, so I google human design charts and went for it. I’m actually a generator.
I went to Jovian Archive and typed in my birth date, time I was born and birthplace and then it calculated my chart.
At first the chart is very confusing, but then I decided to dig deeper and order the book so I could educate myself on this crazy chart. The more I read about my chart the more interested I became as it’s freakily very accurate. Then I ordered my blueprint from Erin Claire Jones, she specializes in Human Design. All I gotta say is this blueprint helped me soo much!

Affirmations:
I’ve never been one to do affirmations, but I’m slowly coming round. I’ve seen the power of affirmations work with friends, so I’ve figured why not. Positive vibes and thoughts all the way.
I started The Artist’s Way Workbook by Julia Cameron and it has you doing affirmations every day, so I’m hoping these stir up positive vibrations into the universe and into my consciousness, no more doubting myself!!!!
Give it a go. It will set your day straight. There are so many affirmations on the internet or via Instagram. Figure out what you are wanting help with and then start proclaiming positivity with these sayings.
Journaling:
My mother journals. As long as I can remember she has journaled every day, a true believer in writing down your thoughts. I could never get into it, until recently, and now, I am a true believer. It’s amazing how good it feels to get your thoughts down on paper. If you’re like me, your head is full of fog, thoughts, doubt, to-do lists, ideas, etc and sometimes this can be so overwhelming. I find when I write it down, it’s out of my head and I can then focus on the important things. I journal in the morning and at night. My morning journaling is to get all the negativity out of my head so I can start the day off right and my nighttime journaling is for reviewing my day, setting my intentions and just writing really.
Give it a try. Start small. You don’t have to write much, and it can literally just be writing a list of words that come to mind or a to-do list. It’s very therapeutic, I promise.

Mask wearing: are you guilty of any of these 7 Mistakes?
Mask wearing! A year ago no-one could have imagined how important the mask wearing topic would be. Skip to the present and mask wearing is more important than ever! However, how many of the below mistakes are you guilty of without even realising it? We list 7 mistakes people make, some may be obvious whilst other not so much!
1. Forgetting to Wash or Sanitise your hands before and after mask wearing
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you should wash or sanitise (with at least 60% alcohol) your hands before and after touching/removing your mask!
2. Reusing Disposable Masks
Disposable masks are designed for single use. After that they should be thrown away as they begin to break down and lose the ability to filter correctly also they begin to harbour micro-organisms. Following on from this, disposable masks should not be washed and reused. Once the disposable mask gets wet it begins to breakdown and this reduces its ability to protect you!
3. Not washing your reusable mask nearly enough
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you ‘wash your cloth mask whenever it gets dirty or at least daily.’
4. Not storing your masks correctly
- Clean masks: Your mask should be kept in a dry, breathable bag (like a paper or mesh fabric bag) to keep it clean between uses. Additionally, when reusing your mask, keep the same side facing out
- Dirty/Wet masks (sweat, saliva, make-up, or other liquids): Dirty or wet masks should be stored in a sealed plastic bag until they can be washed. Not only do wet masks not only make it more difficult to breathe but they render the mask less effective.
5. Not fully covering your Nose and mouth
Now, whilst this may seem like an obvious point, the number of people making this mistake is frightening! Someone likened it to not covering your ‘bits’ when putting on your underwear, and what’s the point in that right??
For further information see how to wear a mask see the CDC recommendations
A study published by Cell (journal) cited that “Ciliated airway cells and AT-2 cells are primary targets for SARS-CoV-2 infection”. In other words, it is critical to cover the nose when wearing a mask to significantly reduce transmission.
6. Sharing Masks
Another seemingly obvious mistake, don’t share masks! Unless of course it has been washed and cleaned.
7. You are not washing your face after wearing a mask
Noticing spots, unexplained bouts of acne (maskne) along with redness and increased sensitivity?? Well, this could be why! Now add an unwashed mask and a layer of makeup to the mix and you have a perfect storm!
Keeping your skin and mask clean is vital to maintain that that glowing and spot free complexion
