Cafe Kante

There are a few places in Frankfurt that are considered institutions, meaning, they have been around since the beginning of time. One of the first things people asked me when I moved to Frankfurt was “have you been to Cafe Kante yet?”  Let’s just say I got myself there as fast as I could. The fact that it’s around the corner from my house is not bad either. Located right near Merianplatz it’s definitely the locals hangout.

Walk inside and it’s like taking a walk back in time. If the walls could talk I’m sure they’d have stories to tell. I tend to head to Cafe Kante when it’s nice out so I can sit outside.

One thing you can always count on is good coffee, scrumptious kuchen and a very nice and friendly server.

Definitely hit up this legend of a place.

Günthersburgpark

Günthersburgpark

Günthersburgpark is an absolutely beautiful expanse of green sitting snuggly between Bornheim & Nordend – perfect for a picnic with friends, a cycle or run, pit stop or simply a get out the house with the kids!

Come summer or winter this park is an absolute ‘must know’ in any parents armoury!

Summer months has the fountains and ever popular water slide which has your little humans running in circles for hours (whilst learning the ever important art of patience….the queue snakes with excited children desperately waiting their turn whilst calculating the risk/reward of jumping the line!)

Winter & summer months has the playground with slides, swings, sandpits, basketball court & football pitch which is literally anywhere and everywhere….

The other thing to love about Gunthers is the little cafe/kiosk providing the often necessary shot of caffeine, alcohol beverage & emergency snack when the picnic is devoured 30 seconds after arrival.  Also, the all important ice cream, perfect for meltdown management & hometime bribery!!

Located in Innenstadt this gem is welcoming, full of life and very friendly. You’ll find all walks of life sipping on a coffee or a cocktail.

It’s a great place to take your family or go on your own.

Ebbelwei-Expreß

Ebbelwei-Expreß a MUST DO in Frankfurt

Looking for a fun excursion with the family?

Well, look no further. I would definitely recommend the Ebbelwei-Expreß. This charming tram has been running since 1977. In January 1977, Stadtwerke Frankfurt commissioned two artists, CM and Estine Estenfelder to design the exterior and interior of a vintage K-carriage tram. A Traveling Cider Pub was their inspiration and it’s been a novelty ever since.

Finally after living here in Frankfurt for 8 months, my family and I finally took some friends visiting us on the famous Ebbelwei-Expreß. It’s a great way to show your guests a bit of Frankfurt while drinking an Apfelwein and eating a bag of pretzels.

The tour begins at the Zoo and makes its way to the Bahnhofsviertel, down to Sachsenhausen and then back up to the Zoo. You can hop on and off at any of the tram stops. (stop list on their website)

Not ready for the Fun to end?

Well, if after your Ebbelwei-Expreß ride you not quite ready to go home then let the good times roll!!  Check out our best trinkhallen in Frankfurt and settle down in one of the glorious parks you find all around the city!

Good to know:

  • Tickets: Can be purchased from the conductor before hoping on.
  • Adults – €8.00, includes 1 hour journey, 1 Apfelwein and a bag of pretzels ad of course an experience.
  • Kids – €3.50 includes a juice and a bag of pretzels
  • Additional drinks can be purchased for €2.50
  • Getting on at Hauptbahnhof be ready for a few to pass you by before being able to get a seat

Café Croquant

A little piece of France in the heart of Europaviertel.

It’s sometimes easy to be distracted by all the building works going on along Europa Allee that you may be forgiven for completely missing this gem of a cafe! Now that you know about it though….

Walking into Croquant it’s as if you’ve stumbled into a cafe you might expect to find in the French countryside! An enormous wooden table and stools commands the centre of the room, the black and white cubed floor provides an absolutely brilliant contrast and finally the ‘exposed’ walls and ‘worn’ ceiling complete the look!

Up at the counter, pastries and sweets absolutely delight the eye (at the expense of the waist) and the lady behind serving us was simply delightful (and patient as my two little ‘monsters’ took their time deciding on the most fitting snack for the moment)!

The breakfasts are simply decadent in every sense of the word!!! Think fresh fruit, avocado, smoked salmon, Parma ham, Camembert, goats cheese….platters that are so beautifully constructed that they literally leave you wondering whether you committing a sin by eating them!

Good to know:

  • parking can be a nightmare

Kids activities frankfurt

Dynochrom

Seriously, climbing 30cm off the ground…how difficult can it be right???

Dear heaven people…difficult, really difficult!! I don’t believe I have any finger nails left and my hands are rough as a badgers behind (and don’t even talk to me about my shoulders)…saying that what a great workout and the kids absolutely loved it!!!

The climbing centre is set in an enormous warehouse on the outskirts of Ostend, plenty of space for everyone (saying that in the late afternoons the place does fill up). Inside the vibe is very retro with a great coffee shop which serves food for hunger riddled climbers (aka screaming children!) and also has an outside area which is fantastic in the summer!

Give it a go…maybe not right after you’ve had a mani though ????

Good to know:

  • climbing shoes can be hired on site
  • separate climbing area for kids younger than 7
  • great for the whole family

Old Fritz

I want to talk about Old Fritz for a second. It’s definitely going to become my neighbourhood hangout. Set on Mousonstraße just off of Sandweg where I live, it’s literally a 3 minute walk. I had wandered past it several times during the day and it had definitely piqued my interest. Finally a friend had asked if I had a chance to stop in yet.

It’s the new cool kid hang out. Go on a Friday and Saturday night and you might not get in. I can see why, the interior is uber cool, the atmosphere is fun and the cocktails are pretty damn yummy. It’s like walking into a collectors haven of quirky accessories and off the wall trinkets. All I know is you’ll be seeing me in there quite a bit from now on.

Adriane Moll

Adriane Moll Winery, where wine meets art

The discovery of Adriane Moll wines was rather serendipitous if you like.  In fact it was in small coffee shop that no longer exists and one one we rarely visited when it did.  However, the labelling was hard to ignore and so we walked out that day with not only our caffeine fix but also a beautiful bottle of red wine.

Our Introduction to Adriane Moll – The Cabernet Sauvignon

Now this was a great bottle of red (as you can see we couldn’t wait to drink it and had to photograph the empty bottle ????)

If we completely honest we generally fans of the more conventional wine label… saying that we were intrigued by this bottle of wine!

An artist vintner definitely piques our interest!

‘La Passionata’ a beautiful full bodied spicy red did not disappoint. It spent 42 months in the barrel giving it a lovely depth with subtle hints of pepper and paprika coming through. Pouring it into the glass the colour is deep and rich which makes our hearts sing (a halo forms just above the glass ????)

Needless to say The Frankfurt edit thoroughly enjoyed drinking this wine and are very partial to getting a bottle as a gift….anyone?

We will definitely be heading out to Pfalz to visit this glorious winery!

About Adriane Moll Winery

The Moll family has lived in St. Martin since the 17th century.  And since those very early days always been involved in the wine making world or rather always been wine farmers.

Kerbholtz Sunglasses

Inspiration is everywhere if you just choose to notice!

Kerbholtz was inspired by a crazy backpacking trip to Central America in 2011 – 4 friends reimagining the way we use wood!

These sunglasses are probably some of the most comfortable that have ever come to rest on my face (and that says a lot because I love sunglasses and have plenty of them!!). Comfort aside though, they make some beautifully chic products really heroing their material of choice – the grain of the wood never an after thought but rather something that gives each product its ‘uniqueness’

They’ve branched out and now have other accessories and use other natural materials….sustainability though still the focus!

Elaine's Deli

Walk into Elaine’s Deli and it’s like walking into a disco/cool art gallery. The music is blaring cool techno music, the staff look the part and the decor is minimal and open. I would say this is a very hip hang out for hipsters and the city guys alike.

They offer a variety of healthy superfood bowls, wraps, smoothies and yes of course coffee! Let’s not forget that.

The staff are very friendly and speak perfect English if needed. They also have an amazing outside area in the summer. Definitely worth your time!

Michis Schokoatelier

I don’t know about you, but I love chocolate, especially high quality chocolate. Luckily, I can literally roll out of bed and into their shop (their shop is about 200m away from my flat), so cravings don’t last long! This could most definitely be dangerous.

Walk inside this heavenly place and you will find yourself surrounded by the most beautiful selection of chocolates. Whatever tickles your fancy, I’m sure you’ll find it. They have a great selection of pralines and they even have their own the Frankfurter special, pralines infused with apfelwein. I mean, amazing!

Treat yourself or a friend to some chocolate from Michis!

Freizeitpark Lochmühle

Freizeitpark Lochmühle

Around 30 minutes outside of Frankfurt you’ll find Lochmühle amusement park….which provides absolutely brilliant entertainment for kids.  In our opinion it’s great for kids up to around age 12, older than 12 they will probably be wanting bigger rides than on offer here.  And activities for the day include, rollercoasters, slides, pony rides, climbing frames, water rides, rides that spin, rides that swing, rides that make you as a parent positively ill!!  But you name it they’ve got plenty!

Your entrance fee gets you access to everything (so no additional costs for rides etc…so no annoying tokens and queues for tokens once inside)

Kloster Eberbach

Kloster Eberbach Winery

Need to get out of the city?  Kloster Eberbach Winery is an absolutely wonderful day out…with or without kids!

The drive itself is just spectacular with ‘castles’ & backdrops that you once imagined jumping out of the pages of the fairy tales you read as a child! Vineyards, apple blossoms and hills that appear to be a patchwork of squares stitched together!

About Kloster Eberbach

Kloster Eberbach is steeped in history with a long list of previous tenants and uses for the property.  Namely, it has served as a hospital, jail, sheep pen and accommodation for WWII refugees.

Things to do at Kloster Eberbach

Restaurant Klosterschänke

Once at the Klosterbach Monastery, wander the gorgeous grounds before stopping off for a bite to eat at Klosterschänke.  The restaurant has a very rustic and warm atmosphere.  And not only does the restaurant serve German cuisine but the staff greet and serve you in traditional German attire.  Also, the wonderful ‘home cooking’ on the menu is followed up with lighting quick service.

Vinotech

At the Vinothek you can taste and buy the superb wines produced by the government-owned Hessische Staatsweingüter (Hessian State Winery).

So, after lunch head over to the Vinotech for a sneaky wine tasting.  Worth noting, there are guided tours. However, we had kids in tow so did it at lightning speed, not ideal, but we weren’t leaving without tasting some of the local tipple!

Wander the extensive grounds

The premises are surrounded by forest so we wandered out one of the gates and let the boys run around. They just loved it (plenty of sticks to collect in a forest, because of course their collection at home isn’t big enough ????)

Good to know

  • If you head a little further down the Rheingau definitely pop in at Dillman Winery
  • The property is also home to a hotel where you can spend a night or two exploring the Rheingau Wineries

Knallbraun

The beautiful thing about art is it comes in all different forms. Sometimes it’s poetic, sometimes it’s deep and dark and sometimes it’s uplifting and fun! Well, I have a humorous and fun artist for you here, Knallbraun. Janice and I first became aware of this amazing artist at the last StijlMarkt. Created by Mo Freiknecht, her art is quirky and humorous with a bit of feminism thrown in. She specialises in prints, calendars, magnets and cards. Definitely check her out.

Chaika Soy Candles

There is nothing better than a delicious smelling candle. Actually, there is nothing better than a beautiful fragrance hitting your nose as you walk in through the door of your home. It makes me all tingly just thinking about it.

Now I’m not going to lie, I’ve had a hard time finding candles here in Frankfurt, especially ones from a local brand. That was, until I discovered Chaika Soy Candles. I stumbled upon them at last year’s StijlMarkt. I fell in love with their scents and the fact that they are manufactured not that far from Frankfurt in Landau/Pfalz.

What’s so special about these candles?  Well, first off, they take recycled beer bottles and turn them into their glass containers for their pure soy mixtures of high-quality phthalate-free fragrance oils. And you know what’s clever, the candle tags are matches. Yep, I thought it was great too.

Definitely, give the Whiskey scent a try, it’s my favourite!

Good to know:

  • handmade
  • vegan
  • burn for 30 hours
  • recycled beer bottles
