Frankfurt recycling and waste separation

Frankfurt recycling and waste separation

At first, it may seem like you need a PhD in order to understand Frankfurt recycling and waste separation rules!  However, with a little guidance, anyone can do and more importantly everyone MUST do it!  In essence, there are 4 bins at your disposal (see what I did there 😜) at home.  Namely Black, Blue/Green, Yellow/Orange and Brown.

Green/Blue Recycling Bins in Germany – Paper

First in line, the green and blue trash bins in Germany are for paper and cardboard.

Accepted

  • Newspapers
  • Egg Cartons
  • Magazines
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Letters and envelopes
  • Shipping cardboard (folded)
  • Books
  • Bubble envelopes

Not Accepted

  • Drink cartons → Yellow sack/bin
  • Paper towels → Black/gray bin
  • Carbon paper → Black/gray bin
  • Dirty/grease pizza boxes → Black/gray bin
  • Parchment paper → Black/gray bin
  • Photos → Black/gray bin

Brown Recycling Bins – Biodegradable (Biomüll)

Next, it’s time to get composting! If however, you are not inclined to do it yourself, the council will do it for you by way of the trusty Brown Recycling Bin.  These brown bins are designed to collect organic waste that can be composted, which is a sustainable way to manage organic materials and reduce landfill waste. It’s an eco-friendly approach.

Also, you can often head down to your local Burger Buro to pick up the paper bags free of charge.

Accepted

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Other food waste
  • Egg shells
  • Coffee grounds and coffee filters
  • Flowers
  • Yard waste (grass, leaves, trimmings, etc)

Yellow/Orange Recycling Bin/Bag – Plastic (Verpackung)

Now onto the yellow bag (Gelbersack) or yellow trash bin which is for soft metal, plastics and coated papers. All trash containers must be emptied and cleaned, dirty food containers are not allowed.

You can often head down to your local Burger Buro to pick up the yellow bags free of charge.

Accepted

  • Plastic packaging

  • Non-refundable plastic bottles
  • Condiment bottles (must be empty and clean!)
  • Yoghurt containers

  • Milk cartons
  • Aluminum foil
  • Plastic flower pots

Not Accepted

  • Dirty food containers (they must be cleaned first)

Grey/black Trash Bins – (Restmüll)

Last but definitely not least the grey/black bin.  Most household waste that does not belong in the bins mentioned above will then be disposed of in the Grey/Black trash bin.  Below we list some of the things that are accepted.  However, be aware to not overfill the trash bin or dispose of illegal items as this can lead to a fine.  If you find that you have an unusual amount of waste to dispose of you can buy black trash bins for a small fee from your local Burger Buro.  These can then be disposed of alongside your usual black bin.

  • Everything that does not fit above criteria
  • Respirators/Face Masks

Glass Recycling in Frankfurt

Dotted all around the city you will find large recycling bins where you can dispose of your glass waste.  It is divide into three categories namely white, green and brown glass.  Before depositing all your glass bottles double check that you are not entitled to Pfand ie a deposit back.

Pfand Recycling in Frankfurt

In Germany, cans and bottles (both plastic and glass) included in the Pfand system are usually marked with a special symbol.  Namely a ‘Pfand’ logo or ‘Pfand’ on the label.  The deposit amount varies depending on the type and size of the bottle but is typically around €0.08 to €0.25.  To properly recycle them and get your deposit back:

  1. Purchase beverages with a Pfand-eligible bottle.
  2. After consumption, rinse the bottle.
  3. Return it to a supermarket or store that participates in the Pfand system.
  4. Use a reverse vending machine or return it to the store’s designated collection point.
  5. You’ll receive your deposit back in cash or as a voucher, which you can use for your next purchase.

In short, this system encourages recycling and helps reduce plastic waste while also giving consumers an incentive to participate.

Viktoria Lorenz German Fashion Designer

Viktoria Lorenz: Creating Wearable Art

Amidst a world overrun with fast fashion and instant gratification, it’s rare to come across someone who values craftsmanship, quality and individuality. And it is German fashion designer, Viktoria Lorenz’s commitment to these fundamental values that sets her apart.   And it makes for a refreshing approach in today’s fast-paced industry.

Viktoria Lorenz german fashion designer

Who is Viktoria Lorenz?

Young, inspired and oodles of talent!  It’s hard to imagine me having such a clear idea of who I was, never mind what I wanted to do at such a young age.  Perhaps one might describe Viktoria as an ‘old soul’ wise beyond her years! An absolute delight to interview, she as interested in me as I in her!  Self-absorbed definitely isn’t her style.

So let us begin.  Viktoria Lorenz, the girl, was born in Wiesbaden.  However, Viktoria Lorenz, the designer, was born just outside of Chicago at the tender age of 13.  And it was from the quiet of her teenage room that Viktoria first stumbled upon RAF Simons.  Moreover, his first collection for Dior.  And it was that collection that bewitched a young Viktoria and set her on a path she has walked ever since.  She would go on to spend endless days and nights meticulously researching not only the origins, collections and designers of Dior but also each of the iconic fashion houses.  Namely, Chanel, Alaïa, Givenchy, Valentino the list goes on and on.

At first, drawing did not come naturally to her.  But never one to be put off by challenge she dedicated hours to mastering the art. With each stroke of the pencil, she honed her craft and developed her own unique style allowing her to bring her own designs to life.

Viktoria approached her studies with the same 360° and fully immersive approach as her early days researching every aspect of the fashion industry.  Choosing both a formal education at the Fashion School in Mannheim as well as a hands-on approach apprenticing with her most trusted seamstress.  Learning the intricacies of transforming and manipulating a piece of fabric into visions she could once only hold in her head. Undoubtedly, this deeper understanding contributes to her ability to design with a higher level of skill and creativity.

Collaborations and Fashion Shows

Bringing a fashion collection and fashion show to fruition is no small feat.  Hours and hours of hard work, dedication, and creativity are just for starters.  Next, add a little luck and plenty of guts. Finally but most importantly a concept and perhaps a muse.  Viktoria Lorenz found both in ZERO!

She first came across ZERO on a trip to the Guggenheim Museum in New York with her mother.  ZERO is an art movement that was started in Düsseldorf by the group of German artists Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, and Günther Uecker.  Pioneers and very active in the 50’s and 60’s they galvanised artists and movements all across Europe.  Today they have a foundation that exhibits and supports causes close to their hearts.

Viktoria and her approach piqued their interest.  And so it was that they came together to help her exhibit her very first 12-piece collection and fashion show.

Furthermore, her pieces have been seen on the likes of Ava Max, Alessia Cara, Griff’s dancers and our very own Wiesbaden Celebrity Hair Stylist Alex Von Trentini.

Viktoria Lorenz Design Process

Creating Wearable Art!

For many this statement may conjure up garish and outrageous pieces you may only find on the runways of Paris and Milan her process is far more subtle and nuanced.  And whilst, her primary objective is to craft extraordinary pieces!  Her goal too is that they be versatile enough to not only be dressed up or down but also worn multiple times.

The German Fashion Designer loves to play with and manipulate fabrics creating not only 3 dimensional aspects to the pieces but rather a full 360° aesthetic.  Each angle offers the viewer something new to admire and appreciate.

Undoubtedly Viktoria’s passion for fashion extends beyond the surface. And she aspires to create clothing with profound meaning, connecting fashion to deeper topics and causes. Her thoughtful approach makes her more than just a fashion designer they make her deeply human.

Where can you buy your piece of wearable art?

If you are not sure where to start?  Accessories, like the Viktoria Lorenz statement backpacks, are a great entry point.  They are perfect for anyone looking to express their style, even those who might be a little more fashion-shy. They offer a versatile way to add a touch of individuality to an outfit.

Otherwise, get in touch directly and head over to her beautiful atelier and find the perfect piece for you.  Viktoria loves the close connection that develops with her clients as they come together to create something that fits seamlessly and makes them feel extraordinary.

Everything is made to order.

“By being natural and sincere, one often can create revolutions without having sought them.” Christian Dior

Playground

Best Playgrounds in Frankfurt for Kids

Something Frankfurt has a relatively good percentage of, is green space!  And within this 144 squared kilometres of lushness you are sure to find a safe space for your little humans to run around like lunatics!  When putting together our list of best playgrounds in Frankfurt we decided that there needed to be some aspect to if not entertain the adults, at least caffeinate them!  However, as we all know it’s not a perfect world and thus playgrounds without coffee and food options have been noted.

Sachsenhausen Playground at Goetheturm

Since arriving in 2018 this has been a family favourite of ours!  Not only is there the park but it also backs on the forest where you can ride bikes, build log hideaways and not worry about taking snacks because the restaurant is great!  Also, take a minute to climb Goetheturm and get a phenomenal view over the city!  Also, the playground was recently given a little make over improving the water play section and maze area!

Good to know:  Schmidt_Peccolo am Goetheturm Restaurant serves up traditional german cuisine as well as ice cream and coffee.  Also, they have a take away window so you don’t need to be seated.
Where to find it:  Goetheturm Playground Location

Drachenburg (Spielplatz)

This playgrounds sits in the heart of Frankfurt and made the list not only because it sits right next to our favourite trinkhalle Fein. But because you you can kill two birds with one stone meaning two play dates in one!  Little humans get a play date and mummy/daddy does too!   Now before you judge us, alongside a good Aperol spritz they also serve great coffee and cakes!

Good to know:  the playground is set in a giant sandpit
Where to find it:  Drachenburg Location

Günthersburgpark Kinderspielplatz

Come summer or winter Günthersburgpark and playground is an absolute ‘must know’ for all parents who want to remain sane!  Without a doubt the water slide during the summer months is a popular activity and it provides not only fun but also the opportunity for kids to learn patience!  As well as the water activities there are plenty of other things to do.  Namely the playground with slides, swings, sandpits, basketball court and a football pitch which is literally anywhere and everywhere!

Good to know: There is a Kiosk providing the necessary caffeine, alcoholic beverage and emergency snack when the picnic is devoured 30 seconds after arrival.
Where to find it:  Günthersburgpark Location

Heinrich-Kraft-Park Playground

The zip line and a huge fort like structure at the centre had my kids screeching with delight!  Further a field you’ll also find space to play football, basketball and a small skate park section.

Good to know:  take your own caffeine and SNACKS
Where to find it:  Heinrich-Kraft-Park Location

Spielplatz im Ostpark

Ostpark is a green oasis in the surprise surprise East of the city!  And along with having two playgrounds, one for younger kids and one for older kids it also has a great skate park.  However, we advise little ones only use the skate area early in the day with supervision.  Furthermore the park itself is characterised by the Riedgraben lake which is great for watching the geese and bird life and various other sports facilities, including football and basketball pitches.

Good to know:  there is a kiosk southeast of the pond otherwise check out Aniis, Oosten
Where to find it:  Ostpark spielplatz older kids location ; Ostpark for the younger kids

Palmengarten

Firstly we feel it’s important to mention that entry is not free, however, in our opinion it is still definitely worth the visit.  And each season brings something new!  During the summer months take advantage of the sprinkler play area, in the winter head for the hot house or see winter light show.  And all year round feel free to row a boat, take a ride on the Palmengarten express, try your hand at a round of mini golf or simply just wander the glorious gardens!  One thing is for sure there is plenty to keep little hands and feet busy and plenty to learn.

Good to know:  Palmengarten Entry Fees
Where to find it:  Palmengarten Location

Palmengarten

Waldspielpark Schwanheim

This is such a cute playground for kids on the lower age spectrum!  Also if your kids are into dinosaurs then this is an absolute must!  With many of the climbing frames and obstacles dinosaur themed!  Also, during the summer months it has a sprinkler or splash area for kids to enjoy.  Also, not far from the park you’ll find  Struwwelpeter Baum which is great fun for the kids to see

Good to know:  take your own caffeine and SNACKS
Where to find it:  Waldspielpark Schwanheim Location

Playground
Struwwelpeter

Grüneburgpark Playground

In the heart of Westend lies this enormous open space just inviting you to in!  Also there are 3 small playgrounds throughout the park making them accessible from which ever way you enter.  However, if you are after a coffee you going to want to head across to the Palmengarten side entrance where you’ll find a small independent mobile coffee bar!

Good to know: Brewdis Mobile Kaffeebar serves great coffee starting at 10am on the Palmengarten Side

Best Restaurants in Frankfurt

Best Restaurants in Frankfurt

Undoubtedly, something we won’t take for granted after COVID-19 is the privilege and pleasure of dining out!  Of course, like a seasonal menu, the palette is subject to change and therefore, so too are the best restaurants in Frankfurt.  However, we have tried to put together as a varied a list of restaurants so as to ensure that hopefully everyone will find something to tickle their fancy!

To make it a little easier, we’ve subdivided the list by region/cuisine.

SUSHI

Walk up to Moriki, and you find two giant stone lions guarding the door and the Deutsche Bank towers rise up above you like giant mirrors.  In addition to this, the interiors are understated but no less impressive.  Lunch times are often packed as bankers and business colleagues hash over whatever needs hashing whilst indulging in sublimely fresh sushi and other Japanese dishes!

Finally, Ruinart is the ‘by the glass’ choice of champagne!  So, regardless of the time of day there is always occasion for a glass of bubbles even if only the one glass!

With a slightly misleading name as they serve neither burgers nor street food in a traditional sense.  Without a doubt though, they are a small space that make a big statement!  The sushi passing across from the kitchen is sublime and the restaurant does a phenomenal job with the traditional and fusion mix.  Undoubtedly too, their sushi platters are taken to the next level as puffs of liquid nitrogen magnify the wow factor exponentially!  Admittedly, lunch time can be busy and crowed so get there early!

Shisan is family run and incredibly welcoming!  As well as that they have a fairly extensive menu and chef who is always open to special requests!

ITALIAN

Friday night is pizza night in our house and when we not making it at home, cosy Friday nights at Papanova’s is one of our go tos!  Relaxed and very family friend means parents get a chance to go out without leaving the kids at home!

Super Bro’s serve SUPER PIZZA 😜. No no, in all seriousness this guys absolutely know what they are doing!!  Without a doubt serving up the best authentic Napoli style pizzas this side of Napoli!  Now, making pizza is one thing making exceptional pizza is quite another!

So how do they do it?  For one thing, the dough is the foundation that everything rests on! With this in mind it is allowed to ferment for 24 to 48 hours. After that, the best fresh ingredients.  And finally it’s up to the oven! Stefano Ferrara is where it’s at, it’s heated to almost 500 degrees, and the pizza is ready in just 60 to 90 seconds.

Last but not least, it’s worth mentioning, the decor is on point!

GERMAN

If old fashioned love stories and glorious views of the the Frankfurt skyline along with great food are your thing then a stop at Gerbermühle are a must!  Said to be the site where fabled German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe met his Marianne and gave her his heart.  Set along the south side of the main river it offers a different view of the skyline that you might be used to.

Along with the history and skyline they offer both casual and formal dining options!

Restaurant

In case a more formal setting and menu is what you after, the Gerbermühle restaurant and terrace is where it’s at.  Jörg Ludwig and his team will delight you with sensational creations mixing traditional values with modern taste.  Also, popular German and Frankfurt specialities will be found on the menus

Private Dining

There is something for everyone at Gerbermühle including a private dining experience for those wanting the ultimate intimate setting.

STEAKHOUSE

Just off Kaiserhofstraße down a side alley you find Buffalo, an Argentinian Steak house!  Now this, is what we call a steak house! Where your knife almost slices through like butter, it’s perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection!  Also, unless you order sides you get only a steak on your plate! LOVE!!  They truly know their business and how to hero their key ingredient…the beef!

Service is wonderfully quick (thank goodness as we had two little terrors in tow!). Also, if you want to avoid disappointment booking is essential! We went on a Saturday at lunch and there was not a table to be had!

One final note, they do a great value kids meal of steak and chips

If you looking for a little atmosphere and a great steak on a Friday night VAIVAI is where it’s at!

Of course they serve great steak any day of the week but Friday’s tend to be particularly festive (booking is advisable!) – get there a little early and enjoy a drink at the bar!

The staff are superb and incredibly friendly with great recommendations, the cocktails aren’t half bad either (the pornstar martini heavenly in fact!)

In their own words.  “Steaks and fish from the grill, antipasti, pasta and a fine selection of wines in a modern ambience with urban-industrial decor, lounge area for groups, meetings, celebrations, events, kick-offs, trade fairs, event locations, bar and DJ.”

BURGERS

No mess no fuss and they have a fantastic kids option!  Quality meat and homemade sauces are two attributes that they pride themselves on!  Also, they have two premises one on Oeder Weg which is the perfect spot for a burger before or after a movie and one in Bahnhofsviertel.  Minimalistic decor and friendly staff round off der Fette Bulle experience.

Why not just combine a park with a restaurant?  This was the beginning and the inspiration for what we now know as Jamy’s Burgers!  Of course, a burger is only as good as it’s ingredients and thus the quality of meat, vegetables and the all important bread is fundamental to the burger that gets placed in front of you!  So expect, fresh from the market daily, free of additives and seasonal and made onsite daily!  Furthermore, the Angus beef comes exclusively from the Landmetzgerei Mehl.

Importantly too for anyone with vegans in their party Jamy’s has options.  Not only the fries (Classic Fries or Sweet Potato Fries) but they also have a falafel guacamole burger.

American BBQ

Nothing screams red, white and blue cuisine quite like American BBQ!  Namely, meat slathered in spices and slow cooked over a log fire! With American BBQ on offer, expect nothing less than relaxed Southern Charm.  Animal clad waiters cruise around the room serving trays laden with meat so tender it can’t help but fall from the bone.  To complete the look and feel drinks are served in chilled marbelesque beer mugs.

Also, do yourself a favour and stop by for the Chicago Williams boozy brunch.

FINE DINING

Atop the new old Henninger Turm sits the spectacular panoramic view restaurant FranziskaWith floor to ceiling windows it is hard not be hypnotised by the twinkling lights that head out far into the distance.

Defining themselves as serving ’Progressive German Vintage Cuisine’ inspired by the recipes of the great-aunt of Christian Mook, founder of the Mook Group.  These inspired dishes come to life in their incredible show kitchen and you welcome to watch if you can pull your eyes away from the view.

Barrel Bar

Without a doubt you bound to be impressed by the bar team and their creations!  And with centrifuges, dehydrators, sous-vide cookers, liquid nitrogen and special maceration processes to produce their own aromatic foams, syrups, dried fruit and flavour infusions in the specially equipped bar laboratory it should come as no surprise!

Oben Restaurant and Skybar gives you a perfect view of Frankfurt’s unique and beautiful skyline as it sits perfectly nestled high up amongst the soaring rooftops.  With undeniably breathtaking views over the city and the vibrant Mediterranean colours and flavour it makes for a visual feast both on an off the plate.

Also, Oben Restaurant and Skybar is the brainchild of the incredible and very well know Spanish chef, Iñigo Urrechu.  Furthermore it  marks Urrechu’s first venture outside of Spain!

ASIAN

In the Innerstadt, a stones throw away from Goetheplatz lies Madame Mei where they serve Cantonese food at its best.

The name Madame Mei literally conjures up images in my mind of a bygone era of prohibition & mystery! And, my imagination continues to be indulged as we pull back a heavy set of red curtains to enter a ‘little space in Shanghai’, as we walk in glorious aromas assault my senses and I am instantly starving!

The decor is tastefully done adding to the feel and ambience of the restaurant, whilst we were here only for lunch I can imagine this being wonderful for an intimate dinner!

Starting with Wanton soup was the perfect way to warm up after coming in from the cold, we followed this up with a variety of dim sum which were fresh and flavour filled, the spices coming through beautifully in each mouthful! We washed it all down with a cup of their Oolong tea….yum (and as an added bonus our waiter happily topped up our tea cups for round 2)

The name “Thong” means “gold” so there is no guessing why they went with this for their name.  An institution in  Frankfurt, for fifteen years Thong Thai has been delivering fresh Thai food!

Along with the speed of preparation you can be delighted with the live cooking i.e. the opportunity to watch the food being prepared.

Finally they have 4 properties to choose from so you bound to find one near you!

Sonamu “Casual Korean Dining”

Wood clad from floor to ceiling with pops of red punctuating the space in the form of chairs and napkins!  Often describe by some to not be authentic enough the owners are as authentic as they come. The menu includes classic Korean dishes such as bulgogi and bibimbab in various variations

PERUVIAN

PASSION!  Undoubtedly this is what drives through everything you find at La Cevi!  Without a doubt they also have one of the most unique stories to go along with it.

As the story goes… owner Daniel Nawenstein waved goodbye to South America after spending a year there to find his culinary way around Peru and little did he know it would change the course of his life. Firstly he’d fallen in love with ceviche and secondly with a woman named Heidi. Three years later they were married and had the idea to bring Peruvian cuisine to Germany. As fate would have they met a chef by the name of Diego on a trip to Lima, from there, the three of them have created a Peruvian haven right in the middle of Frankfurt. So for an incredible experience and a taste of Peru we definitely recommend this little beauty.

Not more than a stones throw away from the towering Deutsche Bank buildings lies AMAN.  Serving up modern Indian cuisine in a refreshingly modern setting!  A large wooden bar, drop lighting and a mixture of seating arrangements makes for a potentially new experience each visit!  Particularly, if you sample something new from the menu each time.  I had a firm taste of nostalgia from my days living in India while eating the Palak paneer.   It was a real favourite of mine when I lived there!  Also, don’t miss out on the specialities that come out their Tandoor oven or the bottles that come out their ‘cellar’😉.  AMAN boasts a fairly extensive wine menu to accompany any dish that tickles your fancy!

MEXICAN

Undoubtedly a bit of a Mexican institution here in Frankfurt.  Unbelievably they have delighting their customers since 1983!!

Colour and flair are two things El Pacifico has no shortage of!!  Also portions are big so definitely go with armed with your appetite!

For all those tequila lovers out there, their menu is extensive allowing you to indulge all the the agave plant has to offer!  And of course what’s Mexican without a good Margherita!!

Authentic Mexican Taco’s!!  And when we say authentic we mean TAQUERIA “La Original” original Mexican flavours think nopales, tomatillos and a variety of peppers.  Moreover, their tortillas are freshly made and pressed in-house every day!  Also, they have two versions of tortilla, corn and wheat.  The tortilla that is chosen is more than a vehicle for transporting the filling to your mouth, but rather it is there to hero the fresh ingredients and filling!

For instance the corn tortilla has a distinctive flavour, is more corse and ‘durable’ (for want of a better word) than the wheat flour tortilla. And therefore pairs perfectly with the richly marinated chicken and brisket options.  Meaning the juices can sink in slowly and soften the tortilla without it completely disintegrating in your hand as you eat.  On the other hand, the crispy fish taco is served on the more subtle and softer wheat flour tortilla.

Without a doubt the Tequila and margaritas are another massive plus!!!  TAQUERIA “La Original” is home to the biggest Tequila collection in Frankfurt!  So, for the hungry and for the thirsty there is plenty to keep you smiling!!

EUROPEAN

Yaldy the brain child of Michele Heinrich and Andrei Lipan.  Overall their focus is on quality seasonal and local ingredients.  So, expect an ever changing menu which is always fresh and exciting.  In addition to the flare they add to their dishes  is the passion that they incorporate into the wine selection.  Andrei is the wine connoisseur and he is always to hand in ensure that you choose the right wine to accompany your meal.

Now if you still need convincing as to whether you should visit they have a final string to add to their bow, COCKTAILS.  Long before the dream of Yaldy began Michele was making a name for himself in the mixology world as a well know face in the renowned Kinley Bar team.  During the pandemic they also took to creating a new brand and concept, Ciccione, which was focussed on authentic Italian pizza…stay tuned!

Ask the two what Yaldy is about and they quoted as saying “It should be a bar for everyone!”

Margarete is gorgeous ‘little’ gem tucked away on Braubachstraße and only a hop skip and a jump from the Altstadt!  And in short it is cleverly divided into two spaces each perfected designed to accentuate their personality!  Walk in off Braubachstraße and you’ll find yourself in the bistro.  Laid back table settings an industrial washed concrete bar with honey coloured wooden worktop extending the length of the room!

If however you continue walking through to the back end you will find the restaurant.  And here you find a more refined dining experience with a patio that extends out into the quiet square behind.  Also, the space can be cleverly divided by large heavy linen curtains to create intimate locations for private events.

Finally Margarete is a household name when it comes to one of the best brunches in town!  Be sure however to make a reservation so that you don’t miss out !!

Best rooftop bars in Frankfurt

Best rooftop bars in Frankfurt

Not many things beat a rooftop bar when the sky is blue and the weather glorious!!  And if the cocktails don’t get you a little lightheaded then the thin air high up in the rooftops is sure to😜!  Another important aspect in our opinion for a  rooftop bar is a great view, the neighbours bedroom is just not going to cut it.  So, without further a do here are our list of great rooftop bars for your your visiting pleasure!!

NFT SKYBAR

NFT Skybar currently holds the title for highest rooftop bar in Germany!  And having to equalise your ears as you reach the 47th floor it’s impossible not to notice the change in altitude!  With an epic 360-degree view of Frankfurt it’s worth an visit even if only for the view.  Having said that, we highly recommend a sneaky cocktail because what’s a rooftop visit without something to toast it.  What’s more, NFT SKYBAR take cocktails to a whole new level!  With Artist David Zucker having created a collection of digital artworks inspired by the rooftop bar’s signature cocktails.

The bar itself runs half the length of the room with the restaurant section wrapping around to one side creating an L shaped space.  Moving outside is an impressive wraparound terrace which is enclosed by (we’re guessing) 4+ meter high glass walls allowing you an almost immersive experience with the view.

Opening Hours:

Tues to Sat: 6pm – 1am

Good to know:
  • It’s situated in nhow Frankfurt a stone throw away from Skyline Plaza

OBEN

Oben Restaurant and Skybar gives you a view of Frankfurt’s unique and beautiful skyline. It sits perfectly nestled high up amongst the rooftops in Frankfurts Westend.  With vibrant Mediterranean colours and flavour it makes for a visual feast both on an off the plate.  Importantly and absolutely worth noting is that Oben forms part of the impressive portfolio of Iñigo Urrechu.

Opening Hours:

Tues to Sat:  6pm – 12am
Sun and Mon:  Closed

CITY BEACH

Walking through the Konstabler parkhaus you may think you’ve been sent on some sort of wild goose chase!  However, I can assure you this is not the case!  Persevere, keep walking, and a piece of tropical magic in the centre of Frankfurt awaits you.  Undoubtedly it’s as though you’ve walked through a gateway portal into a parallel universe.

The rooftop bar is cleverly ‘divided’ into sections with each section providing something different. 2 pools (ok the term pool is used very loosely here as the water only goes as high as your knee) and giant pink flamingos lazily bob up and down as the breeze gently nudges them along. Blue and purple cushions flank the pool offering a comfortable seat as you sit and dip your toes into the aquamarine water, complete the idyllic scene with a cocktail!

If admiring the iconic Dom Romer is your pleasure, grab a deck chair, dig your toes deep into the white sand and watch as the clouds float by behind the gothic cathedral spire.

Hungry?  Move across to the table and chairs and peruse their food menu.

Opening Hours:
  • Mon to Thurs:  12pm – 11pm
  • Friday:  12pm – 12am
  • Sat:  11am – 12am
  • Sun:  11am – 11pm

Good to know:
  • City Beach website
  • As the entire site is outdoor their opening is weather dependent, thus, it’s prudent to check their website which gives you the latest before heading over

LILY’S BAR

Perched high up above Alte Oper in the Sofitel hotel lies Lili’s bar!  The rooftop space is small, intimate and offers a phenomenal view particularly lovely as the sun sets!  However, it is a fairly small space so large groups of friends are perhaps better choosing form some of the larger rooftop bars.  Also, its prime real estate so be prepared to have the prices reflect this!

Opening Hours:

Daily:  12pm – 11pm

Good to know:

CHICAGO ROOF ROOFTOP BAR

Nestled high up on the Gekko House rooftop lies Chicago Roof Rooftop Bar!  Decking and a large foliage wall are just some of the features helping create the gorgeous contrast against the Frankfurt skyline!  Whether you begin an evening with sundowners on the rooftop and then head down for some traditional American BBQ in Chicago Williams or vice versa is entirely up to you!  Also, feel free to skip dinner and just enjoy the rooftop vibes.

Opening Hours:
  • Mon to Friday:  5pm – 10pm
  • Sat and Sun:  2pm – 10pm

Good to know:

BAR MARMION

Bar Marmion is unlike your usual hotel bars which can often be sterile and lacking in personality!  Perched high up on the 5th floor of the Lindley Hotel the bar oozes old school glamour and charm.  A winding staircase take you up a level to the open rooftop where you look out across the city breath in the ‘Ostend’ vibes!  Furthermore, the bar is an extension of the two resident barmen/operators Malwin Hillier and Torsten Martini and thus you are guaranteed that night out here will always be anything but dull!  Best bit, if you up for an all nighter and literally want to fall into bed, book a room and your wish is Lindleys command!

Opening Hours:
  • Mon to Thurs:  5pm – 1am
  • Fri and Sat:  5pm – 2am
  • Sun:  Closed

Good to know:

So there you have it!  Plenty of options to get out and see Frankfurts gorgeous skyline from all sides.  And if you prefer your views closer to the ground then check out our favourite beer gardens in and around Frankfurt.

Best Cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt

Top Cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt

So, for all the utter hell COVID put us through, perhaps one positive to come out of it is a more relaxed view of remote working.  Another thing I learned during COVID-19 is that only one spouse should be home at any particular time working remotely 😜. Meaning, if both of you are home you might want to check out some of the top cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt listed below!

The criteria we judged the Top Cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt

  1. easy access to WI-FI (duh)
  2. space – nothing worse than a ‘side eye’ from the manager encouraging you in a not-so-subtle way to leave so they can have the table
  3. good coffee – imperative in our opinion for Best Cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt

Copper Bay Superfood and Coffee

Here’s why we think Copper Bay is an excellent choice for working remotely in Frankfurt:

  • Firstly, they don’t pressure you into drinking more coffee than you like – your beverage preferences don’t affect your eligibility to work there.
  • Secondly, the cafe is fully digitalised.  So you can control your level of interaction with the staff. You can use the app to submit your order through a QR code on your table if you prefer to be left alone.
  • Lastly, because we can’t yet move things with our minds, the staff will bring your order right to your table.  And if you need any recommendations or assistance, they’re more than happy to provide it.

We love:   Pesto Rosso toast with goat cheese and walnuts (add an egg for good measure 😉)

Where to find them:  Copper Bay Location

Concept cafe

Die Grüne Kaffeebohne

Along the bustling Hanaulandstraße lies another cafe worth exploring – Die Grüne Kaffeebohne.  It is a relatively new cafe to the Frankfurt coffee scene and worth a visit.  Particularly lovely is a large attention-grabbing mural of Wangari Muta Maathai. A woman who was just as attention-grabbing with her extensive activist work, inspiring millions of women and planting just as many trees!

We love:  my boys absolutely love the raw peanut bar.

Where to find them:  Die Grune Kaffeebohne Location

Rich Barista

Rich Barista is located in the lobby of nhow Frankfurt Hotel next to Skyline Plaza.  What we love about working from here is that whilst it can get pretty busy at lunch, often it’s low-key and relaxed.  Also, they have a varied lunch menu, a different dish for each day, freshly made on-site!

Finally, if you are a sweet cakes fan, you must try them here!  Because the word has it, the GM is a massive lover of all things sweet!  Meaning, that their freshly made pastries and cakes are absolutely ON POINT!

We love:  the lentil soup served on Thursdays is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS.

Where to find them:  Rich Barista Location

Stacks

Stacks now stand where Bohnerie once stood!  But if you were a fan of the previous owners, don’t worry because the new owners seem just as cool!  Importantly, though, they do bring their own flavour and spin!  Briefly, two brothers combine their two passions, coffee and music, aka barista and DJ!  Without a doubt, MUSIC is a big focus here! And spontaneity is their vibe!

It’s a split-level cafe, which in itself is unique here in Frankfurt. The interior is relaxed and casual.  Downstairs, simple wooden tables are dotted around, with a large bar and stools at the window.  A staircase spirals up to the second level, where an enormous wooden table commands the space.  And it’s perfect for working or for large group gatherings.

Good to know:  as mentioned, music is a big focus!  So, working here early in the morning is best, as things can get festive!

We love:  the vibe!

Where to find them:  Stacks Location

Best cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt

Cafe Under Pressure

Another of our Top Cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt sits on the quieter side of Sachsenhausen.  Undoubtedly, every aspect of this coffee haven is made with love, and Cafe Under Pressure is a true hidden gem. It should be noted that the entire interior was built by the owner Sven himself.  To sum up, he has left no detail to chance and in our opinion it’s perfect!

We love:  the banana bread.

Where to find them:  Cafe Under Pressure Location

Kaffeemacherei

First and foremost, Kaffeemacherei is a fully vegan cafe situated in Nordend.  And what began as a small, intimate cafe on Eckenheimer Landstraße has blossomed into an expansive space on Bornwiesenweg!  Unquestionably, Golnaz has gone from strength to strength with her incredible vision!

Good to know:  fully vegan

Where to find them:  Kaffeemacherei Location

So there you have it!  Our top cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt!

BEER GARDENS and rooftop bars

BEER GARDENS in Frankfurt

Not many things beat a relaxed beer garden when the weather is glorious!!  Now, if beer and gardens aren’t your thing and you prefer your lightheadedness from free-flowing cocktails and the thin air 😜 high up on the rooftops!  Then, we have just the thing for you!  So, without further ado here is our list of great beer gardens for your visiting pleasure!!

BRAUSTIL – Beer garden

Locally brewed beer, you can’t get much better than that!  BrauStil, located on Oeder Weg, is a local brewery specialising in handcrafted beers from start to finish.

In particular, Braustil prides itself on producing top-notch, craft-style beers. With a focus on traditional brewing techniques and locally sourced ingredients, it’s no surprise that the brewery has developed a reputation for excellence in the industry. Also, their diverse beer selection includes lagers, ales, and seasonal brews, catering to a wide range of tastes. It’s a popular destination for beer enthusiasts and locals alike, eager to sample the best of Frankfurt’s craft beer scene. If you’re seeking authentic, locally brewed beer in the city, Braustil is a must-visit spot.

Opening Hours:

  • Tues-Friday:  4pm – 10pm
  • Sat:  12pm – 10pm
  • Sun:  2pm – 9pm

Good to know:

Lohrberg-Schänke

Lohrberg-Schänke is a popular beer garden located on Lohrberg Hill in Frankfurt. It offers stunning panoramic views of the city’s skyline, making it a picturesque spot for enjoying traditional German beers and local food.  If you’re after a tranquil and refreshing beer garden experience, look no further than this hidden gem in Frankfurt.

NIDDASTRAND – Beer garden

What an absolute little oasis (ok, minus the water 😬). Undoubtedly, though, the sand between your toes and the green polo fields across the way make up for the lack of sea!  Deck chairs, large umbrellas and a designated kids area mean that parents can sit back, relax and enjoy the beer on tap.  In case you are hungry, the ‘brot und wurtz’ coming off the BBQ keeps growling tummies at bay.  All in all, it makes for an outstanding day out!

Also, having mentioned the polo fields above, if you are interested in watching a game, check out Frankfurt Polo Club for their tournament timetable!

Lastly, be aware this spot is seasonal and only open in the Summer.

Opening Hours:

  • Daily 11am – 12am

Good to know:

  • Niddastrand website
  • It’s easily accessible when cycling along the Nidda River
  • A designated section in the sand for kids with plenty of sand toys available

NAIV – Beer garden

They specialise in craft beer!  And they have a bazillion to choose from!  Just kidding,  they have around 50 varieties from around the world and three in-house brews!  Without a doubt, there is a beer to satisfy most palettes, and if not well, there is always wine!

Also, there is an impressive list of tastings to choose from, such as beer and cheese (here we thought only cheese paired with wine ????), beer vs wine with cheese tasting, and whiskey and gin!  The list goes on and on and left our heads reeling at the sheer number of choices available to taste.  Undoubtedly, naiv tastings are anything but boring!

Not to be outdone by the impressive variety of beer ‘on tap’, the restaurant serves up a mean dish in a relaxed environment!

Opening Hours:

  • Mon – Friday: 4pm–1am
  • Sat and Sun:  12pm–1am

Good to know:

SCHIFFSMELDESTELLE (SMS) – Beer garden

On the Höchst bank of the Main lies this glorious little spot!  Nicknamed SMS by those who love it, you need only be there a few moments to be fully sold on why you stopped!  Once upon a time, the location served as the registration location for passing ships; now, it serves only to make you smile, enjoy the weather and place a suitable beverage in your hand!  The “Hessian Côte d’Azur”, as named by owners Frank Wellert and his wife Lizza, is helped along with large white umbrellas, deck chairs and chilled music playing from the speakers.

Opening Hours:

  • Mon – Friday:  3pm – 10pm
  • Sat and Sun:  12pm – 10pm

GERBERMÜHLE

I considered leaving Gerbermühle off the list because, as a result of COVID-19, they have closed the beer garden and instead extended their a la carte menu.  However, the location and setting are just fabulous and still well worth a visit in the relaxed garden setting!

Undoubtedly, it is still a perfect ‘pit stop’ for those taking a stroll or a cycle along the river main.  Indulge yourself in Frankfurt classics like ‘Appelwoi’ and ‚Handkäs‘ before continuing on your journey, or simply don’t, continue on your journey we mean.

Said to be the site where the fabled German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe met his Marianne and gave her his heart.  Set along the south side of the main river, it offers a different view of the skyline than you might be used to.

Opening Hours:

Lunch
Daily 12:00 pm–5:00 pm
Dinner
Daily 5:00 pm–10:00 pm

Good to know:

  • Gerbermühle website
  • The terraces during the summer months are sublime
  • there is parking onsite (60 spaces available)

Alex von Trentini

Alex von Trentini Hair Salon

Few relationships in life require more trust than the one with your hairdresser!  So finding a good one is worth its weight in gold!  And finding one with a more impressive CV and barrage of clients than Alex von Trentini is rare.  However, what makes Alex von Trentini hair salon worth the visit, is that it is about more than just one man Alex von Trentini!  It’s about the team he has built around him!  And the service they provide!

The Story Behind Alex von Trentini Hair Salon

In short, hairdressing runs through his veins (and his family’s).  He’s from a hairdressing family he tells me!  His father is a hairdresser and so too is his brother.  Read the full story and interview.

The Vibe

Relaxed and unpretentious!

In our opinion, the reception area welcomes you with a subtle nod to the Op Art Era.  Thick striped black and white wallpaper contrasting with geometric-shaped patterned upholstery and soft furnishings.  A glass and chrome coffee table plays host to perfectly laid-out magazines and books to flick through as you sit sipping your welcome tea.

The monochromatic theme continues throughout the salon creating clean lines and a modern feel.  Each hairdresser has their own personal wooden cart which stores their essentials and favourite tools of the trade.  These are wheeled around the salon as needed before standing to attention like little wooden soldiers.

The salon space is large but very cleverly divided into three sections. A reception area, a main cutting area and finally a slightly smaller wash and additional seating area.  Meaning when you visit you are not lost in a cavernous space that feels impersonal or production line’esc. Furthermore, the salon has a private room specifically set up for those who wish to sit away from prying eyes or just prefer a little additional privacy and quiet.

The Team at Alex von Trentini Hair Salon

ATTENTIVE!

A team is only as strong as its weakest link!  And as far as I could see there wasn’t one.  In fact, what really struck me was the eclectic mix of personalities each bringing with them their specific strengths and character.  There is no cookie-cutter effect with the staff Alex von Trentini chooses to employ.  The staff are from different parts of the country, different ages, different work backgrounds and different personalities.  What is plain to see is the team and how it functions together as a whole is important when you are invited in to join the fold.  Laughter and genuine friendship seem to fill the hair salon with mentoring and camaraderie being the norm.

Alex von Trentini himself only rarely takes new clients these days.  Unfortunately with his schedule so busy he relies more and more on his team!  But as mentioned above the team is more than up to the job!  Continuous professional training and development of the team happen every month so they are always up to speed on trends and the latest techniques.

The Service

Undoubtedly it’s about more than just getting your hair done!  In fact, it’s an experiential service from the welcome tea on arrival to hand scrub as you sit in your treatment chair to the scalp massage.  UTTER BLISS!  Together with their product partner La Biosthetique, they take you through a 10-step beauty process. Alex von Trentini

Alex von Trentini, the man behind the scissors

Recently I had the absolute pleasure to sit down and interview Alex von Trentini!

I set off from Frankfurt with time to spare and then some! But of course, road works and road closures play havoc with timing and next thing you know I’m running down Bahnhofstraße in heels like a complete lunatic!  Breathing heavily, my heart pounding out of my chest and completely flustered I enter the Salon.  However I am greeted by the widest grin from Andreas the salon manager, and immediately my heart rate begins to settle.  Over the next few hours that same initial sense of warmth and openness resurfaces again and again regardless of the member of staff I am interacting with.

After arriving I am seated in reception and offered a welcome tea.  Step 1 in a very well-thought-out customer experience.  And this gives me just about enough time to compose myself before meeting the man of the hour!

First Impressions, Alex von Trentini

Alex von Trentini!  Twice named best salon in Germany.  His work has featured in Vogue, Gala and Cosmo to name but a few.  He has a celebrity client list to make anyone swoon.  And whilst you might expect to find an air of arrogance or pretentiousness about him there is absolutely none of this.  Instead, he comes bounding around the corner with the broadest smile on his face. And immediately I get a sense of why he has achieved all that he has.  He is relaxed, and down to earth but exceptionally self-assured and an absolute delight to interview.  Over the next hour, I get to know a little more about the man behind the scissors.

Alex von Trentini

So where exactly does a man of his success begin his journey?

In short, hairdressing runs through his veins (and his family’s).  He’s from a hairdressing family he tells me!  His father is a hairdresser and so too is his brother.  He laughs as he goes on to say that focus wasn’t a big priority for him at school.  And so with the encouragement of his father, he left school early to begin his apprenticeship and hairdresser training. A decision that would prove itself the right decision again and again.

Newly ‘unshackled’ he fully embraced life and all it had to offer.  This is to say it took him a little time to realise and fully appreciate the incredible talent he had.  However, a ‘close call’ in his final assessment at hair school gave him all the insight he needed.  In short, his style created a very polarising opinion amongst his examiners.  One called him brilliant the other terrible.  The difference between success and failure is so subjective.  Moreover, he realised that whilst he had scored an almost unheard-of full points for both women’s and men’s haircuts it could have gone either way.  Talent he had in droves!  Because let’s face it average is never polarising!

And from that moment on he seized each and every opportunity life gave him.  Undoubtedly the initial seeds for Alex Von Trentini as we see him today were sown.

Tell us the story behind Alex von Trentini Salon?

After his graduation his talent did not go unnoticed and he was recruited to teach at his hair training college.  He did this for a few years whilst simultaneously working to learn all aspects of what it takes to run a business and salon.  Finally, at age 30 he decided it was time for the next step.  Meaning it was time for him to run his own show!  Serendipitous events led to finding a location and the lease being signed before the contract was even cold off the press.

Next, the location was completely gutted and in its place stood his vision!  And in 2012 Alex Von Trentini the Salon opened its doors for the first time.

What and who inspires you?

No one thing or one person inspires Alex.  Instead, he draws inspiration from everywhere and everything!  From his travels, to nature, to the online world to the everyday things and people you see on the street.  From the mundane to the exciting his mind is always assimilating always seeking and always open!

How would you best describe your work and creative process?

Classic, timeless with a modern twist.

Of course, as his catchphrase says “We see our clients all the same: very individually”.  Meaning that he is not rigid in his approach.  The client, their personality, their occupation the client as a whole need to be considered when creating a look.  He further goes on to say that not all of his work is vogue covers and magazine spreads but rather ordinary people like you and me.  People who need a style that makes them feel confident, gorgeous and most importantly that they can manage and maintain when they leave his chair!

How would you describe your Management Style?

Reflecting, he says that this has been a learning curve and an evolution.  And one that has definitely not always been easy.  However, after all the ups and downs and highs and lows it fundamentally comes down to one thing, TRUST.  Everything is fostered through trust. As well as a willingness to allow his staff to thrive in an environment that strives for perfection but not at the expense of creativity or fear of failure.

All this is confirmed when I talk to members of his team.  His team is an eclectic mix of personalities with one underlying commonality, the sheer love and enjoyment they get from working with ‘Alex von Trentini’.  Moreover, the energy, drive and belief he embodies transmits to everything and everyone.

Furthermore, he has a core group, his inner circle, whom he trusts implicitly!  Because with the celebrity status he has acquired comes exposure and more opportunity.  And it is because of this inner circle that he is able to fully embrace and take advantage of all opportunities that come his way.

What’s the next challenge for Alex von Trentini?

As mentioned previously, the salon has twice been awarded Best Salon in Germany!  And he’s hairstylist to the stars!  What’s next?

It’s fair to say that in the past few years, his priorities have ‘broadened’.  As the father to two young boys and another bundle on the way, family is a huge priority!  And he doesn’t want to waste a minute.

Ever humble, his passion, along with hair is to continue to nurture and teach.  In particular to help elevate those within his profession and those looking to break in.  Keep your eyes peeled for more on this in the years to come.

And of course, there is the Cannes Film Festival, Berlin and Paris Fashion Week where he is amongst the sought-after hairstylists to keep him busy!

Can you talk a little about your partnership with Le Bal?

One is chosen to partner!  And it is no small feat to be welcomed into the fold and be amongst le Bal’s most valued partners.

For those who haven’t heard of le Bal here’s a little insight.  Once upon a time, the débutante ball was the ultimate event on any young ladies’ calendar.  It was at this important event that young ladies were introduced into society.  This tradition has long since disappeared.  However, in 1994, Ophélie Renouard invented a modern version that she named “le Bal”.  An incredibly prestigious event with its purpose is to raise money for Charities to help young women.

And so it is that all hair requirements for not only the final event but all the magazine cover shoots, press and events leading up to the final event lie on the shoulders of Alex Von Trentini and his team.

So in closing all I have to say is that Alex von Trentini along with his team are an absolute delight!  And anyone looking for the ultimate hairdressing experience need only head into Wiesbaden to get it!

So whilst the coffee shop remains closed and can only offer takeaway, walk your coffee down the drag to  2nd Home.   2nd Home has beautiful home wear and all sorts of other irresistible things!  With all the time we spending at home makes sense to brighten it up and add an accessory or two.

Altstadt/Innerstadt

A young coffee roasting company who have made themselves a big name!  They roast all their own coffee at their premises in Sachsenhausen as well as supply many local cafes.

They tend to favour light roasts, as it allows them to experience the full complexity of the different origins. Having said that they do have a selection of darker roasts in their Specialty Coffee range for fans of more classic and tart coffee beans.

Where to find them:  Markt 22 (Neue Altstadt) and Friedberger Landstraße 86

Good to know:  The Cafe am Campus is open again at the University

As well as holding a special place in our hearts The Holy Cross Brewing Company serves phenomenal coffee!  They source interesting coffees so pick up a bag to take home with you!

Where to find them:  Fahrgasse 7

A newcomer to the Frankfurt coffee scene with a big emphasis on coffee origins and interesting blends.

From the streets of the old Aldstadt take a step inside a world of perfect French Japanese fusion and be delighted.  Chandeliers hang from the ceiling, enormous mirrors hang from the walls and antique tables and chairs invite you to sit (though of course you can’t at present).  Opulence and grandeur ooze from the walls and pastries and cakes descend from the bakery!

Where to find them:  Braubachstraße 24

We Recommend:  The Matcha Latte

Sachsenhausen

Where to find them:  Schifferstraße 12, 60594 Frankfurt am Main

Way before all the cool kids were doing it and before the coffee culture began to take off in Frankfurt, Julia and Christian had a vision.  And yes you guessed it, Oheim is that vision!  Also, the devil is all in the detail, from the Ethiopian beans they source right down to all the cakes being prepared in house (organic wherever possible).  Unquestionably a coffee shop and concept store with heart, plenty of soul and great coffee!

Where to find them:  Oppenheimer Landstraße 48, 60596 Frankfurt am Main

Cafe Under Pressure owner Sven Wörth has an extensive history in coffee and as a barista!  Undoubtedly 4th place in the German Barista Championship in Berlin is a mammoth achievement!

Every aspect of his coffee haven is made with love. The entire interior was built by Sven himself (he left no detail to chance) and let us just say in our opinion it looks awesome!

If you’re up for a wonderful piece of homemade banana bread, an excellent flat white and a good chat with Sven himself, head on over. You won’t be disappointed.

Where to find them: Große Rittergasse 20, 60594 Frankfurt am Main

We recommend:  definitely try the banana bread

coffee shop

Bornheim and Ostend

It might be easy to dismiss Cafe Maingold as it sits right at the beginning of Zeil.  However, it’s right next to the park and has a lovely area for outside seating when the weather is warm. Walk inside and you’re time warped back to the 1940’s with vintage wallpaper, mixed matched vintage tables and gold framed doors.

Where to find them:  Zeil 1

When your chai latte arrives with a strainer you know you’ve hit the jackpot!!!  None of that teabag nonsense 😜

Where to find them: Hanauer Landstraße 82

We recommend:  the chai latte

Good to know:  they have a fairly extensive ‘to go menu’

On the slightly less ‘crazy’ side of Zeil close to Bornheim you’ll find Try Frankfurt!  The girls there are so super friendly and they have very yummy sandwiches all made fresh right there!

Where to find them:  Zeil 5

If you happen to be one of the guardians of the Euro (thankless job we imagine)or visiting them, then caffeine is necessary!  And Copper Bay is not only the perfect spot for a caffeine shot but also good nutritious food!

Where to find them: Sonnemannstraße 53, 60314 Frankfurt am Main

Europaviertel/Bockenheim

Frida’s is the quintessential coffee shop on the streets of Bockenheim!

Their mission was to create a great place for body, soul and encounters. Bockenheim is so diverse and so are Frida’s patrons. The district is permeated by different cultures and social classes and they want to create the same diversity in their café.

Their beans are currently roasted in Nürnberg. Their standards are for the coffee beans to be specialty coffee.  Ideally lighter roasts but lately there have been some roasters roasting a little darker than average specialty coffees without the coffee losing its complex flavour. The scene is always developing and experimenting.  And with it so does the coffee they serve at Frida’s

Where to find them: Leipziger Str. 108, 60487 Frankfurt am Main

Good to know:  their house speciality is diversity

Cafe Croquant is a stones throw away from where I live and often I have to resist the urge to head over and buy all their croissants!  Still, I’ll buy four for the family and ‘accidentally’ eat them all!

Now for the more discerning breakfast eater, their menu is phenomenal!  Along with the bakery they have avocado, smoked salmon, Parma ham, Camembert, goats cheese!  The platters that are so beautifully constructed that you almost don’t want to eat what on them!

Where to find them:  Europa-Allee 77, 60486 Frankfurt am Main

Good to know:  their breakfast is phenomenal!  During the week their is no need to pre-order, however, weekends please do so the night before!

Niki de saint Phalle exhibition at schirn

“Niki de Saint Phalle” exhibition at Schirn

“Niki de Saint Phalle” exhibition at Schirn is in our opinion alluring, captivating and a beautiful illustration of the artists career.  A career that was prematurely brought to an end by emphysema which almost certainly was a result of her prolific use of toxic materials in many of her works.

The Schirn takes you on a journey through the evolution of the artist and thus the woman behind the ‘artist’.  De Saint Phalle was self taught artist and grappled with different ways of self expression experimenting with a variety of materials and techniques.  One could perhaps argue in attempt to purge and self heal.

Who is Niki de Saint Phalle?

Saint Phalle is one of the late twentieth century’s great creative personalities she bravely forged the way for feminism. Undoubtedly a long long time before it was in vogue to do or the ‘me too’ movement was born.

Born near Paris in 1930, to a French father and an American mother.  However, after her father’s finance company failed they moved to America.  And whilst de Saint Phalle came from a background of privilege this could not protect her from trauma and violence.  Sexually assaulted by her father at age 11 he is often depicted in her works as dragon or reptile and forms the object of much of her anger and rage.

She describes herself as a devouring mother. Devouring a variety of influences from Giotto, early Siennese paintings, Douanier Rousseau, Mexican and Indian temples, to Picasso and Bosch and Arcimboldo.  And after feasting and absorbing the work of all these great influences the child that is born is Niki.

Niki de saint Phalle
Niki de saint Phalle

The Exhibition

The Schirn presents a comprehensive exhibition exhibiting around 100 of the artists work and gives and overview of all the phases of her career which spanned five decades.  The evolution of the artist is both dramatic and simultaneously subtle.  Moving from destruction, anger and often monochromatic to creation on an enormous scale, playful and kaleidoscopic.

And whilst it was the Nanas that gained her attention and fame, her earlier works are as important and give an insight into the artists journey and creative process.

The exhibition runs until MAY 21st and we highly recommend you make your way to see it before it ends.

Rotablo Speciality Coffee

Retablo Speciality Coffee

On a quiet corner in Sachsenhausen now sits Retablo Speciality Coffee, an absolute oasis for any speciality coffee seeker!

We visit during the soft opening only a few short days after the doors open for business.  And, already, there is a steady and continuous flow of eager coffee seekers waiting to be delighted and caffeinated by Tills charms and coffee.

The Story behind Retablo Coffee

In our opinion, a quote by seventeenth-century English author John Donne sums up the Retablo Speciality Coffee story beautifully.

‘No man is an island, entire of itself.’

Till Benner is the face and heart behind Retablo Speciality Coffee!  Without a doubt, this speciality coffee shop dream was his first!  However, many hands helped make his dream a reality!  From angel investors to landlords sent by the ‘gods’ and friends who flock to support him, it was a collective effort.  And whilst he may appear to stand behind the coffee bar alone, he most certainly is not alone in his journey!

What’s behind the name?

’Retablo’ comes from the Latin retro-tabula, meaning “behind the altar”.  And Till, together with the architects, felt that the already existing archers and shapes within the build made this a fitting name!  And at the risk of sounding blasphemous, we couldn’t think of a more perfect ‘substance’ to ‘worship’.

The Vibe

Simplicity, Innovative design and Quality lie at the heart of the cafe.

Retablo Speciality Coffee embraces strong core values aiming not only to serve its new local community but also to help it flourish!   The attention to detail is admirable, from the selection of local coffee roasteries to the thoughtful consideration of what opening hours would best serve the community.

Upstairs is very cleverly designed by architects Aberja to maximise the space entirely.  Firstly, gorgeous high ceilings create a feeling of space, allowing the large windows to flood the upper area with natural light!  Secondly, to boost seating options, one wall plays host to ‘grandstand’ seating, albeit with only two rows; it serves its purpose beautifully!  Thirdly, and we think it’s genius!  Small tables sit on running gears (think sliding doors), allowing them to slide side to side and adjust to your party size!  Last but definitely not least!  The semi-circle coffee bar design creates additional standing space, allowing customers to congregate a little longer than they might at a traditional, narrow, elongated coffee bar.

Furthermore, the granite countertop wooden floor and overall muted colour palette are punctuated with bright pops of canary yellow, adding the perfect amount of playfulness to the overall look!

Moving downstairs, the space is being converted into an event space, so stay tuned for more information on this!

Last but definitely not least, THE COFFEE

Till is no stranger to the coffee world!  Having been fully immersed in the coffee industry for the past ten years, Till has experience and then some!  He also has a clear vision of how he hopes to showcase not just one or two local German coffee roasteries but as many as he feels fit with his concept.

What can you ALWAYS expect to find at Retablo?

Well, you can always expect to find a DARK ROAST and a LIGHT ROAST along with a particular profile.

What can you expect NOT to find at Retablo?

A static lineup of German Coffee Roasteries!  For the most part, Till aims to have a ‘shake up’ every 6-8 weeks, showcasing different coffee roasteries from all across Germany!  And we say bring it on!

Good to know:
  • Want an inside scoop?  The speciality is not on the menu!  Ristretto with milk 😉
  • Fancy a glass of wine or beer?  That’s on the menu too!
  • Easy parking at Parkhaus Alt-Sachsenhausen

Best Wine Tour

Best Wine Tour around Frankfurt

So it’s true that when one thinks of Germany wine is not the first thing that jumps to mind!  But it’s a real shame!  Because Germany has some exceptional wines to offer.  From refreshing mineral-tinged Rieslings, aromatic Spätburgunders (Pinot Noir), and bright sparklings to sweet dessert wines there is plenty to taste.  Now the key, to finding and tasting these delicious German wines is selecting a great tour operator.  And in our opinion, that wine tour operator is BottleStops.

Why use a Wine Tour operator?

In short,  whilst there is plenty available to taste and try it’s not particularly easy to navigate.  Unlike California, South Africa, Australia or Italy which are completely geared toward the wine tourist, Germany is still ‘familiarising’ themselves with the concept.  Even as a German speaker, which we are not, it is difficult to navigate the terrain.

Who is BottleStops?

Behind this thoroughly well-oiled wine tour machine lies Jérôme Hainz.

The story goes that whilst living and working in Asia for many years, Jérôme got tired of the narrative that Germany only had Bratwurst to offer.  As a result, he tasked himself with learning all he could about what his homeland had to offer in food and ultimately wine!  This coupled with his passion for history and geography made the wine industry a perfect melting pot for all his interests to come together.  And so on returning to live in Germany in 2017 BottleStops tours and tastings was born.

In addition to learning about wine BottleStops also gives you gentle immersion in German history and geography.  Explaining how Germany got its start in winemaking.  And how it’s possible that Germany the world’s most northern wine-making region is able to make wine! And it is because of all this that BottleStops wine tours are enriching on so many levels!

Wine Tour with Bottlestops

So recently we had the absolute pleasure of sipping our way through the German winelands with BottleStops.  And boy did we have fun!!  Jérôme is a natural storyteller with the ability to explain historical and geographical facts in a manner that’s simple and easy to digest!   So not only did we learn a whole bunch about wine and its history but we also learnt about the region and its history too!

Stop 1:  Kloster Eberbach

After being picked up from the station our wine tour began at the historical Kloster Eberbach.  Not only is Kloster Eberbach a feast for the eyes but it also forms the foundation of much of the wine-making industry in Germany.  After exploring the monastery with almost 900 years of history below our feet and above our head we were left under no illusions that wine was/is a prominent feature at the estate.  Next, it was onto the tasting room, bright and airy with plenty of options to taste.   And it was here that we had our first lesson in just how varied Riesling can be.  Not only from producer to producer but within a single producer itself.

Stop 2 with lunch: Vinothek RheinWeinWelt

Next up was a yummy lunch and of course more tastings at Vinothek Rheinweinwelt. For want of a better description, it’s a dispensary of sorts for wines. Now whilst we absolutely love the concept!  Essentially you can taste different wines from over 80 wine makers from all across the wine regions under one roof.  And as amazing as this sounds it can be a little intimidating if you are unfamiliar with German wine.  Another good reason to choose Bottlestops!

So how does it work?   First, pay for the number of tastings you’d like and in exchange you receive tokens to take into a tasting dispensary.  Once armed with your tokens head into the tasting area.  Here you find 7 historic brandy tanks that each house winemakers, their wines and the wine dispensers.  Next, choose the wine you’d like to taste and hold your glass under the dispenser spout before popping your token in.  And voila a perfectly measured 20ml tasting dispensers into your glass!

Stop 3:  Bibo Runge

Our final stop was at Bibo Runge weingut!  And this was the perfect way to end our tour!  Bibo Runge is a relatively new and small local producer in Oestrich-Winkel doing innovative and exciting wine-making!

What are the typical Wine Tours that Bottlestops offer?

Day Tours

Typically BottleStops tours will begin with pick up in Mainz at the main train station.  Of course, pick-up can be arranged in Frankfurt for an additional charge.  From there you are whisked away in the BottleStops van into wine country to explore and taste what the German vines have to offer.  In general the tour 6 hours from start to finish with winery visits and a stop for lunch.  Also, the tours have a nice mix of large historical estates, small newer estates and everything in between to give a diverse view of the German Winelands.

Walking Tours

This is a 1.5-hour wine tasting in Mainz.  Also, these tend to be offered exclusively for small groups in a charming wine boutique in the heart of the old town.  Like with the day tours local wine culture, history and geography of the region are included making it a well-rounded experience.  Furthermore, the wines are paired with typical local snacks.  It’s worth noting that the tasting is offered in a very relaxed manner with no formal seating arranged.

Private Tours

If you have a special occasion or can’t find exactly what you looking for BottleStops is happy to work with you and tailor a tour to your needs.

To summarise a wine tour with BottleStops is more than just a wine tour!  It’s the opportunity to learn, meet new people and get out and about in one of the lesser-known wine regions of the world.  So what are you waiting for book now and sip your way along the Rhine!  Cheers!
