Day Trips from Frankfurt

Day Trips from Frankfurt

Sometimes you just need to get out of the city, even if that means heading to another one.  Frankfurt is wonderfully central, and a gateway to a fair few quick day trips in any direction you wish to go.  The region offers diverse day trip options, from enchanting castles to charming villages and picturesque natural wonders. Here are a few of the best day trips from Frankfurt that promise to uncover hidden gems and unforgettable experiences.

Heidelberg is perhaps one of the better-known day trips from Frankfurt.  Having said that, it is not without merit.  From its romantic charm to historical significance, it makes for a great day trip. 3. Koblenz and Surrounds: Rhine Explorations

Distance from Frankfurt: Approximately 120 kilometres (75 miles)

Koblenz is a historical city where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet. Begin by exploring the Old Town, taking a cable car ride to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress for panoramic views, and then journeying to Marksburg Castle, the only hilltop castle on the Rhine that has never been destroyed. A trip to Koblenz and Marksburg Castle offers a glimpse into medieval life and breathtaking river landscapes.

Day Trip Checklist Ideas:

  1. Worth noting is, during the Summer months, there is a regular guided tour in English at 1 o’clock (but always double-check)
  2. Next, check out Eltz Castle.  Likened to jumping straight into a fairy tale, its turrets peak out through dense green forest with nothing but more wilderness for miles.  Unfortunately however, this trip needs to be saved for the milder months as the castle remains closed from November 2nd until March 24th
  3. the Geierlay Suspension Bridge may be just what the doctor ordered for the THRILL SEEKERS.  Please be aware it can only be reached on foot from the car parks in the villages of Sosberg and Mörsdorf

Speyer is a historic city in Germany known for its rich cultural heritage, impressive architecture, and strategic location along the Rhine River.  Moreover, in UNESCO’s words, “Speyer Cathedral is historically, artistically and architecturally one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe. By virtue of its proportions, it is the largest and, by virtue of the history to which it is linked, the most important.

  2. We sat and ate a wonderful meal overlooking the river at Rentschlers

5. Strasbourg: where two worlds collide

Distance from Frankfurt: Approximately 220 kilometres (137 miles)

Admittedly, Strasbourg is not in Germany; it’s located alongside the German border in the northeastern part of France.  As a result of the city’s unique location at the crossroads of French and German, both cultures are reflected in not only its cuisine and architecture but also its traditions.  Furthermore, the city’s historic centre, Grande Île, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Distance from Frankfurt: Approximately 250 kilometres (155 miles)

Undoubtedly, a day trip to the Black Forest may be pushing it, but we decided to put it in anyway!  Because, in our opinion, it’s a journey that’s well worth the effort. However, we do recommend doing it over the weekend.  Immerse yourself in the dark, magical woods, visit charming towns like Triberg, famous for its cuckoo clocks, and revel in the spa town of Baden-Baden with its elegant architecture. Hike through the serene landscape, enjoy a slice of the famous Black Forest cake, and breathe in the fresh forest air.

Things to do:
  1. We have spent many weekends skiing in the Black Forest
  2. If you have kids, make a pit stop at Felsenmeer, a nature reserve of giant boulders!!  Not only will the kids have fun, but they’ll hopefully be exhausted for the rest of the car trip.
  3. Admittedly, Triberg Waterfall may not be for you if you are afraid of heights.  However, they are spectacular and worth the climb.  Also worth mentioning is they are the highest waterfall in Germany.

All in all, day trips from Frankfurt are very accessible, and there is a good range of options. Whether you’re seeking romance in Heidelberg, enchantment in the Black Forest, or cultural enrichment in Speyer and Mainz, there is surely something for everyone. So, if you live in Frankfurt or are only visiting and have a day to spare, why not try one of these day trips to discover the hidden treasures of the surrounding region?  Be sure too to check out some of the fantastic family-friendly activities happening near Frankfurt.

Traditional German Restaurants

7 Traditional German Restaurants you MUST Try

In our opinion, one of the best ways to experience a new country, city or culture is to dive into their traditional food and drink.  So, let’s embark on a culinary adventure and explore some of the traditional German restaurants in Frankfurt!

What is Traditional German Cuisine?

Before we dive in the restaurants, let’s give you a quick overview of what to expect from traditional German cuisine. In short, traditional German cuisine is defined by hearty flavours, with a focus on meat, particularly pork, and a wide variety of sausages. Additionally, potatoes and bread are common staples, with a strong tradition of bread-making in the country. Sauerkraut, fermented cabbage, is a classic side dish, and German desserts are typically rich and sweet.  Finally, one can’t talk about traditional German cuisine without mentioning the beverage that is almost certainly always served alongside it, beer.  Beer culture is undoubtedly very prominent in Germany, with a wide range of beer styles available to sip.

5 Traditional German Restaurants

Now in no particular order, we will guide you through some of our favourite traditional German restaurants where fully immerse yourself in German cuisine.

Adolf Wagner

This tavern, with simple interiors and an authentic atmosphere, has been serving its famous apple wine (Ebbelwoi) and traditional Hessian cuisine since December 19, 1931.  Originally bought by Adolf Wagner and his wife Leni, it is now in its third generation of family ownership.

Oberschweinstiege

Located ‘deep’ in Frankfurt’s Stadtwald (City Forest) overlooking a large pond.  Oberschweinstiege is not only picturesque but also a wonderful restaurant to visit as a family.  With the kid’s playground and large beer garden it offers a delightful experience.

Lohrberg-Schänke

Perched abreast of the scenic Lohrpark, Lohrberg-Schänke offers not only a hearty array of traditional German dishes but also breathtaking views of Frankfurt. This idyllic location allows diners to enjoy their meals amidst a picturesque landscape, making it a perfect spot for those seeking both culinary and visual pleasures. Furthermore, the restaurant’s outdoor terrace is particularly popular, providing a serene and elevated vantage point to take in the city’s skyline and the lush greenery of Lohrpark.

Niewo

Niewo is a charming and rustic gem that seamlessly blends traditional German cuisine with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Located a stone’s throw away from the glorious Günthersburgpark, it is known for its hearty dishes and welcoming service. Moreover, Niewo invites guests to savour classic favourites like Wiener Schnitzel and Sauerbraten. The rustic decor, featuring wooden accents and cosy lighting, enhances the dining experience, creating a perfect setting for both intimate dinners and lively gatherings. With its dedication to quality and tradition, Niewo offers a truly authentic taste of German hospitality in the heart of Frankfurt.

Lorsbacher Thal

You’ll find plenty of tradition to savour at this restaurant. Not only does Lorsbacher Thal serve up traditional German cuisine but it does so in a historic building known as “Haus zur Goldenen Waage” (House of the Golden Scales). This building dates back to the 17th century and is a notable historical landmark in Frankfurt. And adds to the restaurant’s unique and charming atmosphere.

Gerbermühle

Gerbermühle is renowned not only for its traditional German cuisine but also its picturesque location along the banks of the River Main and its unique view of the Frankfurt skyline. The restaurant offers a classic German menu but often prepares it with a modern twist. Additionally, it boasts a fabulous outdoor terrace that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the view of the river and Frankfurt’s skyline. In summary, it’s a combination of historic charm, delicious food, and a beautiful setting.

Franziska

Admittedly, Franziska leans more towards fine dining than traditional fare. However, it serves modern German cuisine with a phenomenal view overlooking Frankfurt, which is why it earns a spot on our list. If you’re looking to indulge in delicious German food and celebrate a special occasion, this should definitely be a top contender!

Typical Hessen Cuisine

Typically, traditional German cuisine as a whole is known for its hearty and satisfying dishes.  Moreover, it is characterised by staples like meats (particularly pork, beef, and poultry), potatoes, bread, sausages, cabbage, and hearty soups and stews.  Regional German cuisine, on the other hand, is more nuanced.  Instead, it focuses on produce and flavours specific to a particular region within Germany.

Here are some of the most popular dishes and ones to look out for:

Grüne Soße (Green Sauce)

Undoubtedly one of Hessen’s most famous culinary dishes.  This Hessian specialty consists of a mixture of seven fresh herbs, sour cream, and yogurt, and people often serve it with boiled potatoes and hard-boiled eggs.

Handkäse mit Musik

Unquestionably, an interesting name.  “Handkäse” literally translates to “hand cheese,” and “mit Musik” means “with music.” While the exact origin of the name is not entirely clear, there are a few theories. For example, it might refer to its rather pungent smell, hint at the sound of digestion after eating (the gurgling and rumbling of the stomach). Or allude to the sound of the social atmosphere often experienced at the taverns where it is eaten.

Regardless of the exact origin of the name, “Handkäse mit Musik” remains a distinctive and unique Hessian speciality. And in our opinion, the name adds a touch of the theatrical to the culinary experience.

Frankfurter Rippchen

These are cured and smoked pork chops, usually served with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.

Ahle Worscht

A type of air-dried and smoked sausage, similar to salami, and commonly eaten in Hessen.

Frankfurter Würstchen

Small, thin sausages, usually made of pork and served with mustard.

Frankfurter Kranz

Now for the sweet stuff.  This is a classic Hessian dessert, it’s a rich buttercream cake decorated with candied cherries and nuts.

So there you have it, our list of  7 must-try traditional German restaurants in and around Frankfurt!  From hearty schnitzels to soul-warming sauerkraut, these charming eateries offer a taste of history and a dash of gemütlichkeit. Gather around the wooden tables, clink your beer mugs, and enjoy the flavours of Germany.

AMATA Coffee

Amata coffee.  Experience “The Essence of Brazil” in Frankfurt.  If their tagline and promise of Brazilian coffee don’t excite you, perhaps the lure of finding authentic Açaí in Frankfurt will.  And with their unique story and friendly faces, you will surely not be disappointed when you visit.

The Story Behind Amata Coffee

3 Friends, 3 different backgrounds, 2 continents united by a single passion, COFFEE.

  1. Luis, the coffee farmer
  2. Niklas, the import/export guy
  3. Wolfram, the roaster

As someone who grew up in a developing country, I greatly admire Amata, their team and what they doing.  And what they are doing, is initiating what the world likes to call “The Ripple Effect”.  So, as you sit drinking your Amata coffee on the streets of Sachsenhausen, know the money you just spent on your morning cup is impacting and improving lives across the world in Brazil!

To clarify!  Their unique goal?  To simplify the process of tree to cup.  And the easiest way to do this?  Eliminate the middleman.  As a result of eliminating the middleman, they improve profits which are then directly reinvested into making the lives of those working in their local area and coffee industry better.  In particular, read more about their social projects below.

The Coffee Farms and Social Impact

Discover their Beloved Fazenda Pinheiro in Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, three hours from São Paulo.  In the past 7 years, they have not only become energy neutral.  But they have put themselves as well as neighbouring farms on the global coffee map. In addition to coffee cultivation, they have 98 hectares of natural reserves and devote 28 hectares to the Projeto Mata Atlantica.

Projeto Mata Atlantica:  Enviromental Impact

Undoubtedly, this initiative is especially significant to them.  Because, it is through this project that they are actively involved in reforestation efforts.  More specifically, planting trees that are native to the Mata Atlantica forest.

Fazedores de Café Program:  Social Impact

A truly admirable project founded by Diego Gonzales in 2013.  Ultimately this project was created to provide free barista training to underprivileged youngsters.  For example, refugees, social minorities and those without the financial means to enter a technical course or higher education.

Amata Coffee through Ocafi, sponsors three students each quarter, as well as donating coffee to be used in the program.

The Vibe at Amata Coffee

Unpretentious!!

Their initial cafe in Sachsenhausen is small and minimalistic, with a primary focus on presenting their unique coffee story. The second location on Berger Strasse, although a much larger space, has remained true to the owner’s minimalist approach. The interior is designed to enhance the experience of every sip and bite, allowing their coffee and acai to speak for themselves, as well as continue to tell their unique bean-to-cup story.

The Brazilian Coffee and Snacks

Without a doubt, Coffee aficionados around the world know what to expect from Brazilian java!  With its distinct flavours, versatility and high quality it’s hard to go wrong with it.

Medium Roast Coffee

At Amata, you can expect to find medium-roast coffee.

Briefly, medium roast is characterized by a moderate level of roasting, which results in a balanced flavour profile. Also, it allows the beans to retain some of their inherent flavour and acidity whilst still showcasing roasted notes. Finally, it is well known for its versatility, which offers a well-rounded taste that appeals to a wide range of coffee drinkers.

Ultimately, however, we all know what makes the coffee at Amata Coffee so unique!  Its commitment to others and social causes.

Brazilian Snacks

As well as Brazilian coffee and Brazilian açaí you’ll find some popular Brazilian snacks!  As of right now, Pão de Queijo is the only name I can remember!

Brazilian Açaí in Frankfurt

So unless you have been living under a rock, we assume that everyone has heard of açaí (pronounced ah-sigh-ee).  However, if you haven’t there is no judgement here!  Truth be told, I had never had açaí in the traditional Brazilian way until I visited Amata Coffee!  And consequently, I will never have it any other way!

So how is Amata’s traditional açaí made?  Well, to begin with, a pulp is created using the whole fruit/berries.  Next, they add mango, apple juice and a little cinnamon to taste.  Finally, the açaí is served using the same machine seen to serve Soft Serve or Soft Eis.

Last but certainly not least, Amata Coffee prides itself on sourcing the freshest Açai through a partner directly from the Amazon Rainforest.

Good to know

  • Card payments only
  • In addition to Acai, they have delicious Brazilian snacks on the menu
  • The second cafe has recently opened on Berger Strasse

Things to do in Frankfurt

Winter Activities in Frankfurt

So it’s safe to say that I have never considered myself a cold-weather person!  And, in fact, the mere thought of the cold sent me straight back under the covers!  Now, this was all well and good while living in India, where we lived, rarely dropped below 20 degrees!  However, after moving to Germany, I needed to choose to either embrace the cold or be miserable for all eternity!!  Honestly, for a while, I chose the latter 😂.  Anyway, my misery eventually bugged the hell out of me, so I figured I’d have to try something else!  As a result, I decided to find things to do in and around Frankfurt during Winter!

How I overcame my hate for cold weather

Well, let me begin by saying that I’ll still choose the heat over the cold! However, I’ve come to appreciate that the cold can offer things that the heat can’t!

First, let me begin with a little anecdote.   After living in Germany for some time and meeting more and more Germans, I noticed a certain pattern in my conversations each winter. In short, it went something like this: I’d moan about the cold.  And like clockwork, I’d get this response, “In Germany, we have a saying that there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” I would then nod courteously and continue with my day, paying little attention.  However, after hearing this little nugget repeated for the umpteenth time, I thought maybe perhaps they had a point!  To sum it up, dress correctly, and life becomes much less miserable outside!

Snow Activities

There is something magical about watching the snowfall!  Catching a cold snowflake on your tongue or hearing the crunch below your feet as you walk through the icy powder is both exhilarating and childlike in its simplicity!  Additionally, we spent many weekends skiing in the Black Forest

Christmas Markets

Undeniably, Christmas markets in Germany are immensely popular, each year attracting visitors from all around.  Also referred to as “Weihnachtsmärkte,” these festive markets captivate each season with their traditional charm.  Not only beckoning guests with twinkling lights, the scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts but with the allure of gorgeous artisanal crafts and gifts to buy and take home to family and friends. In our opinion one of the best ways to embrace chilly weather and get into the holiday spirit!

Ice Skating

Another hugely popular activity in the winter is Ice skating.  And, here are two spots worth checking out:

Skyline Winterzauber

Touting themselves as the highest ice skating rink in Germany this is worth a visit.  Sitting on the top of Skyline Plaza shopping mall overlooking Frankfurt is where you will find this gorgeous ice rink.

Eisporthalle

Also worth mentioning, is that Eisporthalle is open year-round!  And it offers not only public ice skating sessions but also ice hockey and ice dancing events.

Rhein-Main Therme

Now if you looking for a little RnR away from the cold this may be just what the doctor ordered.  However be aware that, like many German spas, Rhein-Main Therme follows the tradition of mixed-gender and clothing-optional areas. Nudity is generally acceptable in saunas, steam rooms, and designated areas, and it’s considered a part of the German spa culture.

Taste the Seasonal Cuisine

Without a doubt, winter walks make for hungry tummies!  So definitely try some of the local winter specialities.  For example the hearty stews, game dishes, pumpkin soup, and fresh apple and pear desserts at local restaurants and markets.  In addition, you may want to check out our list of 5 must-try Traditional German Restaurants.

Top 10 things to do in Frankfurt

Along with a rich historical heritage, thriving financial sector and bustling modern vibe, Frankfurt has one of the largest airports in Europe making it very accessible.  And with its iconic skyline, ancient cathedrals, historic squares and world-class museums, there is no shortage of things to see and do. So without further ado let us guide you through our top 10 things to do in Frankfurt.

Undoubtedly the first thing on our list of top 10 things to do in Frankfurt has to be Römer.  A historic square surrounded by colourful half-timbered buildings and home to the famous Frankfurt Christmas Market.

Take a stroll along the Main River

Pick up a coffee and enjoy the scenic views of the city and the river while walking along the riverbank.  In addition, the path is lined with parks, green spaces, and numerous cafes and restaurants, making it a great place to unwind and enjoy the outdoors.

Check out the Iconic Frankfurt Skyline

Admittedly, New Yorkers may have an opinion on this!  Nevertheless, locals have lovingly dubbed the Frankfurt skyline “Mainhattan” due to its resemblance to Manhattan in New York.  Now, just like there are many ways to skin a cat, there are different ways to see the skyline!

  1. Main Tower.  Unquestionably the go-to tourist option
  2. Lunch at Gerbermühle.  Set along the main river on the outskirts of Sachsenhausen this is probably one of our favourite ways to see the view.  As well as taking in the view you can indulge in some traditional German cuisine
  3. Eiserner Steg (Iron Bridge).  Immerse yourself in the skyline as you take in the view from this bridge, a famous landmark in its own right. It features intricate ironwork and the tradition of “love locks.” To clarify, couples place padlocks on the bridge’s railings and throw the keys into the river as a symbol of their love and commitment.

Try traditional German cuisine

Heading up our list for food and drink in the Top 10 things to do in Frankfurt

  1. Famous Frankfurt Grüne Soße.  Without a doubt, a must-try when in Frankfurt!  This regional speciality is a green sauce served cold over hard-boiled eggs and boiled potatoes.  Briefly, it consists of sour cream and seven different herbs.  Namely, borage, chervil, cress, parsley, salad burnet, sorrel and chives
  2. Apple Wine aka Apfel Wine.  Another local ‘delicacy’!  And, a fun way to try it and see the city is to hop aboard the Ebbelwei-Express.
  3. Schnitzel and sausages.  Ultimately, German cuisine is nothing without its schnitzel, sausages

Each Stolperstein commemorates an individual victim of the Holocaust, providing their name, birthdate, date of deportation, and often, the date of their death.

Shopping in Frankfurt

So whilst shopping in Frankfurt might not be Milan or Paris there is still plenty to explore and keep you busy. From high-street shopping to high-end luxury brands, Frankfurt has it all. Moreover, the city boasts a myriad of independent stores, each with its own unique and eclectic products.  However, knowing where to shop in Frankfurt to find the right stores and products can be challenging so we are here to help!

High Street Shopping in Frankfurt

Unquestionably the primary destination for high street shopping in Frankfurt is Zeil. This bustling shopping street is home to a plethora of top-notch fashion and retail stores.  Along with international brands like H&M, Zara, and MAC, you’ll also find large department stores Galeria Kaufhoff and Douglas.  In addition, you can find MyZeil shopping centre with its innovative architectural design and an impressive and striking curved glass façade.  Moreover, Zeil offers an array of affordable and trendy fashion options, making it the perfect place for high-street shopping.

Shopping in Frankfurt

Berger Straße

Unlike Goethestraße, this street offers a mix of shops, cafes, and restaurants in a more relaxed atmosphere. Moreover, Berger Straße has a bohemian feel compared to the high-end luxury shopping areas.  Consequently, it makes it a great place to explore unique finds and a taste of local culture.

Schweizer Straße

Similarly, if you head over the river to Sachsenhausen you’ll find Schweizer Straße.  Another, fairly quirky street with unique boutiques, art galleries, and plenty of great cafes.  Also, it’s the perfect area to try out some of the local tipple aka Apfelwein.

Independent Shops and Retailers

Undoubtedly, we believe very strongly in supporting local wherever possible And luckily, Frankfurt shopping has plenty of fabulous independent shops and retailers.  So, without further ado, we’ll list some of our favourites below.

Admittedly, Frankfurt is not well known for second-hand and vintage shopping!  However, there are still a few spots for you to check out!  Namely, Style Definery for Luxury second-hand accessories and clothing and Vintage Revivals in Sachsenhausen.

For the Foodies

Absolutely all foodies should make a turn at Kleinmarkthalle! Kleinmarkthalle is a bustling indoor market with fresh food, produce, and local specialities. Great for gourmet shopping.

Also, when the weather is nice or for the hardened food shopper when the weather is not, check out Konstablerwache Market.  A big favourite with the locals!

Sleep Coaching with Jane the Sleep Coach

SLEEP!  Is only a problem when you not getting any!  And once upon a time when you weren’t getting any that was that!  Thankfully now days you have options!  Namely sleep coaching!  And we have just the coach for you, Jane the sleep coach.

What is Sleep Coaching or a Paediatric Sleep Coach?

In essence, a pediatric sleep coach is a professional who specialises in helping parents and children with sleep-related issues. They provide guidance, strategies, and support to establish healthy sleep routines for infants, toddlers, and children. These coaches can assist with problems like bedtime resistance, night waking, and other sleep disturbances to promote better sleep for both the child and their parents.

Also worth emphasising is the word “coach”.  Unlike a night nanny, night nurse or babysitter your coach does not do the work for you. Meaning they do not come into your home pick up your infant and leave you to sleep.  Instead, this is a long-term strategy equipping you with all the tools to deal with any sleep challenges that arise at any point.

Who is Jane the Sleep Coach

She is your SALVATION!  And more to the point, Jane is a qualified paediatric Sleep Coach.

Originally from England, she now lives in Bad Soden with her husband and four children.  Previous to Germany she lived in Dubai and Switzerland.  Meaning she is no stranger to schedule disruption or children who won’t sleep.

As well as being the mum of four children, Jane has been working with kids to some degree or another since the age of 14!  After finishing school she went on to be a kindergarten teacher for many years.  As a result, she gained invaluable knowledge and insight into families while living in various parts of the world.

How and where does Jane work?

As with everything in life,  there is no magic pill or a one size fits all when it comes to creating consistent sleep routines or patterns.  Therefore, Jane’s goal is to create a personalised sleep plan that fits with you and your family’s needs.  Importantly, her calm, non-judgmental, and empathetic approach ensures that you feel comfortable throughout the process.

Jane will equip you with sleep training skills that you can use for a lifetime.  Finally, be aware if you do choose to go the sleep coach route it requires commitment and consistency.

What is more, the consultations and communication are done remotely.  In an effort to give you the best chance of fitting it into your schedule.  Also, it allows Jane to be at your disposal when you need her most.

Parents to be and New Parents

Why wait until sleep becomes a problem?  Also, there is no need to begin your parent journey under the impression that you will never sleep again!  Unlike parents of years gone by you have the opportunity to be proactive in the formative days, months and years of your child’s sleep journey.  For example, Jane offers a fantastic once-off consultation that gives you a great foundation for creating good sleep routines and patterns.

Good to know

  • Before considering sleep coaching ensure your calendar is fairly quiet and that you have no major travel plans
  • Consistency and commitment are essential to a successful outcome
  • All consultations and communication are done remotely
  • Sleep coaching is recommended from 4 months of age

Frankfurt recycling and waste separation

Frankfurt recycling and waste separation

At first, it may seem like you need a PhD in order to understand Frankfurt recycling and waste separation rules!  However, with a little guidance, anyone can do and more importantly everyone MUST do it!  In essence, there are 4 bins at your disposal (see what I did there 😜) at home.  Namely Black, Blue/Green, Yellow/Orange and Brown.

Green/Blue Recycling Bins in Germany – Paper

First in line, the green and blue trash bins in Germany are for paper and cardboard.

Brown Recycling Bins – Biodegradable (Biomüll)

Next, it’s time to get composting! If however, you are not inclined to do it yourself, the council will do it for you by way of the trusty Brown Recycling Bin.  These brown bins are designed to collect organic waste that can be composted, which is a sustainable way to manage organic materials and reduce landfill waste. It’s an eco-friendly approach.

Also, you can often head down to your local Burger Buro to pick up the paper bags free of charge.

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Other food waste

Grey/black Trash Bins – (Restmüll)

Last but definitely not least the grey/black bin.  Most household waste that does not belong in the bins mentioned above will then be disposed of in the Grey/Black trash bin.  Below we list some of the things that are accepted.  However, be aware to not overfill the trash bin or dispose of illegal items as this can lead to a fine.  If you find that you have an unusual amount of waste to dispose of you can buy black trash bins for a small fee from your local Burger Buro.  These can then be disposed of alongside your usual black bin.

Glass Recycling in Frankfurt

Dotted all around the city you will find large recycling bins where you can dispose of your glass waste.  It is divide into three categories namely white, green and brown glass.  Before depositing all your glass bottles double check that you are not entitled to Pfand ie a deposit back.

Pfand Recycling in Frankfurt

In Germany, cans and bottles (both plastic and glass) included in the Pfand system are usually marked with a special symbol.  Namely a ‘Pfand’ logo or ‘Pfand’ on the label.  The deposit amount varies depending on the type and size of the bottle but is typically around €0.08 to €0.25.  To properly recycle them and get your deposit back:

  1. Purchase beverages with a Pfand-eligible bottle.
  2. After consumption, rinse the bottle.
  3. Return it to a supermarket or store that participates in the Pfand system.
  4. Use a reverse vending machine or return it to the store’s designated collection point.
  5. You’ll receive your deposit back in cash or as a voucher, which you can use for your next purchase.

In short, this system encourages recycling and helps reduce plastic waste while also giving consumers an incentive to participate.

Viktoria Lorenz German Fashion Designer

Viktoria Lorenz: Creating Wearable Art

Amidst a world overrun with fast fashion and instant gratification, it’s rare to come across someone who values craftsmanship, quality and individuality. And it is German fashion designer, Viktoria Lorenz’s commitment to these fundamental values that sets her apart.   And it makes for a refreshing approach in today’s fast-paced industry.

Viktoria Lorenz german fashion designer

Who is Viktoria Lorenz?

Young, inspired and oodles of talent!  It’s hard to imagine me having such a clear idea of who I was, never mind what I wanted to do at such a young age.  Perhaps one might describe Viktoria as an ‘old soul’ wise beyond her years! An absolute delight to interview, she as interested in me as I in her!  Self-absorbed definitely isn’t her style.

So let us begin.  Viktoria Lorenz, the girl, was born in Wiesbaden.  However, Viktoria Lorenz, the designer, was born just outside of Chicago at the tender age of 13.  And it was from the quiet of her teenage room that Viktoria first stumbled upon RAF Simons.  Moreover, his first collection for Dior.  And it was that collection that bewitched a young Viktoria and set her on a path she has walked ever since.  She would go on to spend endless days and nights meticulously researching not only the origins, collections and designers of Dior but also each of the iconic fashion houses.  Namely, Chanel, Alaïa, Givenchy, Valentino the list goes on and on.

At first, drawing did not come naturally to her.  But never one to be put off by challenge she dedicated hours to mastering the art. With each stroke of the pencil, she honed her craft and developed her own unique style allowing her to bring her own designs to life.

Viktoria approached her studies with the same 360° and fully immersive approach as her early days researching every aspect of the fashion industry.  Choosing both a formal education at the Fashion School in Mannheim as well as a hands-on approach apprenticing with her most trusted seamstress.  Learning the intricacies of transforming and manipulating a piece of fabric into visions she could once only hold in her head. Undoubtedly, this deeper understanding contributes to her ability to design with a higher level of skill and creativity.

Collaborations and Fashion Shows

Bringing a fashion collection and fashion show to fruition is no small feat.  Hours and hours of hard work, dedication, and creativity are just for starters.  Next, add a little luck and plenty of guts. Finally but most importantly a concept and perhaps a muse.  Viktoria Lorenz found both in ZERO!

She first came across ZERO on a trip to the Guggenheim Museum in New York with her mother.  ZERO is an art movement that was started in Düsseldorf by the group of German artists Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, and Günther Uecker.  Pioneers and very active in the 50’s and 60’s they galvanised artists and movements all across Europe.  Today they have a foundation that exhibits and supports causes close to their hearts.

Viktoria and her approach piqued their interest.  And so it was that they came together to help her exhibit her very first 12-piece collection and fashion show.

Furthermore, her pieces have been seen on the likes of Ava Max, Alessia Cara, Griff’s dancers and our very own Wiesbaden Celebrity Hair Stylist Alex Von Trentini.

Viktoria Lorenz

Viktoria Lorenz Design Process

Creating Wearable Art!

For many this statement may conjure up garish and outrageous pieces you may only find on the runways of Paris and Milan her process is far more subtle and nuanced.  And whilst, her primary objective is to craft extraordinary pieces!  Her goal too is that they be versatile enough to not only be dressed up or down but also worn multiple times.

The German Fashion Designer loves to play with and manipulate fabrics creating not only 3 dimensional aspects to the pieces but rather a full 360° aesthetic.  Each angle offers the viewer something new to admire and appreciate.

Undoubtedly Viktoria’s passion for fashion extends beyond the surface. And she aspires to create clothing with profound meaning, connecting fashion to deeper topics and causes. Her thoughtful approach makes her more than just a fashion designer they make her deeply human.

Where can you buy your piece of wearable art?

If you are not sure where to start?  Accessories, like the Viktoria Lorenz statement backpacks, are a great entry point.  They are perfect for anyone looking to express their style, even those who might be a little more fashion-shy. They offer a versatile way to add a touch of individuality to an outfit.

Otherwise, get in touch directly and head over to her beautiful atelier and find the perfect piece for you.  Viktoria loves the close connection that develops with her clients as they come together to create something that fits seamlessly and makes them feel extraordinary.

Everything is made to order.

Playground

Best Playgrounds in Frankfurt for Kids

Something Frankfurt has a relatively good percentage of, is green space!  And within this 144 squared kilometres of lushness you are sure to find a safe space for your little humans to run around like lunatics!  When putting together our list of best playgrounds in Frankfurt we decided that there needed to be some aspect to if not entertain the adults, at least caffeinate them!  However, as we all know it’s not a perfect world and thus playgrounds without coffee and food options have been noted.

Sachsenhausen Playground at Goetheturm

Since arriving in 2018 this has been a family favourite of ours!  Not only is there the park but it also backs on the forest where you can ride bikes, build log hideaways and not worry about taking snacks because the restaurant is great!  Also, take a minute to climb Goetheturm and get a phenomenal view over the city!  Also, the playground was recently given a little make over improving the water play section and maze area!

Good to know:  Schmidt_Peccolo am Goetheturm Restaurant serves up traditional german cuisine as well as ice cream and coffee.  Also, they have a take away window so you don’t need to be seated.
Where to find it:  Goetheturm Playground Location

Drachenburg (Spielplatz)

This playgrounds sits in the heart of Frankfurt and made the list not only because it sits right next to our favourite trinkhalle Fein. But because you you can kill two birds with one stone meaning two play dates in one!  Little humans get a play date and mummy/daddy does too!   Now before you judge us, alongside a good Aperol spritz they also serve great coffee and cakes!

Good to know:  the playground is set in a giant sandpit
Where to find it:  Drachenburg Location

Günthersburgpark Kinderspielplatz

Come summer or winter Günthersburgpark and playground is an absolute ‘must know’ for all parents who want to remain sane!  Without a doubt the water slide during the summer months is a popular activity and it provides not only fun but also the opportunity for kids to learn patience!  As well as the water activities there are plenty of other things to do.  Namely the playground with slides, swings, sandpits, basketball court and a football pitch which is literally anywhere and everywhere!

Good to know: There is a Kiosk providing the necessary caffeine, alcoholic beverage and emergency snack when the picnic is devoured 30 seconds after arrival.
Where to find it:  Günthersburgpark Location

Heinrich-Kraft-Park Playground

The zip line and a huge fort like structure at the centre had my kids screeching with delight!  Further a field you’ll also find space to play football, basketball and a small skate park section.

Good to know:  take your own caffeine and SNACKS
Where to find it:  Heinrich-Kraft-Park Location

Spielplatz im Ostpark

Ostpark is a green oasis in the surprise surprise East of the city!  And along with having two playgrounds, one for younger kids and one for older kids it also has a great skate park.  However, we advise little ones only use the skate area early in the day with supervision.  Furthermore the park itself is characterised by the Riedgraben lake which is great for watching the geese and bird life and various other sports facilities, including football and basketball pitches.

Good to know:  there is a kiosk southeast of the pond otherwise check out Aniis, Oosten
Where to find it:  Ostpark spielplatz older kids location ; Ostpark for the younger kids

Palmengarten

Firstly we feel it’s important to mention that entry is not free, however, in our opinion it is still definitely worth the visit.  And each season brings something new!  During the summer months take advantage of the sprinkler play area, in the winter head for the hot house or see winter light show.  And all year round feel free to row a boat, take a ride on the Palmengarten express, try your hand at a round of mini golf or simply just wander the glorious gardens!  One thing is for sure there is plenty to keep little hands and feet busy and plenty to learn.

Good to know:  Palmengarten Entry Fees

Waldspielpark Schwanheim

This is such a cute playground for kids on the lower age spectrum!  Also if your kids are into dinosaurs then this is an absolute must!  With many of the climbing frames and obstacles dinosaur themed!  Also, during the summer months it has a sprinkler or splash area for kids to enjoy.  Also, not far from the park you’ll find  Struwwelpeter Baum which is great fun for the kids to see

Best rooftop bars in Frankfurt

Best rooftop bars in Frankfurt

Not many things beat a rooftop bar when the sky is blue and the weather glorious!!  And if the cocktails don’t get you a little lightheaded then the thin air high up in the rooftops is sure to😜!  Another important aspect in our opinion for a  rooftop bar is a great view, the neighbours bedroom is just not going to cut it.  So, without further a do here are our list of great rooftop bars for your your visiting pleasure!!

NFT SKYBAR

NFT Skybar currently holds the title for highest rooftop bar in Germany!  And having to equalise your ears as you reach the 47th floor it’s impossible not to notice the change in altitude!  With an epic 360-degree view of Frankfurt it’s worth an visit even if only for the view.  Having said that, we highly recommend a sneaky cocktail because what’s a rooftop visit without something to toast it.  What’s more, NFT SKYBAR take cocktails to a whole new level!  With Artist David Zucker having created a collection of digital artworks inspired by the rooftop bar’s signature cocktails.

The bar itself runs half the length of the room with the restaurant section wrapping around to one side creating an L shaped space.  Moving outside is an impressive wraparound terrace which is enclosed by (we’re guessing) 4+ meter high glass walls allowing you an almost immersive experience with the view.

Opening Hours:

Tues to Sat: 6pm – 1am

Good to know:
  • It’s situated in nhow Frankfurt a stone throw away from Skyline Plaza

NFT Skybar Frankfurt

OBEN

Oben Restaurant and Skybar gives you a view of Frankfurt’s unique and beautiful skyline. It sits perfectly nestled high up amongst the rooftops in Frankfurts Westend.  With vibrant Mediterranean colours and flavour it makes for a visual feast both on an off the plate.  Importantly and absolutely worth noting is that Oben forms part of the impressive portfolio of Iñigo Urrechu.

Opening Hours:

Tues to Sat:  6pm – 12am
Sun and Mon:  Closed

Good to know

CITY BEACH

Walking through the Konstabler parkhaus you may think you’ve been sent on some sort of wild goose chase!  However, I can assure you this is not the case!  Persevere, keep walking, and a piece of tropical magic in the centre of Frankfurt awaits you.  Undoubtedly it’s as though you’ve walked through a gateway portal into a parallel universe.

The rooftop bar is cleverly ‘divided’ into sections with each section providing something different. 2 pools (ok the term pool is used very loosely here as the water only goes as high as your knee) and giant pink flamingos lazily bob up and down as the breeze gently nudges them along. Blue and purple cushions flank the pool offering a comfortable seat as you sit and dip your toes into the aquamarine water, complete the idyllic scene with a cocktail!

If admiring the iconic Dom Romer is your pleasure, grab a deck chair, dig your toes deep into the white sand and watch as the clouds float by behind the gothic cathedral spire.

Hungry?  Move across to the table and chairs and peruse their food menu.

Opening Hours:
  • Mon to Thurs:  12pm – 11pm
  • Friday:  12pm – 12am
  • Sat:  11am – 12am
  • Sun:  11am – 11pm

Good to know:
  • City Beach website
  • As the entire site is outdoor their opening is weather dependent, thus, it’s prudent to check their website which gives you the latest before heading over

Escape the heat

LILY’S BAR

Perched high up above Alte Oper in the Sofitel hotel lies Lili’s bar!  The rooftop space is small, intimate and offers a phenomenal view particularly lovely as the sun sets!  However, it is a fairly small space so large groups of friends are perhaps better choosing form some of the larger rooftop bars.  Also, its prime real estate so be prepared to have the prices reflect this!

Opening Hours:

Daily:  12pm – 11pm

Good to know:

CHICAGO ROOF ROOFTOP BAR

Nestled high up on the Gekko House rooftop lies Chicago Roof Rooftop Bar!  Decking and a large foliage wall are just some of the features helping create the gorgeous contrast against the Frankfurt skyline!  Whether you begin an evening with sundowners on the rooftop and then head down for some traditional American BBQ in Chicago Williams or vice versa is entirely up to you!  Also, feel free to skip dinner and just enjoy the rooftop vibes.

Opening Hours:
  • Mon to Friday:  5pm – 10pm
  • Sat and Sun:  2pm – 10pm

Good to know:

BAR MARMION

Bar Marmion is unlike your usual hotel bars which can often be sterile and lacking in personality!  Perched high up on the 5th floor of the Lindley Hotel the bar oozes old school glamour and charm.  A winding staircase take you up a level to the open rooftop where you look out across the city breath in the ‘Ostend’ vibes!  Furthermore, the bar is an extension of the two resident barmen/operators Malwin Hillier and Torsten Martini and thus you are guaranteed that night out here will always be anything but dull!  Best bit, if you up for an all nighter and literally want to fall into bed, book a room and your wish is Lindleys command!

Opening Hours:
  • Mon to Thurs:  5pm – 1am
  • Fri and Sat:  5pm – 2am
  • Sun:  Closed

Good to know:

So there you have it!  Plenty of options to get out and see Frankfurts gorgeous skyline from all sides.  And if you prefer your views closer to the ground then check out our favourite beer gardens in and around Frankfurt.

Best Cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt

Top Cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt

So, for all the utter hell COVID put us through, perhaps one positive to come out of it is a more relaxed view of remote working.  Another thing I learned during COVID-19 is that only one spouse should be home at any particular time working remotely 😜. Meaning, if both of you are home you might want to check out some of the top cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt listed below!

The criteria we judged the Top Cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt

  1. easy access to WI-FI (duh)
  2. space – nothing worse than a ‘side eye’ from the manager encouraging you in a not-so-subtle way to leave so they can have the table
  3. good coffee – imperative in our opinion for Best Cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt

Copper Bay Superfood and Coffee

Here’s why we think Copper Bay is an excellent choice for working remotely in Frankfurt:

  • Firstly, they don’t pressure you into drinking more coffee than you like – your beverage preferences don’t affect your eligibility to work there.
  • Secondly, the cafe is fully digitalised.  So you can control your level of interaction with the staff. You can use the app to submit your order through a QR code on your table if you prefer to be left alone.
  • Lastly, because we can’t yet move things with our minds, the staff will bring your order right to your table.  And if you need any recommendations or assistance, they’re more than happy to provide it.

We love:   Pesto Rosso toast with goat cheese and walnuts (add an egg for good measure 😉)

Where to find them:  Copper Bay Location

Concept cafe

Die Grüne Kaffeebohne

Along the bustling Hanaulandstraße lies another cafe worth exploring – Die Grüne Kaffeebohne.  It is a relatively new cafe to the Frankfurt coffee scene and worth a visit.  Particularly lovely is a large attention-grabbing mural of Wangari Muta Maathai. A woman who was just as attention-grabbing with her extensive activist work, inspiring millions of women and planting just as many trees!

We love:  my boys absolutely love the raw peanut bar.

Where to find them:  Die Grune Kaffeebohne Location

Rich Barista

Rich Barista is located in the lobby of nhow Frankfurt Hotel next to Skyline Plaza.  What we love about working from here is that whilst it can get pretty busy at lunch, often it’s low-key and relaxed.  Also, they have a varied lunch menu, a different dish for each day, freshly made on-site!

Finally, if you are a sweet cakes fan, you must try them here!  Because the word has it, the GM is a massive lover of all things sweet!  Meaning, that their freshly made pastries and cakes are absolutely ON POINT!

We love:  the lentil soup served on Thursdays is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS.

Where to find them:  Rich Barista Location

Stacks

Stacks now stand where Bohnerie once stood!  But if you were a fan of the previous owners, don’t worry because the new owners seem just as cool!  Importantly, though, they do bring their own flavour and spin!  Briefly, two brothers combine their two passions, coffee and music, aka barista and DJ!  Without a doubt, MUSIC is a big focus here! And spontaneity is their vibe!

It’s a split-level cafe, which in itself is unique here in Frankfurt. The interior is relaxed and casual.  Downstairs, simple wooden tables are dotted around, with a large bar and stools at the window.  A staircase spirals up to the second level, where an enormous wooden table commands the space.  And it’s perfect for working or for large group gatherings.

Good to know:  as mentioned, music is a big focus!  So, working here early in the morning is best, as things can get festive!

We love:  the vibe!

Best cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt

Cafe Under Pressure

Another of our Top Cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt sits on the quieter side of Sachsenhausen.  Undoubtedly, every aspect of this coffee haven is made with love, and Cafe Under Pressure is a true hidden gem. It should be noted that the entire interior was built by the owner Sven himself.  To sum up, he has left no detail to chance and in our opinion it’s perfect!

We love:  the banana bread.

Where to find them:  Cafe Under Pressure Location

Kaffeemacherei

First and foremost, Kaffeemacherei is a fully vegan cafe situated in Nordend.  And what began as a small, intimate cafe on Eckenheimer Landstraße has blossomed into an expansive space on Bornwiesenweg!  Unquestionably, Golnaz has gone from strength to strength with her incredible vision!

Good to know:  fully vegan

Where to find them:  Kaffeemacherei Location

So there you have it!  Our top cafes to work remotely in Frankfurt!

BEER GARDENS and rooftop bars

BEER GARDENS in Frankfurt

Not many things beat a relaxed beer garden when the weather is glorious!!  Now, if beer and gardens aren’t your thing and you prefer your lightheadedness from free-flowing cocktails and the thin air 😜 high up on the rooftops!  Then, we have just the thing for you: rooftop bars!  However, we are here to discuss glorious beer gardens, so without further ado here is our list for your visiting or rather, drinking pleasure!!

Lohrberg-Schänke

Lohrberg-Schänke is a popular beer garden located on Lohrberg Hill in Frankfurt. It offers stunning panoramic views of the city’s skyline, making it a picturesque spot for enjoying traditional German beers and local food. If you’re after a tranquil and refreshing beer garden experience, look no further than this hidden gem.  Lohrpark is also a wonderful place to picnic or walk with the kids!

Main Terrasse

Situated on the south side of the river, it offers up not only great beer but a view back over the city!  Also, tapas and steak are on the menu, along with a DJ who sizes up the crowd and certainly gets the vibe going!  Whether you’re soaking up the sun in the afternoon or enjoying the twinkling city lights in the evening, Main Terrasse provides a quintessential Frankfurt experience that captures the spirit of gemütlichkeit.

Opening Hours (may vary in bad weather):

Mon-Fri 4 pm – 11 pm
Sat 2 pm – 11 pm
Sun 2 pm – 9 pm

Good to know:

NIDDASTRAND – Beer garden

What an absolute little oasis (ok, minus the water 😬). Undoubtedly, though, the sand between your toes and the green polo fields across the way make up for the lack of sea!  Deck chairs, large umbrellas and a designated kids area mean that parents can sit back, relax and enjoy the beer on tap.  In case you are hungry, the ‘brot und wurtz’ coming off the BBQ keeps growling tummies at bay.  All in all, it makes for an outstanding day out!

Also, having mentioned the polo fields above, if you are interested in watching a game, check out Frankfurt Polo Club for their tournament timetable!

Lastly, be aware this spot is seasonal and only open in the Summer.

Opening Hours:

  • Daily 11am – 12am

Good to know:

  • Niddastrand website
  • It’s easily accessible when cycling along the Nidda River
  • A designated section in the sand for kids with plenty of sand toys available

NAIV – Beer garden

They specialise in craft beer!  And they have a bazillion to choose from!  Just kidding,  they have around 50 varieties from around the world and three in-house brews!  Without a doubt, there is a beer to satisfy most palettes, and if not well, there is always wine!

Also, there is an impressive list of tastings to choose from, such as beer and cheese (here we thought only cheese paired with wine ????), beer vs wine with cheese tasting, and whiskey and gin!  The list goes on and on and left our heads reeling at the sheer number of choices available to taste.  Undoubtedly, naiv tastings are anything but boring!

Not to be outdone by the impressive variety of beer ‘on tap’, the restaurant serves up a mean dish in a relaxed environment!

Opening Hours:

  • Mon – Friday: 4pm–1am
  • Sat and Sun:  12pm–1am

Good to know:

SCHIFFSMELDESTELLE (SMS) – Beer garden

On the Höchst bank of the Main lies this glorious little spot!  Nicknamed SMS by those who love it, you need only be there a few moments to be fully sold on why you stopped!  Once upon a time, the location served as the registration location for passing ships; now, it serves only to make you smile, enjoy the weather and place a suitable beverage in your hand!  The “Hessian Côte d’Azur”, as named by owners Frank Wellert and his wife Lizza, is helped along with large white umbrellas, deck chairs and chilled music playing from the speakers.

Opening Hours:

  • Mon – Friday:  3pm – 10pm
  • Sat and Sun:  12pm – 10pm

GERBERMÜHLE

I considered leaving Gerbermühle off the list because, as a result of COVID-19, they have closed the beer garden and instead extended their a la carte menu.  However, the location and setting are just fabulous and still well worth a visit in the relaxed garden setting!

Undoubtedly, it is still a perfect ‘pit stop’ for those taking a stroll or a cycle along the river main.  Indulge yourself in Frankfurt classics like ‘Appelwoi’ and ‚Handkäs‘ before continuing on your journey, or simply don’t, continue on your journey we mean.

Said to be the site where the fabled German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe met his Marianne and gave her his heart.  Set along the south side of the main river, it offers a different view of the skyline than you might be used to.

Opening Hours:

Lunch
Daily 12:00 pm–5:00 pm
Dinner
Daily 5:00 pm–10:00 pm

Good to know:

  • Gerbermühle website
  • The terraces during the summer months are sublime
  • there is parking onsite (60 spaces available)

Who is Speakeasy, The Social Language School

The name says it all really!  ‘The Social Language School’, I mean who doesn’t want to go to a school where the social is just as important as the learning!

Speakeasy offer their students the opportunity to learn in a fun environment where learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom!  Importantly too, they have a young dynamic team who embody what they stand for.
