Alex von Trentini

Alex von Trentini Hair Salon

Few relationships in life require more trust than the one with your hairdresser!  So finding a good one is worth its weight in gold!  And finding one with a more impressive CV and barrage of clients than Alex von Trentini is rare.  However, what makes Alex von Trentini hair salon worth the visit, is that it is about more than just one man Alex von Trentini!  It’s about the team he has built around him!  And the service they provide!

The Story Behind Alex von Trentini Hair Salon

In short, hairdressing runs through his veins (and his family’s).  He’s from a hairdressing family he tells me!  His father is a hairdresser and so too is his brother.  Read the full story and interview.

The Vibe

Relaxed and unpretentious!

In our opinion, the reception area welcomes you with a subtle nod to the Op Art Era.  Thick striped black and white wallpaper contrasting with geometric-shaped patterned upholstery and soft furnishings.  A glass and chrome coffee table plays host to perfectly laid-out magazines and books to flick through as you sit sipping your welcome tea.

The monochromatic theme continues throughout the salon creating clean lines and a modern feel.  Each hairdresser has their own personal wooden cart which stores their essentials and favourite tools of the trade.  These are wheeled around the salon as needed before standing to attention like little wooden soldiers.

The salon space is large but very cleverly divided into three sections. A reception area, a main cutting area and finally a slightly smaller wash and additional seating area.  Meaning when you visit you are not lost in a cavernous space that feels impersonal or production line’esc. Furthermore, the salon has a private room specifically set up for those who wish to sit away from prying eyes or just prefer a little additional privacy and quiet.

The Team at Alex von Trentini Hair Salon

ATTENTIVE!

A team is only as strong as its weakest link!  And as far as I could see there wasn’t one.  In fact, what really struck me was the eclectic mix of personalities each bringing with them their specific strengths and character.  There is no cookie-cutter effect with the staff Alex von Trentini chooses to employ.  The staff are from different parts of the country, different ages, different work backgrounds and different personalities.  What is plain to see is the team and how it functions together as a whole is important when you are invited in to join the fold.  Laughter and genuine friendship seem to fill the hair salon with mentoring and camaraderie being the norm.

Alex von Trentini himself only rarely takes new clients these days.  Unfortunately with his schedule so busy he relies more and more on his team!  But as mentioned above the team is more than up to the job!  Continuous professional training and development of the team happen every month so they are always up to speed on trends and the latest techniques.

The Service

Undoubtedly it’s about more than just getting your hair done!  In fact, it’s an experiential service from the welcome tea on arrival to hand scrub as you sit in your treatment chair to the scalp massage.  UTTER BLISS!  Together with their product partner La Biosthetique, they take you through a 10-step beauty process. And this means that not only do you leave the salon with great hair but also relaxed or at least a few stress levels lower!

Good to know

  • The phenomenal Katerina Klär took charge of my blonde locks!  And let’s just say she certainly had her work cut out for her!  I left with the biggest grin and the best highlights I’ve ever had!
  • The additional fully private room can be booked at an additional charge.  Here you are completely separate from the other clientele and are welcomed and treated with the utmost discretion
  • Both Alex von Trentini hair salons are located in Wiesbaden but are TOTALLY worth the trip!

Alex von Trentini

Alex von Trentini, the man behind the scissors

Recently I had the absolute pleasure to sit down and interview Alex von Trentini!

I set off from Frankfurt with time to spare and then some! But of course, road works and road closures play havoc with timing and next thing you know I’m running down Bahnhofstraße in heels like a complete lunatic!  Breathing heavily, my heart pounding out of my chest and completely flustered I enter the Salon.  However I am greeted by the widest grin from Andreas the salon manager, and immediately my heart rate begins to settle.  Over the next few hours that same initial sense of warmth and openness resurfaces again and again regardless of the member of staff I am interacting with.

After arriving I am seated in reception and offered a welcome tea.  Step 1 in a very well-thought-out customer experience.  And this gives me just about enough time to compose myself before meeting the man of the hour!

First Impressions, Alex von Trentini

Alex von Trentini!  Twice named best salon in Germany.  His work has featured in Vogue, Gala and Cosmo to name but a few.  He has a celebrity client list to make anyone swoon.  And whilst you might expect to find an air of arrogance or pretentiousness about him there is absolutely none of this.  Instead, he comes bounding around the corner with the broadest smile on his face. And immediately I get a sense of why he has achieved all that he has.  He is relaxed, and down to earth but exceptionally self-assured and an absolute delight to interview.  Over the next hour, I get to know a little more about the man behind the scissors.

Alex von Trentini

So where exactly does a man of his success begin his journey?

In short, hairdressing runs through his veins (and his family’s).  He’s from a hairdressing family he tells me!  His father is a hairdresser and so too is his brother.  He laughs as he goes on to say that focus wasn’t a big priority for him at school.  And so with the encouragement of his father, he left school early to begin his apprenticeship and hairdresser training. A decision that would prove itself the right decision again and again.

Newly ‘unshackled’ he fully embraced life and all it had to offer.  This is to say it took him a little time to realise and fully appreciate the incredible talent he had.  However, a ‘close call’ in his final assessment at hair school gave him all the insight he needed.  In short, his style created a very polarising opinion amongst his examiners.  One called him brilliant the other terrible.  The difference between success and failure is so subjective.  Moreover, he realised that whilst he had scored an almost unheard-of full points for both women’s and men’s haircuts it could have gone either way.  Talent he had in droves!  Because let’s face it average is never polarising!

And from that moment on he seized each and every opportunity life gave him.  Undoubtedly the initial seeds for Alex Von Trentini as we see him today were sown.

Tell us the story behind Alex von Trentini Salon?

After his graduation his talent did not go unnoticed and he was recruited to teach at his hair training college.  He did this for a few years whilst simultaneously working to learn all aspects of what it takes to run a business and salon.  Finally, at age 30 he decided it was time for the next step.  Meaning it was time for him to run his own show!  Serendipitous events led to finding a location and the lease being signed before the contract was even cold off the press.

Next, the location was completely gutted and in its place stood his vision!  And in 2012 Alex Von Trentini the Salon opened its doors for the first time.

What and who inspires you?

No one thing or one person inspires Alex.  Instead, he draws inspiration from everywhere and everything!  From his travels, to nature, to the online world to the everyday things and people you see on the street.  From the mundane to the exciting his mind is always assimilating always seeking and always open!

How would you best describe your work and creative process?

Classic, timeless with a modern twist.

Of course, as his catchphrase says “We see our clients all the same: very individually”.  Meaning that he is not rigid in his approach.  The client, their personality, their occupation the client as a whole need to be considered when creating a look.  He further goes on to say that not all of his work is vogue covers and magazine spreads but rather ordinary people like you and me.  People who need a style that makes them feel confident, gorgeous and most importantly that they can manage and maintain when they leave his chair!

How would you describe your Management Style?

Reflecting, he says that this has been a learning curve and an evolution.  And one that has definitely not always been easy.  However, after all the ups and downs and highs and lows it fundamentally comes down to one thing, TRUST.  Everything is fostered through trust. As well as a willingness to allow his staff to thrive in an environment that strives for perfection but not at the expense of creativity or fear of failure.

All this is confirmed when I talk to members of his team.  His team is an eclectic mix of personalities with one underlying commonality, the sheer love and enjoyment they get from working with ‘Alex von Trentini’.  Moreover, the energy, drive and belief he embodies transmits to everything and everyone.

Furthermore, he has a core group, his inner circle, whom he trusts implicitly!  Because with the celebrity status he has acquired comes exposure and more opportunity.  And it is because of this inner circle that he is able to fully embrace and take advantage of all opportunities that come his way.

What’s the next challenge for Alex von Trentini?

As mentioned previously, the salon has twice been awarded Best Salon in Germany!  And he’s hairstylist to the stars!  What’s next?

It’s fair to say that in the past few years, his priorities have ‘broadened’.  As the father to two young boys and another bundle on the way, family is a huge priority!  And he doesn’t want to waste a minute.

Ever humble, his passion, along with hair is to continue to nurture and teach.  In particular to help elevate those within his profession and those looking to break in.  Keep your eyes peeled for more on this in the years to come.

And of course, there is the Cannes Film Festival, Berlin and Paris Fashion Week where he is amongst the sought-after hairstylists to keep him busy!

Can you talk a little about your partnership with Le Bal?

One is chosen to partner!  And it is no small feat to be welcomed into the fold and be amongst le Bal’s most valued partners.

For those who haven’t heard of le Bal here’s a little insight.  Once upon a time, the débutante ball was the ultimate event on any young ladies’ calendar.  It was at this important event that young ladies were introduced into society.  This tradition has long since disappeared.  However, in 1994, Ophélie Renouard invented a modern version that she named “le Bal”.  An incredibly prestigious event with its purpose is to raise money for Charities to help young women.

And so it is that all hair requirements for not only the final event but all the magazine cover shoots, press and events leading up to the final event lie on the shoulders of Alex Von Trentini and his team.

So in closing all I have to say is that Alex von Trentini along with his team are an absolute delight!  And anyone looking for the ultimate hairdressing experience need only head into Wiesbaden to get it!

Best Coffee near me

Best Coffee in Frankfurt

‘Where to find the best coffee!?’  This is a question I need answered without delay anywhere I go!  And whether I’m visiting for the weekend or living in a city for the foreseeable future I need a caffeine oasis!  And pronto!

And so for those of you like me, where coffee and caffeine sustains you through life here’s the low down.  Also I’ve divided it by neighbourhood to make it easier.

Best coffee shops in and around Frankfurt by area

Nordend

‘WE SPEAK GOOD COFFEE’ and they certainly do!

Previously found on Eckenheimer Landstraße you will now find them solely on Bornwiesenweg.  However wherever they choose to hang their ‘hat’ you are always guaranteed great coffee!  Oh and in addition to good coffee they also have amazing cakes, hearty breakfasts and delicious lunches.  Vegan options available too!

Where to find them:  Bornwiesenweg 4 and Eckenheimer Landstraße 70

We Recommend: Breakfast (we have thing for smashed avocado on toast topped with an egg)

Good to know:  You can order takeaway online (so clever and convenient!)

Located on a beautiful tree-lined street, this cafe is a favourite with the locals, on weekdays it could double ‘as mummy central’. Café No. 48 is not only welcoming but also perfect for a quick morning coffee or an outing with the family.

So whilst the coffee shop remains closed and can only offer takeaway, walk your coffee down the drag to  2nd Home.   2nd Home has beautiful home wear and all sorts of other irresistible things!  With all the time we spending at home makes sense to brighten it up and add an accessory or two.

Where to find them:  Rotlintstraße 48

We Recommend: Avocado and feta smash on brown bread topped with poached eggs, just thinking about it makes me hungry!

Lucille Kaffeehaus is a serene cafe with a beautiful interior and an excellent menu. It is ideal for breakfast and lunch. And, with an old-school record store right next door, what’s not to love?

Where to find them: Friedberger Landstraße 100

Good to know:  Thursday and Friday are Tapa’s Day with cocktails from the bar.

Suppose we were to describe it in one word – Whimsical!  And in the best sense of the word!  A Coffee Shop That Will Almost Certainly Take You Down the Rabbit Hole.  From the wonderfully obtuse opening time of four minutes before nine and the elaborate dried flower arrangements dotted around the coffee shop to the ice cream squeezed out an ‘espresso machine’!  It’s safe to say that Ngoc Nguyen and Quynh Anh Nguyen, the owners, have created a little bit of magic on the streets of Nordend.

Good to know:
  • Look out for a large white rabbit with a giant pocket watch mumbling to himself
  • Cash only
  • Viervorneun Location

Altstadt/Innerstadt

A young coffee roasting company who have made themselves a big name!  They roast all their own coffee at their premises in Sachsenhausen as well as supply many local cafes.

They tend to favour light roasts, as it allows them to experience the full complexity of the different origins. Having said that they do have a selection of darker roasts in their Specialty Coffee range for fans of more classic and tart coffee beans.

Where to find them:  Markt 22 (Neue Altstadt) and Friedberger Landstraße 86

Good to know:  The Cafe am Campus is open again at the University

As well as holding a special place in our hearts The Holy Cross Brewing Company serves phenomenal coffee!  They source interesting coffees so pick up a bag to take home with you!

Where to find them:  Fahrgasse 7

A newcomer to the Frankfurt coffee scene with a big emphasis on coffee origins and interesting blends.

Where to find them:  Fahrgasse 23

Good to know:  The freshly baked cinnamon rolls, AMAZING!!  Freshly baked on a Friday get there early, they sell out quickly.  Also remember you walked there right? So you totally deserve one!

From the streets of the old Aldstadt take a step inside a world of perfect French Japanese fusion and be delighted.  Chandeliers hang from the ceiling, enormous mirrors hang from the walls and antique tables and chairs invite you to sit (though of course you can’t at present).  Opulence and grandeur ooze from the walls and pastries and cakes descend from the bakery!

Where to find them:  Braubachstraße 24

We Recommend:  The Matcha Latte

Sachsenhausen

Retablo Speciality Coffee is a newcomer to the speciality coffee scene!  And a newcomer to a quiet corner in Sachsenhausen.  Without a doubt though it is a must visit!  Till is not only delightful to chat too but knows his flat white from his cappuccino 😜

Where to find them:  Schifferstraße 12, 60594 Frankfurt am Main

Cafe Under Pressure owner Sven Wörth has an extensive history in coffee and as a barista!  Undoubtedly 4th place in the German Barista Championship in Berlin is a mammoth achievement!

Every aspect of his coffee haven is made with love. The entire interior was built by Sven himself (he left no detail to chance) and let us just say in our opinion it looks awesome!

If you’re up for a wonderful piece of homemade banana bread, an excellent flat white and a good chat with Sven himself, head on over. You won’t be disappointed.

Where to find them: Große Rittergasse 20, 60594 Frankfurt am Main

We recommend:  definitely try the banana bread

coffee shop

Bornheim and Ostend

It might be easy to dismiss Cafe Maingold as it sits right at the beginning of Zeil.  However, it’s right next to the park and has a lovely area for outside seating when the weather is warm. Walk inside and you’re time warped back to the 1940’s with vintage wallpaper, mixed matched vintage tables and gold framed doors.

Where to find them:  Zeil 1

When your chai latte arrives with a strainer you know you’ve hit the jackpot!!!  None of that teabag nonsense 😜

Where to find them: Hanauer Landstraße 82

We recommend:  the chai latte

Good to know:  they have a fairly extensive ‘to go menu’

On the slightly less ‘crazy’ side of Zeil close to Bornheim you’ll find Try Frankfurt!  The girls there are so super friendly and they have very yummy sandwiches all made fresh right there!

Where to find them:  Zeil 5

If you happen to be one of the guardians of the Euro (thankless job we imagine)or visiting them, then caffeine is necessary!  And Copper Bay is not only the perfect spot for a caffeine shot but also good nutritious food!

Where to find them: Sonnemannstraße 53, 60314 Frankfurt am Main

Europaviertel/Bockenheim

Frida’s is the quintessential coffee shop on the streets of Bockenheim!

Their mission was to create a great place for body, soul and encounters. Bockenheim is so diverse and so are Frida’s patrons. The district is permeated by different cultures and social classes and they want to create the same diversity in their café.

Their beans are currently roasted in Nürnberg. Their standards are for the coffee beans to be specialty coffee.  Ideally lighter roasts but lately there have been some roasters roasting a little darker than average specialty coffees without the coffee losing its complex flavour. The scene is always developing and experimenting.  And with it so does the coffee they serve at Frida’s

Where to find them: Leipziger Str. 108, 60487 Frankfurt am Main

Good to know:  their house speciality is diversity

Cafe Croquant is a stones throw away from where I live and often I have to resist the urge to head over and buy all their croissants!  Still, I’ll buy four for the family and ‘accidentally’ eat them all!

Now for the more discerning breakfast eater, their menu is phenomenal!  Along with the bakery they have avocado, smoked salmon, Parma ham, Camembert, goats cheese!  The platters that are so beautifully constructed that you almost don’t want to eat what on them!

Where to find them:  Europa-Allee 77, 60486 Frankfurt am Main

Good to know:  their breakfast is phenomenal!  During the week their is no need to pre-order, however, weekends please do so the night before!

A truly wonderful new addition to the streets of Europaviertel!  As many might say, Europaviertel may lack a little character and warmth, but Paul and Tims does not!  The owner, Tim Pauland, is all about community and warmth, so if you are in the vicinity (or not), definitely pop in for a chat and a coffee!  Amidst bustling streets and modern architecture, a delightful new coffee shop has emerged.

Janice Henry

A little insight through a few labels life has ‘given’ me! Also, no one label is more important than another I might add. So here it goes, boy mum, wife, friend, yogi, photographer, banker, coffee addict, global citizen, travel enthusiast, entrepreneur and writer!

Niki de saint Phalle exhibition at schirn

“Niki de Saint Phalle” exhibition at Schirn

“Niki de Saint Phalle” exhibition at Schirn is in our opinion alluring, captivating and a beautiful illustration of the artists career.  A career that was prematurely brought to an end by emphysema which almost certainly was a result of her prolific use of toxic materials in many of her works.

The Schirn takes you on a journey through the evolution of the artist and thus the woman behind the ‘artist’.  De Saint Phalle was self taught artist and grappled with different ways of self expression experimenting with a variety of materials and techniques.  One could perhaps argue in attempt to purge and self heal.

Who is Niki de Saint Phalle?

Saint Phalle is one of the late twentieth century’s great creative personalities she bravely forged the way for feminism. Undoubtedly a long long time before it was in vogue to do or the ‘me too’ movement was born.

Born near Paris in 1930, to a French father and an American mother.  However, after her father’s finance company failed they moved to America.  And whilst de Saint Phalle came from a background of privilege this could not protect her from trauma and violence.  Sexually assaulted by her father at age 11 he is often depicted in her works as dragon or reptile and forms the object of much of her anger and rage.

She describes herself as a devouring mother. Devouring a variety of influences from Giotto, early Siennese paintings, Douanier Rousseau, Mexican and Indian temples, to Picasso and Bosch and Arcimboldo.  And after feasting and absorbing the work of all these great influences the child that is born is Niki.

Niki de saint Phalle
Niki de saint Phalle
Niki de saint Phalle

The Exhibition

The Schirn presents a comprehensive exhibition exhibiting around 100 of the artists work and gives and overview of all the phases of her career which spanned five decades.  The evolution of the artist is both dramatic and simultaneously subtle.  Moving from destruction, anger and often monochromatic to creation on an enormous scale, playful and kaleidoscopic.

And whilst it was the Nanas that gained her attention and fame, her earlier works are as important and give an insight into the artists journey and creative process.

The exhibition runs until MAY 21st and we highly recommend you make your way to see it before it ends.

Rotablo Speciality Coffee

Retablo Speciality Coffee

On a quiet corner in Sachsenhausen now sits Retablo Speciality Coffee, an absolute oasis for any speciality coffee seeker!

We visit during the soft opening only a few short days after the doors open for business.  And, already, there is a steady and continuous flow of eager coffee seekers waiting to be delighted and caffeinated by Tills charms and coffee.

The Story behind Retablo Coffee

In our opinion, a quote by seventeenth-century English author John Donne sums up the Retablo Speciality Coffee story beautifully.

‘No man is an island, entire of itself.’

Till Benner is the face and heart behind Retablo Speciality Coffee!  Without a doubt, this speciality coffee shop dream was his first!  However, many hands helped make his dream a reality!  From angel investors to landlords sent by the ‘gods’ and friends who flock to support him, it was a collective effort.  And whilst he may appear to stand behind the coffee bar alone, he most certainly is not alone in his journey!

What’s behind the name?

’Retablo’ comes from the Latin retro-tabula, meaning “behind the altar”.  And Till, together with the architects, felt that the already existing archers and shapes within the build made this a fitting name!  And at the risk of sounding blasphemous, we couldn’t think of a more perfect ‘substance’ to ‘worship’.

The Vibe

Simplicity, Innovative design and Quality lie at the heart of the cafe.

Retablo Speciality Coffee embraces strong core values aiming not only to serve its new local community but also to help it flourish!   The attention to detail is admirable, from the selection of local coffee roasteries to the thoughtful consideration of what opening hours would best serve the community.

Upstairs is very cleverly designed by architects Aberja to maximise the space entirely.  Firstly, gorgeous high ceilings create a feeling of space, allowing the large windows to flood the upper area with natural light!  Secondly, to boost seating options, one wall plays host to ‘grandstand’ seating, albeit with only two rows; it serves its purpose beautifully!  Thirdly, and we think it’s genius!  Small tables sit on running gears (think sliding doors), allowing them to slide side to side and adjust to your party size!  Last but definitely not least!  The semi-circle coffee bar design creates additional standing space, allowing customers to congregate a little longer than they might at a traditional, narrow, elongated coffee bar.

Furthermore, the granite countertop wooden floor and overall muted colour palette are punctuated with bright pops of canary yellow, adding the perfect amount of playfulness to the overall look!

Moving downstairs, the space is being converted into an event space, so stay tuned for more information on this!

Last but definitely not least, THE COFFEE

Till is no stranger to the coffee world!  Having been fully immersed in the coffee industry for the past ten years, Till has experience and then some!  He also has a clear vision of how he hopes to showcase not just one or two local German coffee roasteries but as many as he feels fit with his concept.

What can you ALWAYS expect to find at Retablo?

Well, you can always expect to find a DARK ROAST and a LIGHT ROAST along with a particular profile.

What can you expect NOT to find at Retablo?

A static lineup of German Coffee Roasteries!  For the most part, Till aims to have a ‘shake up’ every 6-8 weeks, showcasing different coffee roasteries from all across Germany!  And we say bring it on!

Good to know:
  • Want an inside scoop?  The speciality is not on the menu!  Ristretto with milk 😉
  • Fancy a glass of wine or beer?  That’s on the menu too!
  • Easy parking at Parkhaus Alt-Sachsenhausen

Best Wine Tour

Best Wine Tour around Frankfurt

So it’s true that when one thinks of Germany wine is not the first thing that jumps to mind!  But it’s a real shame!  Because Germany has some exceptional wines to offer.  From refreshing mineral-tinged Rieslings, aromatic Spätburgunders (Pinot Noir), and bright sparklings to sweet dessert wines there is plenty to taste.  Now the key, to finding and tasting these delicious German wines is selecting a great tour operator.  And in our opinion, that wine tour operator is BottleStops.

Why use a Wine Tour operator?

In short,  whilst there is plenty available to taste and try it’s not particularly easy to navigate.  Unlike California, South Africa, Australia or Italy which are completely geared toward the wine tourist, Germany is still ‘familiarising’ themselves with the concept.  Even as a German speaker, which we are not, it is difficult to navigate the terrain.

Who is BottleStops?

Behind this thoroughly well-oiled wine tour machine lies Jérôme Hainz.

The story goes that whilst living and working in Asia for many years, Jérôme got tired of the narrative that Germany only had Bratwurst to offer.  As a result, he tasked himself with learning all he could about what his homeland had to offer in food and ultimately wine!  This coupled with his passion for history and geography made the wine industry a perfect melting pot for all his interests to come together.  And so on returning to live in Germany in 2017 BottleStops tours and tastings was born.

In addition to learning about wine BottleStops also gives you gentle immersion in German history and geography.  Explaining how Germany got its start in winemaking.  And how it’s possible that Germany the world’s most northern wine-making region is able to make wine! And it is because of all this that BottleStops wine tours are enriching on so many levels!

Wine Tour with Bottlestops

So recently we had the absolute pleasure of sipping our way through the German winelands with BottleStops.  And boy did we have fun!!  Jérôme is a natural storyteller with the ability to explain historical and geographical facts in a manner that’s simple and easy to digest!   So not only did we learn a whole bunch about wine and its history but we also learnt about the region and its history too!

Stop 1:  Kloster Eberbach

After being picked up from the station our wine tour began at the historical Kloster Eberbach.  Not only is Kloster Eberbach a feast for the eyes but it also forms the foundation of much of the wine-making industry in Germany.  After exploring the monastery with almost 900 years of history below our feet and above our head we were left under no illusions that wine was/is a prominent feature at the estate.  Next, it was onto the tasting room, bright and airy with plenty of options to taste.   And it was here that we had our first lesson in just how varied Riesling can be.  Not only from producer to producer but within a single producer itself.

Stop 2 with lunch: Vinothek RheinWeinWelt

Next up was a yummy lunch and of course more tastings at Vinothek Rheinweinwelt. For want of a better description, it’s a dispensary of sorts for wines. Now whilst we absolutely love the concept!  Essentially you can taste different wines from over 80 wine makers from all across the wine regions under one roof.  And as amazing as this sounds it can be a little intimidating if you are unfamiliar with German wine.  Another good reason to choose Bottlestops!

So how does it work?   First, pay for the number of tastings you’d like and in exchange you receive tokens to take into a tasting dispensary.  Once armed with your tokens head into the tasting area.  Here you find 7 historic brandy tanks that each house winemakers, their wines and the wine dispensers.  Next, choose the wine you’d like to taste and hold your glass under the dispenser spout before popping your token in.  And voila a perfectly measured 20ml tasting dispensers into your glass!

Stop 3:  Bibo Runge

Our final stop was at Bibo Runge weingut!  And this was the perfect way to end our tour!  Bibo Runge is a relatively new and small local producer in Oestrich-Winkel doing innovative and exciting wine-making!

What are the typical Wine Tours that Bottlestops offer?

Day Tours

Typically BottleStops tours will begin with pick up in Mainz at the main train station.  Of course, pick-up can be arranged in Frankfurt for an additional charge.  From there you are whisked away in the BottleStops van into wine country to explore and taste what the German vines have to offer.  In general the tour 6 hours from start to finish with winery visits and a stop for lunch.  Also, the tours have a nice mix of large historical estates, small newer estates and everything in between to give a diverse view of the German Winelands.

Walking Tours

This is a 1.5-hour wine tasting in Mainz.  Also, these tend to be offered exclusively for small groups in a charming wine boutique in the heart of the old town.  Like with the day tours local wine culture, history and geography of the region are included making it a well-rounded experience.  Furthermore, the wines are paired with typical local snacks.  It’s worth noting that the tasting is offered in a very relaxed manner with no formal seating arranged.

Private Tours

If you have a special occasion or can’t find exactly what you looking for BottleStops is happy to work with you and tailor a tour to your needs.

To summarise a wine tour with BottleStops is more than just a wine tour!  It’s the opportunity to learn, meet new people and get out and about in one of the lesser-known wine regions of the world.  So what are you waiting for book now and sip your way along the Rhine!  Cheers!

Lodge Steakhouse

Lodge Steakhouse

If you’ve ever wanted to go on an African Safari but have never had the opportunity then Lodge Steakhouse may be the smallest of insights of what it’s like.  Ok, yes, you are going to need to really use your imagination but only for the Africa bit, the steakhouse is absolutely on point!!!  Catch animals, the likes of giraffe, zebra and wildebeest grazing in of front you while you enjoy your meal. And on clear day you can catch a glimpse of the Frankfurt skyline in the distance.

The Setting of Lodge Steakhouse

Lodge Steakhouse is perched up overlooking the Opel Zoo!  Large glass panelled walls surround the restaurant on 3 sides allowing for two things to happen.  Firstly, gorgeous natural light filters through and brightens the space.  Secondly, it allows a connection of outdoors with indoors. Giving customers the opportunity to see Giraffe, zebra and wildebeest grazing out in front of the restaurant on any given day.  Of course the animals are sensitive to weather and can’t always be guaranteed.

Inside the use of natural materials and colour scheme throughout the furniture and decor choices deepens the similarities with nature.   And the first thing you notice as you walk in, other than the view, is the subtle but very definite smell of leather and wood.  Secondly, the deep mahogany vaulted ceiling contrasts beautifully with the honey comb coloured leather seating and flooring creating an almost ethereal glow in the space.  To finish it off, crisp white linen table clothes and napkins along with minimalistic table settings give the restaurant an elegant and chic look and feel.   Also, during the summer months at the back of the restaurant large doors open up onto a large terrace.  Here customers can sit with a cocktail watching the sun set and listen to the sounds.  Moreover, the birds and frogs that are attracted by the small pond down below.

The Vibe

A ‘family’ affair.  And when we say family, we mean friends that become family.  Importantly this refers to not only to their staff but their customers too, plenty of whom have become regulars over the years.  Speaking with Lodge, they emphasised the importance of welcoming customers as though they are welcoming them into their own home.  Not only do they want them to feel happy and relaxed but well taken care of too.

The Menu and Wine List

Filet Mignon.  Ribeye.  New York Strip.  Sirloin.  T-bone.

If we being perfectly honest we’d be ok if that was the entire menu!  However, we are fully aware that for a balance meal one needs, potatoes.  Obviously we kidding, but only about what makes a balanced meal and highly recommend you try the truffle fries!!

It’s a steakhouse and therefore it should come as no surprise that the meat is the hero of the dish.  Meaning all sides are served separately allowing the hero to be beautifully presented, front and centre!  It’s also worth mentioning that whilst it is a steakhouse there are also vegetarian and vegan options.

For the most part the bulk of the menu remains largely unchanging they do freshen it up from time to time.  In particular asparagus is a firm favourite in Germany and therefore makes an appearance when it’s in season.  Also the soup of the day is frequently ‘spiced’ up!

Undoubtedly the wine list is impressive!  And the ‘meaty’ leather bound book incorporating over 145 different wines both regional and international makes the perusing all the more enjoyable.  Notably, there should be something to suit every palette and more importantly every dish!

Good to know

  • It is perfect for corporate or private events as the restaurant can be sectioned to the size of your party
  • There is no separate kids menu.  However, there are plenty of options that are kid friendly.  For example the chicken breast, burgers and/or fries
  • Breakfast is served on week days until 11:30am
  • Game is not served on the menu so please do not expect to find crocodile, venison or ostrich
  • Also we recommend making a reservation at least 4/5 days prior if visiting on Friday/Saturday
  • Last but by no means last my steak was cooked to absolute perfection, medium rare more on the rare side!  Tender and juicy!!

Benefits of a Boutique Fitness Studios in Frankfurt

Firstly, it often requires far less ‘know-how’ than your regular gym.  Meaning, that you have an instructor who will guide you through a balanced well thought out program.  Often at the gym, we have a tendency to do the same workout year in and year out and wonder why we no longer see results.  Secondly, if you find the gym intimidating, particularly as a woman, a boutique fitness studio is a great way to find your feet and build confidence.  Thirdly, community.  Meeting friends and working out together is often a great motivator and a way of staying accountable.  And last but not least it is a great way to keep things interesting and varied.  Mix and match try them all!

Best Boutique Fitness Studios in Frankfurt

In the Studios we will list below we try to cover a variety of fitness disciplines.  Hopefully, there is something for everyone!  However, in our opinion, it’s definitely worth trying them all!  Each brings something unique and different to the table and makes your workout anything but boring!

Corelab

Corelab is an innovative and exciting new way to workout.  Essentially it’s a fusion of traditional resistance and strength training with pilates-inspired flexibility and balance, albeit with a light dusting of ingenuity.

Owner Gloria Cadavid, spent months designing the power reformer or station that the workout is performed on!  Infusing traditional pilates with resistance and strength training to create an intense burn that you may feel for days!!  The Boutique Fitness Studio has a coffee bar where you can grab a protein shake or hang out with friends and have a coffee afterwards.

the pilates studio – Mat and Equipment Pilates Classes

the pilates studio in Frankfurt is the perfect haven for Pilates enthusiasts who love the traditional art form that Joseph Pilates created.  Beautifully central the studio is located a stone’s throw from the Eschenheimer Tor.  Inside you will find two separate studios for teaching.  One houses the pilates towers where many of the group classes are taught as well as the mat classes.  Whilst the other has 2 reformers, the Cadillac, the chair, baby chair and high chair for smaller and private classes.

Furthermore, all teachers are expected to undergo training in the original Pilates method, a gruelling and rigorous process involving over 700 hours.  Finally, Pilates is the perfect way to reconnect with your core, your powerhouse and increase your flexibility and strength!

Revival Pole Fitness – Pole Dancing

Revival Pole Fitness is owned and run by Michelle Polansky who has lived and taught all around the world!  And as a result of this global citizen identity, it was important to Michelle that the studio be a safe space for women.  A safe space where women regardless of culture or background could express themselves!  A space to connect, to move to gain strength in not only the physical sense but the mental too!

Michelle runs the classes in a beautiful and relaxed manner.   And in an environment where many may initially feel a little intimidated or insecure this is vitally important!  The classes are fun and empowering and in our opinion something everyone should try at least once in their lifetime.

Pilates with Dorita

Pilates with Dorita is the perfect Boutique Fitness Studio if you hoping to workout in the comfort of your own home.  Dorita offers Pilates mat classes via Zoom which is perfect for those who are travelling or really pushed for time and can’t get to the studio.  Having said that, Dorita also has a small studio where she offers private classes on the pilates reformer or on the mat with equipment.  In our opinion, it’s an incredibly reasonable way to experience the best mat Pilates has to offer.

English Yoga Meet-Up

Okay, so technically this isn’t a studio it’s more like a pop-up!  And English Yoga Meet Up have classes all around the city and during summer offers classes outside.  One of the things about practising yoga with English Yoga Meet Up is the enormous focus that Solveig places on community.  Meaning you will always feel welcomed and hopefully meet like-minded people.

Pilates Infused – Pilates Group Reformer Classes

Last but definitely not least on our list is Pilates Infused.  Bringing a little LA flavour to the Frankfurt hum drum.  One of Frankfurt’s first group reformer class studios.  At Pilates Infused you can expect to find the classes infused with fun, high-energy music and step away from the classical approach.  And, having said that what we love even more about the studio is they are a concept studio.  Meaning, that they not only have the Pilates studio but also Ehrlich Grun a cafe where you can gather with friends after a workout and nourish your body and mind!  Also, they do a mean Bullet Proof Coffee!!

So there you have it!  Our opinion of some of the Best Boutique Fitness Studios in Frankfurt.  Worth noting you no longer have an excuse to sit at home, unless you practicing over Zoom with Dorita that is!  Have fun and let us know your favourite.

Pole Dancing in Frankfurt

Pole Dancing in Frankfurt with Revival Pole

Pole dancing in Frankfurt.  Wow what a fun and exhilarating experience!!  Now before anyone has a coronary and begins imagining a smoky, low lit gentleman’s bar with scantily clad women gyrating on poles this was anything but that!  However, there is no judgement here if that’s your thing!  But I do want to be clear that Pole dancing is an art form or sport that you make your own.  Meaning, you like sexy?  Make it sexy.  And if you like it as a sport and fitness experience then make it athletic and strength building!  But remember, leave all judgments and expectations at the door.

The Story Behind Revival Pole Fitness

We love stories where life seems to play out exactly as it should.  Where happy ‘accidents’ and serendipitous moments occur and new passions are discovered when you least expect them.  And in our opinion Michelle Polansky introduction to pole dancing was one such event.  As a child Michelle was a passionate gymnast, loving challenging her body with the endless ‘tricks’ gymnastics demands of you.

However, one summer whilst visiting her sister in South Beach she caught the eye of a stranger whilst practising  aerial silks.  And it was this stranger who recommend that she might try and enjoy pole dancing!  Momentarily preconceived ideas filled her head but being the adventurous spirit she is she pushed them aside and off she went to her first pole class!  Unfortunately it was only a brief soirée with the pole initially as life had other plans for her and she headed to South America with the Peace Corps.

However, there was no doubt that the pole dancing bug had bitten and for years to come she would practise and slowly learn the art of pole dancing!  And it was would be a few years yet before she would find her way to Argentina where she would receive her certification.

The Pole Dancing Studio and Vibe

Having lived and worked teaching pole dancing in a studio in Egypt it was clear to Michelle what she wanted for her studio.  A safe space where women regardless of culture or backgrounds could express themselves!  A space to connect, to move to gain strength in not only the physical sense but the mental too!

Michelle is a wonderful teacher and teaches in such a way that she makes the pole accessible to everyone.  Broken down step by step in a relaxed environment with a wicked playlist you’ll find yourself achieving things that you didn’t think you would.  And trust me, I’ve tried pole dancing before and that experience must have resembled an uncooked piece of spaghetti noodle trying to wrap itself around a pole 😂.

Finally keeping the classes small and intimate is important to Michelle.  For this reason she limited the number of poles to 4 and limited the maximum number of students to 6 per class.

More than just Pole Dancing

It’s worth noting that Michelle offers more than just pole dancing classes!  As well as the pole classes she offers handstand and stretching and conditioning classes!  So if you not quite ready to swing round a pole, although we highly highly recommend it, then try the other classes.  For these classes she has up to 8 students per class.

Good to know

  • The pole dancing studio is situated in Niederrad
  • Sign up for a trial class and if you enjoy it and sign up to the intro course you will receive the trial class amount discounted
  • Michelle is a natural teacher and will have you achieving things you didn’t think you could

Corelab in Frankfurt

Corelab in Frankfurt, an exciting & innovative workout

Corelab in Frankfurt is an exciting and totally innovative way to workout!  And it’s quite unlike anything else that I have tried before.  In short it’s a fusion of traditional resistance and strength training with pilates inspired flexibility and balance albeit with a light dusting of ingenuity.

The Corelab Vibe and Concept

’Commit to yourself’ and find your tribe!

Absolutely, Corelab is about fitness, but, it is not only about fitness it is also about community.  Moreover it is about creating a space where like minded people meet and work towards their goals with the help of trained and motivated coaches.

The Vibe

Modern and innovative

Undoubtedly it is the army of black and gleaming meticulously designed machines that first command your attention as you enter the studio.  Quietly they lie in wait ready to push you to your limits. Next the mirrors, much of which line the wall space increasing the feeling of space and intensity.  Finally the dark carpets and walls are punctuated by neon signage and strobe like lighting and the commitment wall.  And it is at the commitment wall that state your intentions for all to see and to keep you accountable.

The Corelab Concept

As previously mentioned, the workout is a fusion of strength and resistance training, pilates inspired flexibility and balance all performed on a moving ‘station’ with resistance springs, cables and some free weights.  The workout methodology is designed to give you a balanced full body workout in just 50 minutes.  To summarise the class targets all areas of the body using various exercises that are performed in predominantly 1 minute intervals.  It is worth noting that all exercises can be modified or amplified depending on each individuals ability and fitness level.

The Corelab Station/Machine

Impressively, the Corelab station/machine was designed in-house by Gloria herself and manufactured in Germany.  And whilst the station has taken some inspiration from the pilates reformer don’t be fooled into thinking that this is anything like a typical pilates class.  Importantly, the station was designed by Gloria to accommodate progressive overload to build strength and impressively boasts up to 105kg’s of resistance.

The Story behind Corelab in Frankfurt

Gloria Cadavid Is the driving force behind Corelab in Frankfurt!  And let me tell you she most certainly is a  force in the best way.  Driven, passionate and incredibly innovative!  Gloria was born in Colombia but moved to the United States at a young age where she lived throughout her schooling and into her career.

After achieving her masters in Environmental Science at Columbia she moved to Washington DC.  And it was there in 2015, that she truly uncovered another passion and dream, FITNESS.  More specifically, she discovered the fitness concept that inspired what we now see as Corelab in Frankfurt today.  However, it would be a number of years before that dream would become reality.

After accepting a fellowship with The Robert Bosch Foundation she moved to Munich in 2018 and then to Frankfurt at the end of 2021.  And finally it was in Frankfurt that Corelab Studio finally came to fruition and opened its doors in March 2023.

Good to know

  • Corelab in Frankfurt have their own app which makes payment, timetable referencing and booking classes a breeze
  • They have bathrooms onsite fully equipped with hairdryers, straighteners and basic toiletry products making a workout before, during or after easy!
  • Lockers make it easy to lock away valuables while you sweat it up in the studio
  • Slip proof socks are recommended and can be bought at the studio
  • If you want to feel the BURN then this is the workout for you!  You are guaranteed to feel muscles you didn’t realise you had!

Pilates Studio in Frankfurt

the pilates studio in Frankfurt

the pilates studio in Frankfurt is the perfect haven for pilates enthusiasts who love the traditional art form that Joseph Pilates created. Pilates is the perfect way to reconnect with your core, your powerhouse and increase your flexibility and strength!  Also it is conveniently central and located not even two minutes from the Eschenheimer Tor.

The Story Behind the pilates studio in Frankfurt

Lucy Hickey is the brains and the brawn behind The Pilates Studio.  Born in Dublin, dance and movement formed the foundation of Lucy’s life from a very young age.  To illustrate, her first professional training saw her move to Russia at the tender age of 14.  Following a number of years of living and working all over the world it was a contract with ‘Phantom of the Opera’ in Stuttgart that brought Lucy to Germany in 2003.  Furthermore, it was in Stuttgart that she met not only her Pilates mentor, Davorka Kulenovic but also her husband.  Over the next 8 years as with dance Lucy tirelessly threw herself into Pilates learning, training and teaching!  Finally, in 2016 Lucy took the leap and opened her very own pilates studio in Frankfurt.

Ethos and Training

Lucy trained with Davorka Kulenovic owner of Pilates New York in Stuttgart.  Kulenovic is a student of Romana Kryzanowska protégé of Joseph Pilates who was entrusted with continuing his method. Training with Davorka in the original Pilates method was incredibly rigorous, with over 700 hours of observation, training and teaching.

Furthermore, all teachers employed with the pilates studio are expected to have completed the same or similarly rigorous teacher trainings.

The Studio Vibe and Classes

Situated on the 2nd floor the decor is clean and minimalistic, allowing the teachers and the equipment to do all the ‘talking’.  There are two separate studios for teaching, one houses the pilates towers where the group classes are taught.  Whilst the other has 2 reformers, the Cadillac, the chair, baby chair and high chair for smaller and private classes. Finally, large windows line one wall in each studio making them light and airy.

One on One Private Classes

A class focused and tailored exactly to your needs.  Furthermore there is no better way to highlight weaknesses, or rather, imbalances in the body than with a private one on one class.  In these classes you have the opportunity to explore all forms of equipment namely the reformer, the Cadillac, chair, baby chair, high chair and barrel.  Also, it’s worth noting that they offer private one on one mat classes.

For me I was privileged to have a class with Lucy herself.  Her gorgeous lilting Irish accent masterfully guiding me through a wonderfully challenging pilates class!  Her cueing was absolutely on point and I loved how tactile she was when helping me make adjustments.

Group Tower Class

If you have never heard of a tower class you missing out and I would absolutely encourage you to try one*.  In essence it is based on traditional mat work but with the added intensity of using springs and the roll-down/push through bar to strengthen and stretch.  Also, classes are kept small with a maximum of 6 participants

Mat Classes

Predominantly the classes are held on site, however, the pilates studio does offer a few options for hybrid classes.  Meaning that some participants join via zoom, for this reason it is important to check what you sign up for.   Sometimes to spice things up and vary the classes they incorporate weights, towels or the Magic Circle.

Good to know

  • It is recommended to take a few private classes before joining any of the group equipment classes*
  • The tower classes are very popular and a phenomenal work out
  • We found the easiest and cheapest place to park is in My Zeil parkhaus.  Worth noting, if you park on level C or D it’s half the price of the first 2 levels ie €2 per hour rather than €4
  • The teaching staff come from multiple countries with English, Italian, Spanish and German being a few of the languages spoken.  However, please note classes are not conducted in all languages

Therapy for kids

Therapy for Kids with the Inspired Project

In my humble opinion ‘Kids are so resilient’ is a phrase that I hear far too often!  And yes, whilst that may be true it doesn’t mean that they are free of stress and emotions or that they adjust seamlessly to every situation thrown at them!  And honestly, the mental health cliff edge that the pandemic threw at us affected our little humans just as much as us grown up humans!  So perhaps you find yourself as a parent not sure where to turn or what to do when your little human is struggling!  And therapy for kids with the Inspired Project may be an option you would like to explore?

Who is behind the Inspired Project

Moriah-Jane Lorentz is a music therapist, theatre pedagogue, project manager, and performer. Originally from South Africa, she has been in Frankfurt since 2017. She graduated with a music therapy degree and a minor in drama and speech therapy facilitation.

Moriah-Jane has a natural and beautiful way with children that allows them to feel relaxed and heard in world where they may feel lost and out of control.  Kids walk out with a grin on their face, their shoulders a little tense and an excitement for the next session.

Therapy for kids with the Inspired Project How it Works

Moriah-Jane offers a variety of therapy options depending on your child’s age, needs and goals.  Some of therapy techniques she uses are stated below a brief description of each.

Music Therapy

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualised goals.  Moreover, it uses music therapeutically to address physical, psychological, cognitive, behavioural and/or social functioning. Because music therapy is a powerful and non-threatening medium, unique outcomes are possible. With young children, music therapy provides a unique variety of music experiences in an intentional and developmentally appropriate manner to effect changes in a child’s behaviour and facilitate the development of his/her communication, social/emotional, sensory-motor, and/or cognitive skills.

Play Therapy

Play therapy for kids is a form of psychotherapy and can be effective in helping children through emotional and mental issues. Children often use play to express themselves and navigate the world, and play therapy takes advantage of this. Also, play therapy is primarily used with children. However, it can also be used with adults. Furthermore, it is typically used with children who are aged between 3 and 12.

Play therapy is particularly beneficial for people who struggle with communicating and expressing themselves in a positive and healthy manner.  Namely these could include children with behavioral disorders or learning disabilities.

There has been some research into the effectiveness of play therapy on children with the following conditions:

  1. Autism
  2. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  3. Depression
  4. Anxiety disorders
  5. Post-traumatic stress disorder
  6. Physical and emotional trauma
  7. Sexual abuse
  8. Physical or emotional abuse

Creative Therapy

Creative therapy uses art forms — such as dance, drawing, or music — to help treat certain conditions. Trained therapists can administer creative therapy to help people experiencing various mental, emotional, and physical issues. Worth noting, creative therapy does not require a person to have any sort of artistic ability.

Good to know

  • She has worked mainly with children and youth on the Autism spectrum.
  • She is passionate about creating music, art and movement

STEAM Robotics and Coding

Robotics and Coding with Boston Education

Boston Education is an organisation that specialises in using STEAM activities to teach kids robotics and coding in Frankfurt.  I meet their CEO, Maja Vuksic, one Friday afternoon under the pergola at Cafe Croquant.  Admittedly I’m a little nervous to sit down and discuss Robotics and Coding I’m more a bang it till it works kinda girl, just kidding!

Two things strike me, her incredibly firm handshake when we meet (love it!) and as we chat her understated brilliance!  Having studied Physics and Neuroscience at Harvard and Columbia, she is nobodies fool!  But more than that, she doesn’t make me feel foolish as I ogle and have my jaw drop on more than one occasion as she talks!

So, if you going to put your precious humans under the tutorage and guidance of anyone I will shamelessly scream her name!

About Boston Education

Where can you find a Boston Education class?

English speaking therapists

Finding an English Speaking Therapist

We all aware that the COVID-19 pandemic has been raging for well over a year now!  However, under the surface another is silently brewing, a mental health pandemic.  A collective mental vulnerability is growing while we all focus on the virus that ravages the body.  For those of us living in foreign countries with a foreign language finding the right help is difficult.  In this article we try to provide some resources and direction for finding English speaking therapists and services.

Virtual vs in person Therapy

There’s a great book by Ryan Holiday called ‘The Obstacle is the Way’.  The book talks about how to turn adversity to advantage.  And perhaps the positive in this pandemic is that finding an English speaking therapist just went global, meaning your therapist doesn’t need to be local.  Having said that, some people might be more comfortable with in person therapy and that’s ok.

Frankfurt English speaking KIDS therapist

Finding an English Speaking Therapist

So, how does one go about finding and English speaking therapist?  Well, we have come across some great resources, directories if you will where you can narrow down the criteria you need.  For instance narrow down by location, language, in person, online and specific needs ie depression, anxiety, PTSD etc.

It’s Complicated

With the tag line ‘Life’s complicated.  Finding a therapist shouldn’t be’ It’s Complicated try to make the process as simple as possible.

How does it Work?

Life’s complicated is a directory and as such provides filters and search options ie

      • online vs in person
      • location
      • language
      • Also they have matching tool to match you with the right therapist

The therapist availability is provided and the ability to book online.

What does it Cost?

The cost is dependent on the therapist you choose.  Each therapist has a profile specifying their expertise and experience along with their rates.

Betterhelp

An online platform only, Betterhelp matches you with the right therapist based on your needs.  With over 19,000 counselors with different qualifications and areas of expertise you are bound to find a therapist right for you!

How does it Work?

Unlike It’s Complicated there is no option to find in person therapy or choose the therapist from a directory.  To clarify, first you fill in an online questionnaire providing general information on your current mental health and circumstances.  Second, you creat an account and specify your therapist requirements ie. gender, religious views and LGBQT expertise.  Finally, fill in your payment details and bobs your uncle 🙂

Along with individual therapy there are the options for couples and teen therapy too.  Also, if you not happy with your therapist you can be asked to be matched with another.

What does it Cost?

60 per week (charged every 4 weeks) – includes unlimited text, video, audio messaging and a weekly live session.  Alternatively, if you are not in a position to pay there is an option to apply for financial aid.

Frankfurt English speaking therapists

If you are looking specifically for an English speaking therapist in Frankfurt then the Angloinfo directory may be helpful.  Unlike the above two resources this is more basic directory with basic information and contact information provided.

Consider Coaching

Also good to bare in mind is coaching particularly if you not sold on traditional therapy.  Weighing up therapy vs coaching is also good option, perhaps one is more suited to your circumstances than the other.  These days there are so many options out there transformational coaching, coaching with neuro specific focus and business coaching are to name just a few that are available.

To summarise, finding the right English speaking therapist may be challenging but it’s not impossible!  The world may have shrunk in terms of travel options but it exploded in terms of virtual therapy and coaching options available.  So, don’t suffer in silence find someone, talk to someone and lets not let the mental health pandemic unexpectedly sucker punch us in the face

What Cooking Classes are on offer with Frankfurt for Cooks

Frankfurt for Cooks offers a variety of cooking classes and almost certainly there is something for everyone!

In-person Individual Classes

In these one on one classes everything is tailored exactly to want the client wants.  Right from what the individual is hoping to learn to how much time and resources the individual has available to invest.  To give a few examples of requests previously made by clients, how to make vegetables the hero of any dish.  Meaning how to make cooking vegetables more interesting, more flavourful and something that everyone is excited to eat (goodness knows anyone with kids has this challenge).  Or another is example is dishes that are great for batch cooking and freezing.

In-person Group Classes

This is a great way for a few friends to get together and share an experience whilst also learning!  And the best bit is you get to all sit down to eat together after all the cooking is done!

Online Cooking Classes

Like so many other services that made their way online this was as a result of the pandemic.  Nonetheless, Schmidt found online to be an incredibly efficient way for people to learn.  By setting up various cameras in her kitchen participants could see not only her but also her hands for instance to get ‘the whole picture’.  Cooking classes in this manner are also more cost effective.

Corporate Cooking Events

Team cooking events are a great way for instance to do team building.  However, Schmidt is open to whatever the corporate clients have in mind.

Frankfurt for Cooks!  Just meeting Anna fills you with a confidence that she knows what she’s doing!  And boy I need someone who not only knows what they doing but also loves a challenge.

So here’s the thing, I love to cook but I absolutely LOATHE to cook!  And honestly, I think this all comes down to the fact that I’ve never really learned how to cook, well.  As you may have realised I’m no Julia Childs!  And I didn’t have a mum who spent hours in the kitchen, well maybe she did but I was away at boarding school eating food that only helped to perfect my gag reflex.  Also, I’m not Italian so I didn’t have a Nona who learnt from her Nona who learnt from her Nona who learnt from….you see where I’m going with this right?

About Frankfurt for Cooks

Anna Schmidt was originally born in St Petersburg.  However, after studying English and German at the Language University in St Petersburg she decided to move to Berlin and study Finance.  Next, she moved to London where she worked as a Interest-rate Derivatives trader at Commerzbank.  And it was in London that she had her 3 beautiful girls, like almost anyone will tell you, kids change everything. Anna was no different, she realised she wanted/needed something different than what the trading floor offered.

Subsequently she decided to retrain as a chef and the rest as they say is history. Anna enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu  and spent the next 9 months intensively learning and honing her cooking skills!  After completing her qualification she decided to start a small cooking school offering a variety of cooking classes and tours educating anyone who wished to learn.

Of course as we all know nothing is forever and once again Germany came a knocking!  Shortly before Brexit, Anna’s husband was relocated to Frankfurt and after getting settled she once again decided to offer her cooking classes just as she had done in London.

Market Tours

Not only does Anna offer cooking classes but she also offers great market tours.  In these tours you get the opportunity to head directly to the smaller markets with her and learn what and what not to expect when buying fresh fish, meat and or produce.  From understanding what look for with the fresh fishes gills to knowing how to spot whether fish have been well handled she’ll pass on her know how.  Also, learn how to be inspired and what to look for when doing your weekly market shop.

Good to know

  • Her Social media (Instagram in particular) is full of wonderful tips
  • Schmidt does not offer catering
  • In our opinion this is the perfect gift for the woman/man who has everything

Pilates

Pilates with Dorita

Dorita knows first hand what it means to have pilates change your life!  Unimaginably she underwent spinal fusion at age 15 and from that moment on, movement would never look the same for her!  However through Pilates she found not only a practice to manage her ‘spinal limitations’ but a way of life.  So, with this in mind you will find practicing Pilates with Dorita is incredibly challenging (no excuses) but with a sensitivity that not all instructors innately have.

Also, it’s worth noting Dorita is vivacious, full of energy and very punctual!

The Story behind Pilates with Dorita Vardikou

Dorita Vardikou was born in Greece and it was when she was 8 she was diagnosed with scoliosis of her spine.  As previously mentioned at age 15 Dorita underwent spinal fusion surgery.  Moreover it was during the incredibly challenging journey of rehabilitation that introduced her to the Pilates method.  Furthermore, it was the kindness of an incredible pilates teacher and mentor who never made her to feel any different to anyone else when she practiced that she discovered incredible benefits of Pilates.  Finally it was as a direct result of seeing the impact Pilates made to her life that she decided to take the plunge and train as a teacher herself!

Dorita completed her qualification with Body Control Pilates in London.

Online Pilates with Dorita

Dorita had a thriving Pilates practice in London before moving to Frankfurt in August 2019.  And it was as result of so many of her regular clients in London wanting to continue that she made the decision to offer online classes.  Coupled with the Pandemic this was a sound decision and saw her online classes soar even more in popularity!  As a result of how well the online classes were received she has continued to offer them.

What makes Dorita’s Online Pilates Unique?

Firstly, she offers them via Zoom so that she can see clients body positioning as much as possible and correct and cue.  Secondly, as a result of the interactive nature of the classes she keeps them small!  Thirdly, her classes have a wonderful flow aspect to them.  Each movement seamlessly flows into the next.  Meaning, you never lose yourself in a mindless and repetitive movement because the class is continuously ‘influx’.  Finally, should you for any reason miss a class she offers you the opportunity to catch up by sending you a recording!

Private Reformer Pilates Classes

So whilst a large portion of Dorita’s classes will be done online she does offer private one on one reformer classes.  Reformer pilates is fantastic for challenging the whole body whilst being gentle on the joint and building core strength and improving posture.

To find out more about the private reformer classes please drop Dorita a message directly through her website!

Good to know

  • Whilst she offers predominantly online courses she is available for private classes on request
  • Her mat classes have a wonderful ‘flow’ aspect to them keeping you mentally engaged throughout the class
