Vif
Vif is a wonderfully quaint cafe on the streets of Westend. There is a welcoming vibe and it’s small enough to keep an intimate feel about it! The outside area in the summer months makes a great spot for small get togethers and they are also very welcoming of young children! They also hire out and cater small events… The food is organic and seasonal (as much as possible) and made with absolute heart! Pop in, you’re guaranteed a smile! Good to know:

Westend
Westend is a gloriously quiet neighbourhood in the heart of Frankfurt. With less hustle and bustle than that of its neighbour Nordend, Westend attracts many families whose primary breadwinners work in the financial centre and wish to be close to work.
Westend is situated to the west of Frankfurt’s city centre and is known for its upscale residential character. It is considered one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in the city. Home to Grünebergpark and the Botanical Gardens, the neighbourhood offers plenty for getting the kids out into the streets, with beautiful buildings adding to its appeal. When looking for flats, this area will reflect Westend prices. If you’re looking for a steal, then this is not your area. But if you are looking for beautifully tree-lined streets, a quiet neighbourhood and several very nice cafes, then this area is for you. Of course, all this does come at a price, and rent is very much on the high end, with parking also proving difficult at times. Chinaski Tagesbar has long been one of our…

The Taunus
The Taunus is a picturesque region located just outside of Frankfurt, Germany, characterised by its natural beauty, charming towns, and recreational opportunities. It is also what some might consider to be ‘the burbs’…popular areas include (but are not limited to) Kronberg, Bad Soden & Oberursel Oberursel attracts families with children attending FIS (Frankfurt International School). Of course, work location needs to be taken into account, too, when choosing a place to live. Oberursel also serves as a gateway for hikers and mountain bikers due to its proximity to many mountain trails. If hiking isn’t your preference, Oberursel’s Altstadt is charming and offers a less strenuous activity. The town is accessible by both U-bahn and S-bahn. Kronberg is known to be one of the more expensive areas to live outside of Frankfurt. However, it offers good amenities and an S-Bahn (s4) connection to the city. Additionally, Opel Zoo is located just on the outskirts. Bad Soden is a spa town on Frankfurt’s outskirts and a very popular area for families.

Sachsenhausen
Sachsenhausen lies just south of the river and has plenty of charm, a culture melting pot and thus, for good reason is one of the most populated neighbourhoods in Frankfurt. First, art lovers are drawn to the magnificent museums along Museumsufer. Second, those with a penchant for coffee frequent the quaint cafes, immersing themselves in the cafe culture. Finally, social individuals gravitate toward the numerous relaxed bars and restaurants scattered along the river and in the heart of Sachsenhausen itself. Sachsenhausen is also home to some of the famous Apfelwein taverns lining the Rittegasse pedestrian area. Schweizerstraße, renowned for its cobblestone streets, is the main thoroughfare and offers excellent shopping opportunities. However, if you seek well-known high-street brands, Zeil is your go-to destination! Attracting a younger demographic, apartments in Sachsenhausen can be rented at relatively affordable prices, with some boasting glorious views of the river. Good to know:

Ostend
Ostend lies to the east of the city and has an industrial feel to it. Think meatpacking district in New York or East London….that’s got you thinking. It’s another very up-and-coming area with plenty going for it; it does, however, still have a way to go, but soon it will be another major hotspot. Along the river towards Osthafen, you can find artist studios, furniture shops, Oostend Cafe and Bar and a fantastic area around the ECB. Along the east part of the river, you will discover loads of festivals during the summer, and it is home to parties like LAZY and Die Kleinste Disko Der Welt. It’s the perfect place to bring visitors or take a stroll with the family. Hafenpark is another excellent spot for the whole family. It’s great for running, a weekend BBQ or taking a stroll through the lovely gardens there.

Nordend
Nordend is very centrally located and still has an air of bohemian flavour to it thanks to it being the melting pot in 1970’s for many liberal and free thinking minds to come together to share and inspire. Today it is popular with young professionals and families thanks to its good transport links, schools and social scene. Between Friedberger Landstrasse and Oederweg, one can find many bars, restaurants and cafes that are well worth exploring. Also, be on the lookout for The Holzhausenpark (including Holzhausen Castle), which hosts many concerts and exhibitions. On the downside, if you drive, parking is an absolute nightmare! If circling your apartment each evening for hours before finding suitable (or not-so-suitable) parking doesn’t sound like fun, then be sure to check when looking to rent a property whether it comes with parking or has the opportunity to rent one. Because Nordend is a very popular area, rent can be on the higher side. If you find a flat you love, grab it then and there, as available flats don’t last long.

Innenstadt
Innenstadt is the central district of Frankfurt, and its the financial heartbeat of the city. The towering buildings in this part of the city have created the iconic skyline which has earned it the nickname 'Mainhattan'. Home to some of Germany’s most exclusive shopping and real estate, be prepared to either have your wallet at the ready or push it as deep down inside your pocket as humanly possible (and hope that your partner and children don’t find it). Innenstadt is home to cultural landmarks such as the historic Alte Oper and modern-day skyscrapers like the Main Tower and the Deutsche Bank Towers. Furthermore, museums, galleries, and theatres add to the district’s cultural richness.

Europaviertel
Europaviertel is one of Frankfurts newest suburbs and an absolute hub of development! Plenty of high rise apartment blocks make up the skyline and the streets are wider than other neighbourhoods in the city. 10 minute drive sees you into the city centre and slightly less to the main train station Hauptbahnhof. With it being a newer area it doesn’t have the charm of Westend and Nordend but parking is far less of issue and its quicker getting out into the countryside. Also, Rebstock Park & Rebstockbad are within walking distance along with a few smaller play areas and skateboard courses which provide plenty of entertainment for the kids! On the downside there are plenty of building works with them currently building the latest Ubahn next to Skyline Plaza. Skyline Plaza is a mall in the area which provides a great alternative to having to head into the city for shopping with plenty of high street options. Meridian Spa is on the 3rd floor and is a truly exceptional gym with all the toys one could hope to have. Another plus is that they have free childcare Meridini for members when you workout (of course certain opening hours apply and its only available to you while you workout) Meridian Spa

Bornheim
Bornheim lies North East of the centre and is another highly populated area in Frankfurt. Popular with young professionals due to its close proximity to the city centre, but also a popular choice with those with for families. Its many parks and the zoo close by makes this area heaven for kids. As a result of Bornheim playing host to the city’s Red Light District over a century ago the area was given the nickname Das lustige Dorf (“The merry\funny village”). The area still retains its lively and happening energy with Berger Straße being the backbone of much of the activity. Berger Straße is also the longest shopping street in Frankfurt bringing all kinds of bars, restaurants, wine shops, boutiques and flowers shops together. It’s the perfect area to explore on a sunny day. While in Bornheim make sure to check out Günthersburg Park, the Zoo, Berger Street Food, Sandbar, Old Fritz, Naxos Studios and Cafe Süden. You will find a variety of flats in the area. Because it’s a very popular area and quite central to many things in the city be sure to grab a flat when you see one. They don’t become available that often.

Bockenheim
Bockenheim is perhaps a little more low key than the likes of Bornheim and Nordend but still with plenty of hip bohemian flavour! Situated to the northwest of Frankfurt's city centre, much of the activity happens along Leipziger Straße, this main street. There you’ll find plenty of coffee shops, restaurants, bars and shopping! Bockenheimer Warte, a medieval watchtower, is one of the well-known landmarks, along with the U-Bahn entrance made to resemble a subway car bursting through from the earth below (pretty cool, we say)! Traditionally, the area was central to student life. However, much of the University has since shifted eastward towards Westend. Affordable ‘student housing’, however, has remained a major draw card for Bockenheim and thus attracts a diverse range of residents! If you are moving to Frankfurt and need a nice…

Bahnhofsviertel
Bahnhofsviertel, some might say, is in the middle of a ‘revolution’! Once infamous for its red-light district, it now hosts some of the trendiest bars and restaurants in Frankfurt. With its diverse clientele, it stands out as one of our favourite areas in the city to visit and experience the vibrant nightlife. Although the city of Frankfurt has taken significant steps to revitalise the main station area (Hauptbahnhof), certain streets still serve as a hub for drug use and prostitution. If you happen upon any ‘extracurricular activity,’ there’s no need to be alarmed. However, if you prefer a less exhilarating environment but still want to explore the area, Kaiserstraße is a relatively safe choice!

Altstadt
Altstadt, or 'old town' in English, is completely surrounded by the Innenstadt district (present-day city centre) and lies just to the north of the river. The Altstadt has existed since Frankfurt's beginnings. However, only a handful of the original buildings survived the bombings during WWII, with many having to be rebuilt years later Despite this, Altstadt has retained plenty of medieval charm and is an absolute delight to visit. It contains many of Frankfurt’s important sites, the Römerberg plaza (a definite must-see) along with Römer city hall and Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom St Bartholomaus). The iconic Römerberg square is a perfect representation of the half-timbered houses once so loved by a bygone era! As previously mentioned, most of the original timber frame houses were destroyed in the war. Thus, for a chance to see the only one still remaining in the square, head down towards the river. Directly opposite the steps leading to the Historisches Museum you will find that it is not only still standing but fully functional, housing both a bakery and restaurant. Compare it to the buildings on the rest of the square, and it certainly proves what a wonderful job the city has done rebuilding this historic part of the city! Take a seat at one of Frankfurt’s coffee institutions, Wackers, and people watch as tourists amble across the square or perhaps head around the corner to the Schirn and take in an exhibition. Whatever your pleasure, though, there’s bound to be a little something for everyone.

Papanova
Finding a restaurant where both parents and kids feel relaxed can be a somewhat daunting task at times! Papanova definitely fits the bill! Eclectic decor, great atmosphere, friendly staff, pizza and steak cooked at lightning speed (to perfection I might add) accompanied by a glass of vino, we have a very definite Saturday night family haunt! Madame Mei
In the Innerstadt, a stone’s throw away from Goetheplatz lies Madame Mei, where they serve Cantonese food at its best. The name Madame Mei conjures up images of a bygone era of prohibition & mystery! My imagination continues to be indulged as we pull back a heavy set of red curtains to enter a ‘little space in Shanghai’; as we walk in, glorious aromas assault my senses, and I am instantly starving! The decor is tastefully done, adding to the feel and ambience of the restaurant; whilst we were here only for lunch, we followed this up with a variety of dim sum, which were fresh and flavour-filled; I can imagine this being wonderful for an intimate dinner! Starting with Wanton soup was the perfect way to warm up after coming in from the cold, we followed this up with a variety of dim sum which were fresh and flavour filled, the spices coming through beautifully in each mouthful! We washed it all down with a cup of their Oolong tea….yum (and as an added bonus our waiter happily topped up our tea cups for round 2) Address: Hours: Additional Info: website | instagram Price Guide: €€

Naiv
Known mainly for their craft beer with around 50 varieties from around the world and 3 inhouse brews, it’s hard to imagine there not being a beer to satisfy most palettes! Living however in an inclusive society ???? they do not discriminate and serve up a mean cocktail and have a more than adequate wine list! The bar is a large wooden wood slab which runs much of the room with bar stools (and love seats for 2) along side, exposed brick walls also bring a warmth to the space allowing you to fully sit back and enjoy your beer (or drink of choice) and moreish nosh! There is an impressive list of tastings to choose from, think beer & cheese (here we thought cheese only went with wine ????), beer & whiskey, gin, rum & beer the list goes on and on and left our heads reeling at the sheer number of choices available to taste… Not to be outdone by the impressive variety of beer ‘on tap’, the restaurant serves up a mean dish in a relaxed environment!
